Reading – Our reading books for this week are below. I will be assessing all of the reading groups over the next 2 weeks to determine if they are ready to move on to the next level of the scheme.

Book Bandits – The Mermaids Visit the Vet

Page Pirates – This is my Pet

Word Wizards – King Pip and the Dark Wood

Sound Stars – In the Pit

Phonics – our sound for this week is ou (as in sound). I have attached the words the children could work on along with some challenge words and the grid for them to use. You might like to also encourage your child to think of other words containing this phoneme. Sound stars words are below and they should try to use the active sp

elling homework grid to choose tasks to complete.

Active Spelling Homework

Numeracy – Our class are working through a few different concepts of number this week. For homework I would like the class to focus on  building their knowledge of addition and subtraction facts using Hit the Button. They should use the number bonds section of this game. You will notice there are many different levels within this section so it would be good if you could provide your child with some guidance about which levels they should tackle and encourage them to challenge themselves where appropriate.

As always, any questions or issues please let me know and I will do my best to help.

Scottish day

On Friday our whole school will take part in a Scottish themed assembly via Teams where the poetry winners from each class will recite their poems. We will also be watching recordings of each stage performing a Scottish song. It is hoped that these will be shared with you following on from this assembly but this is yet to be confirmed.

The whole school is invited to wear something tartan on Friday to join in with our theme. This may be something like a dress, a t-shirt, a hat, a scarf, whatever you like, however Mrs McKee has asked that there be no football strips.

Hexagol

Our class was treated to a visit from the Hexagol from Kilmarnock Football Club today. The class had a brilliant time playing the games that the leaders put on for them in there. It was clear from the happy faces that everyone had fun. Here are some pictures of the class’ time in the Hexagol.

Homework wb 24 January

Reading – this week the class will read different books in class to those they are assigned for homework. This means that the books I assign for home this week will be less familiar to the children than they may have been on other weeks.

Book Bandits – My Shoes

Page Pirates – This Dinosaur

Word Wizards – Beep Beep Timmy

Sound Stars – Top Cat

Phonics – our sound for this week is ow (as in now). As the class have previously learned this phoneme as a different sound (snow) this may cause a little confusion for some of the children. I have attached the words the children could work on along with some challenge words and the grid for them to use.

Numeracy – our class is continuing to work on data handling this week. We had great fun last week completing a transport survey. Additionally the class are working on increasing their recall of numeracy facts in addition and subtraction which will aid their progression in this area.

This game would support the class with this process. There are three levels and everyone in our class will be able to have a go at them. https://www.topmarks.co.uk/addition/robot-addition

This game would also support the class https://www.topmarks.co.uk/Flash.aspx?f=PostSortingcalculationsv2

Any remaining entries to the JRSO competition are to be with me by Friday.

Food

Over the next couple of weeks we will be making and tasting food. This will include broth soup, shortbread, oatcakes, diet irn-bru, cheese and haggis. I have put a little note in your homework diary. Can you please indicate if you are happy for your child to take part and leave a comment if there are any issues? Thank you, Mrs Smith

Homework week beginning 17 January 2022

Good afternoon everyone, I hope you all enjoyed at least some of the weekend.

A couple of reminders for our class. If your child has any achievements outside of school that they would like to share please allow them to do this. Mrs McKee loves to get pictures of the children with medals or certificates which she includes in our weekly assemblies and the children really love seeing themselves on our big screen. Also, due to the covid regulations, windows and doors have to be left open as much as possible to ventilate the classrooms resulting in us occasionally being a little colder than we might like so jumpers are a good idea for school.

Gym days continue to be a Tuesday and Friday. Most of the class keep their shorts and gym shoes in class. Could I please ask those that don’t keep their things in school to ensure they come to school with them on these days.

Our homework for this week is slightly different to allow the children time to practise their Scots poems at home in time for next Mondays competition in class. Additionally we have today been given a competition to complete to design a high viz vest. All of the children who wish to take part in this have a sheet in their bag which is to come back to school be Friday 28th January.

Reading homework for this week is as follows:

Book Bandits – A little look at big reptiles

Page Pirates – Zip and Zap meet the Sam

Word Wizards – Be a pirate

Sound Stars – Is Nan In?

Phonics – this week we are learning the sound ew. I have attached the spelling activity grid as a word document and some words the children can use as both a picture and a word document. Please ask your child to complete at least 3 activities from the grid. Nothing needs to be brought in to school to show that the children have done their homework. It allows them the opportunity to consolidate their learning at home and to show you what they have been learning.

Numeracy – this week the class will be doing some data handling. We will be completing some surveys in class and a traffic survey out in the garden. As I mentioned last week, we will be looking at the places in Scotland that we have visited and to that end it would be really helpful if you could sit down with your child and talk about the names of places you have visited. We have a big map that we will be marking our places on to and will then collate and display the data we generate in a way that the children choose.

As always please get in contact with any issues, concerns or even with happy stories.

Scots Poetry

Today we have started to learn our Scots poem for the upcoming poetry competition. We are learning Elephant by J.K. Annand. The children all seemed to enjoy trying their poem together today. Everyone has a paper copy of the poem in their bag. This can be kept at home for them to practise. The competition will take place in our class on Monday 24th January where a winner will be chosen. Each child will have the opportunity to take part but while I would like them all to take part, no one will need to take part who does not want to.

I am looking forward to the class making my decision very difficult!

Happy New Year!!

Hello everyone and Happy New Year to you and your families!

It is so nice to see everyone back at school safely. We have had great fun sharing stories of our holidays with each other.  We have welcomed a new member to our class and we are having great fun getting to know them.

On behalf of Mrs Smith, Mrs O’Callaghan and myself I would like to thank everyone who gave us Christmas cards and gifts. We were very touched by the thought behind these, they really are appreciated.

It is very much back to normal for our class this week and with that brings our homework.

Reading homework for this week is as follows:

Book Bandits – Jay and Sniffer: The cake sale goo

Page Pirates – Shaun the Sheep: What a mess

Word Wizards – Rat and Cat: The dance

Sound Stars – Dig and Tip

Phonics – this week we are learning the sound au. I have attached the spelling activity grid as a word document and some words the children can use as both a picture and a word document. Please ask your child to complete at least 3 activities from the grid. This same grid will be used for the next three weeks.

Numeracy – this week we are revising the concept of partitioning numbers. This allows us to have a good knowledge of the value of numbers and the importance of the place value of each digit. The following game will support this concept. There are 5 levels of this game. I would hope that all children can try the first two levels with those requiring more of a challenge working their way through the other levels too.

Our class topic for the month of January will be Scotland. We have already learned about cities in Scotland and will be continuing to learn about Scots language, Scottish agriculture and Scottish foods. It may be helpful if you could talk to your child about places in Scotland that they have visited as I hope we can discuss these in class to find places lots of us have been and some that only some of us have been to or none at all.

As always if anyone has any questions, concerns or comments please contact me either at the door at hometime or via the school office.
