Sharing Information: Classroom Visits

Dear Parent / Carer,

Sharing Information: Classroom Visits

The children have now settled in their new classes and we would like to offer you the opportunity to visit your child’s classroom and meet their teacher(s) in the school hall.

Primary 1 Parents

You are invited to an information session on Monday 17 September from 1.15pm until 1.45pm to meet the teachers and receive information about your child’s learning in P1. If you have a child/ren in another area of the school you will be able to go to their class at 2.00 pm.

Primary 2 – Primary 7 Parents

I am sure you will find this a worthwhile experience which will provide you with information on the learning through displays. It will also give you an opportunity to meet your child’s teacher(s).

There will be the formal parents’ meetings on Tuesday 9 October 2018 when you will have an individual meeting with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress and areas for development.

The open afternoon for P2 to P7 classes will take place on Monday 17 September from 2.00 pm. Please come to the school reception and you will be escorted to the relevant area of the school.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs A Wright, Mrs G Findlay and Mr D McIlwraith

P5E scavenger hunt

Primary 5 are exploring the features of non-fiction texts this term.

P5E were showing that they could identify these features during a fun scavenger hunt.  They were to choose a non-fiction book and stick a post it note next to the feature they found.  Some groups were very quick demonstrating excellent knowledge of non-fiction text features.

P3 Pupils have a ‘Growth Mindset’

Our P3 pupils have had a visit from ‘Try’atops the Growth Mindset dinosaur.

Tryatops has been encouraging the pupils to develop a positive attitude towards learning and to understand that making mistakes is part of the learning process.

Pupils are learning the importance of the word ‘YET’. Instead of saying “I can’t do it” we should say “I can’t do it YET”.

We want all pupils to feel comfortable and happy in their learning environment.

Over the next few weeks during our Health and Wellbeing lessons we will be facing some challenges and showing how determined we are to succeed.

P3W pupils chose a motivational phrase to write on the classroom pencils.

Onthank is ‘Officially Amazing’

CONGRATULATIONS

As we approach the end of term we would like to say well done to all our pupils. We reflect on all their achievements and look forward to when we can view everybody’s  strengths and achievements through their Glow e-portfolio.

We all believe that Onthank pupils are …

,

***We received a phone call this afternoon from an East Ayrshire employee to give us some very positive news. His parents were in Millport on Monday while our P7s were there and he told us the shopkeepers were praising Onthank pupils and staff. He said “The toy shop owners were saying Onthank pupils were the best school who had visited them this year”. Polite, mannerly and pleasant children.”?He said this was the same story in other places. “Kids and teachers from Onthank were a credit to the school”.

Well done P7s. I hope you all enjoyed your pizza today”.?

World of Work

We have all been enjoying learning about ‘Our World of Work’.

We have shared ideas of careers which we think we might enjoy in the future and we have been considering what steps we would need to take to be able to do certain jobs.

Importantly, we have been discussing the strengths and talents we have already and how we can continue to develop these.

We have had lots of fun playing games, participating in roleplay and some of us have even tried to fill in application forms for our dream jobs.

P6K worked with Miss Smith to create a ‘World of Work’ Assembly. Through drama, music and dance they demonstrated that if you are determined and work hard you can achieve your dreams.

The whole school enjoyed the assembly on Monday and today we welcomed parents and relatives to watch.

Well done P6K!

P5E World Cup Countries Research

This term Primary 5E have been using their ICT skills to research information on countries participating in the World Cup.

They had to find out lots of facts, locate their country on a world map and accurately copy down the country’s flag.

Then pupils were asked to create a bigger design of their flag using paint.

Miss Ellis was so impressed with their fantastic art work that she asked pupils if the flags could be used on the Girl Guiding float that was entering the Stewarton Bonnet Guild gala day parade last weekend.  This meant hundreds of people got to see their excellent work.

All the Stewarton Brownie and Guide leaders would like to thank P5E for allowing us to use their flags.

I’d like to thank all those who came along each week – you worked hard and have improved loads since the first week and I hope you continue to try your hand at some of the techniques I have taught you.

Over the weeks we have mastered watercolours, oils, pencils as well as the use of gesso as an undercoat.  Keep painting.

P6 John Muir Award Celebration

P6 had a great turnout for Onthank’s first ever John Muir Award Celebration this afternoon. Our P6s have been learning that John Muir was a Scottish born conservationalist, who lived in the late 1800s and later moved to America to found of some of their National Parks.

The award encourages children to explore natural areas near the school and over time develop and conserve them. You may have noticed that trees have been planted at the front of the school and a wide selection of vegetables have been planted near the nursery.

Congratulations to our P6 pupils, you have worked extremely hard! Thanks to all who came along to help us celebrate. We hope you had a good time and learned something new!

Please contact the office if you would be able to help us water and care for the plants over the summer holidays.

Letter for Parents and Carers

Dear Parent/ Carer,

The Parent Council and school would like to write a joint letter to you about the incident reported in the Kilmarnock Standard this week which happened in April last term.

Parent Council

The Parent Council has reviewed the incident with EAC and agree with the conclusions that the school acted promptly to locate and retrieve the children concerned. We know and are concerned that this can happen in any school.  However, we are confident that we will all learn from this unfortunate incident to ensure that we limit the possibility of a re occurrence happening again.
School

As a school we have worked with both families to reassure them of how seriously we viewed the matter and feel it is important to protect the anonymity of the children.  As the incident has been reported in the press it is important that you know the relevant information has been given to parents concerned.  At our last Parent Council meeting we reported this Health and Safety incident occurring during a lunchtime and described the actions that have been taken by the local authority and school working together.  We have consulted with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Health and Safety team. Already there have been improvements to gates and a new gate has been purchased.   As you are probably aware staff have been monitoring the gates until the new one is fitted.  As a school we have ensured our pupil Health and Safety team have been working with adults and the steps they have introduced include safety circles and safety lines.  Staff speak to the children regularly about the importance of staying within the school grounds for their own safety and about road safety near to the school.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Parent Council and the wider school community for their support and for the work you all do at home to reinforce this important message.  The school and Parent Council continue to work in partnership and have a meeting planned for next week.

If you have any concerns we can discuss them at our weekly Wednesday morning drop in.  I would also like to invite all of our parents and carers to attend a safety talk at the school on Wednesday 30th May.  We had already scheduled an Online Safety Workshop from 3.15pm to 4.15pm and I can answer any questions you may have about security within the school and our playgrounds at this event.

Yours sincerely,

Scott Thomson (Chair of Parent Council)

Alison Wright (Head teacher)
