World of Work Week – Farming Visits

Our final day of World of Work week was extremely exciting as we welcomed local farmers into our school playground!

A huge thank you to Emma and Stevie Guild, Elaine and Allan Young, and John Murray for a fantastic day enjoyed by all pupils and staff.  We are so grateful to learn about the career opportunities in farming and agriculture, as well as how farming hugely benefits our community here in New Cumnock.

Take a look at our video to see our amazing day!

World of Work Week – Author Visits

Before the holidays, all our children enjoyed learning about the world of work through a variety of visitors.

On Wednesday 30th March, we were visited virtually by 2 authors; Shirley Husband and Lindsay Littleson!

Shirley Husband is a local author who is known for her Harris McCoo books.  Shirley and her illustrator Maurice Hynds created the Harris McCoo series of books based on art works by Steven Brown Art.

Shirley spoke about her career as a children’s author and her process for writing picture books.  She answered lots of questions from our P1-3 children, and spoke about her journey into writing with our P4-7 classes.

Lindsay Littleson is an award winning Scottish author who writes middle grade fiction novels.  Our P5 class were even studying one of her books last term… “The Secrets of the Last Merfolk”.

Lindsay did a long Q and A session with our P4-7 classes answering a variety of questions from pupils about her inspiration for writing, how she became a writer and her favourite books.

Thank you so much to both these talented authors for inspiring our children!

Easter Service at New Cumnock Parish Church

All our families are warmly invited to bring your child/children for a Blessing on Easter Sunday Morning at 11am in New Cumnock Parish Church.

Children can be accompanied by their parents/carers/adult family member.  If they would like to, they can be brought forward during the short service of celebration for a blessing.

Easter pictures drawn by children at the school will be on display and prizes will be handed out to children who are there. In addition books telling the Easter story will be available.

The service is designed for all ages and will last about 35 minutes.

We hope you can manage to come along on this very special day.

World of Work Week Day 2

Primary 6 have been enjoying learning about careers in law and the justice system.  This was linked to their learning about Article 40 of the UNCRC that says:

A child accused or guilty of breaking the law must be treated with dignity and respect.  They have the right to legal assistance and a fair trial that takes account of their age.  Governments must set a minimum age for children to be tried in a criminal court and manage a justice system that enables children who have been in conflict with the law to reintegrate into society.

They hosted a mock trial, looked at the different parts of the court and the roles involved in a trial!

Primary 2 extended their learning from their virtual Windfarm visit with Vattenfall and RJ McLeod by making pin wheel windmills!

They were so interested in how windmills worked and their creations are absolutely fantastic!

Primary 7 used the Skills Development Scotland website to investigate which careers best suited their personalities.  They answered THIS OR THAT questions which then generated a series of jobs that suited their answers.

World of Work Week Day 1

VATTENFALL WINDFARM AND R J MCLEOD

Today we were so excited to welcome representatives from Vattenfall Windfarms and RJ McLeod who took time out of their day at South Kyle Windfarm to dial in to talk to our pupils about STEM careers and local opportunities.

Carol Kane from Vattenfall spoke to pupils about what the windfarm does and why it is an important part of our community.  We listened carefully to her presentation which included information about  sustainability and renewables, as well as different career roles available at the windfarm.

Ian Sloan, one of the Project Managers, spoke to pupils about his own time at New Cumnock Primary School (the former Castle Building).  He told pupils about his job on the windfarm and the subjects he enjoyed at school.

Finally, Rosie Gillan from RJ McLeod spoke about opportunities for girls in STEM careers.  She encouraged our girls to take part in science and maths at school, and talked about her job at the windfarm.

We are so excited to take up their offer of a visit to the windfarm in the near future to get real hands on experience at the site!

Thank you to all involved including Tamara Campbell and Christina McKitrick who were integral in setting up this opportunity for our pupils!

Scotland Supports Ukraine Refugees

Scotland is well known for supporting people in need of refuge and safety.

Article 38 of the United Nations Convention for the Rights of the Child says that “governments around the world must do everything they can to protect and care for children affected by war and armed conflicts.”

This Friday (25/3/22), we are asking all children to come to school dressed in the colours of the Ukrainian flag- YELLOW and BLUE.

We are asking all those who are able, to pay a £1  donation via ParentPay for the Ukrainian Refugee Appeal.

Let’s raise as much money as possible and show our support for Ukrainian refugees.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone in their YELLOW and BLUE outfits!
