Home Learning Assembly

Good morning boys and girls and welcome back to our next Home Learning Assembly.

We hope you had a lovely long weekend and were able to enjoy some time in the sunshine.

We are now in the month of May when we honour Mary, Mother of God. St Teresa of Calcutta once said, “if you are ever upset call upon our Lady”

Let’s start this week’s assembly with this simple prayer.

Mary, Mother of Jesus please be a mother to us now and look after everyone we love.  Help us to live like Jesus and have faith in his love.

Amen

We know it is difficult being away from family and friends and we are all missing you too. We hope you are enjoying the tasks and activities and we enjoy seeing and hearing what you have been up to. The most important thing is that you and your family are happy and healthy, so do what you can when you can. Remember we are always here if you want to contact us.

Last Thursday was Mr McMillan’s last day as our janitor.  It was a sad day for all of us but he will be able to spend much more time with his family soon. He was telling us he is going to teach his 5 grandchildren to swim. A lot of the staff from our school met in the car park to clap for Mr McMillan as he has been our hero for many years.  He was very surprised to see us. When we get back to school we will have a very special celebration for him.

Congratulations to all our Primary 7s who have received their Pope Francis Faith Award.  Special congratulations go to Alfie, Tosia, Abbey, Sarah and Olivia Smith.  They received a Parish Commendation from Fr. Martin for their positive contributions to the life of the Parish.   Well done everyone. We will arrange for you to receive your certificates when we have them.

One thing we are doing a lot of is washing our hands and using a lot of soap and water.

We have a special challenge for you this week. All across the country this is National Water Week. We would like you to design something that either reduces water wastage or collects water.  I know this is something that our Eco Committee knows all about. You can draw a picture or make a model and take a picture. Send your pictures to your class teacher.  We will display some of the most ingenious at a later assembly.

This unusual time has given us the opportunity to think about all the people around us and how much they do for us. We are all very proud of all the boys and girls in Mount Carmel and over coming weeks the staff will share what makes them proud.

This week Mrs Travers and Mrs Crawford share their Proud Cloud.

We finish our assembly today by thanking God for our families, our NHS and key workers.

Continue to stay safe boys and girls. Show love to the people around you, we love and miss you all.

Home Learning Assembly Friday 1st May

Hello boys and girls and welcome to our first Home Learning Assembly.

We hope that you are all doing well and we all miss you so much.
This is a bit of a different assembly, we are not all together in the hall but we thought it would be nice if we could still all come together in a special way each week.
Just the way that we would normally do, let’s start of with a prayer together, let’s take a moment to speak to God and to thank him for all that He is doing for us.
Please God continue to look after us all and keep us safe.
Lord in your mercy,
Hear our Prayer.
This week we would like to thank  you all for the great work that is being completed at home.  Mrs McGahon and Mrs Fergusson have been speaking to many parents at home to see how you are all doing.  They have been telling us great things about the work you have been completing.  Many of you have been sending in photographs of what you have been doing at home, you class teachers have really  enjoyed looking at all of these things.  Well done and keep up the hard work.
We have also had lots of great things sent for the lovely Mr McMillan.  As you were told last week Mr McMillan will soon be retiring, Mrs Templeton has been collecting all of  you poems, stories and pictures to make a lovely book for Mr McMillan to show how much we are going to miss him.  Thank you all so much for working on these things, don’t worry if you haven’t had time to send in something you can still make a picture.  Once we are all back together we will do something special for him and you can pass any of your lovely things to him then.

We have a new request for you for this week.  Bishop Nolan has asked for lovely pictures of our priests to be sent to him, these will be used to fill the seats of the Cathedral in Ayr during this time when we cannot fill them with people.  This can be sent by an adult through facebook or you can send to Mrs McGahon at Joanna.mcgahon@eastayrshire.org.uk We will then pass these pictures on for you.

As we always do during our assembly it is now time for our Star Pupils.  We are sending virtual certificates out this week to:

Primary 1 – Mrs Duff “I am going to nominate Jessica as she has tried so hard in all of her tasks and really used her imagination. She chose to make our class Olaf a sun house from her 3D junk modelling challenge !! So proud of her.”
Primary 2 – Mrs Dunsmore “My pupil of the week is Casper. He has worked extremely hard during  the home learning period. He has been completing all tasks that have been set to a very high standard. I am very proud of Casper.”
Primary 3 – Mrs McCreadie “My pupil of the week is Taylor.  He has been a superstar completing all his jobs and sending pictures of things he has been doing with Mum.  He also ran the 5K to raise money for NHS.
Primary 4 – Mrs Strachan ” My pupil is Harry, he has been amazing completing the Home Learning Tasks.  He also made a clips video too!”
Primary 5 – Mrs McIntyre “My star pupil is Tilly for completing all jobs and sending it everyday and including pictures of her creativity and dress design.”
Primary 6 – Mrs Mackinnon ” I would like to recognise Aimee from P6 for her consistent effort and fabulous research on Famous French People.”
Primary 7 – Miss Mudge “I nominate Olivia S. She’s been completing all the core tasks. She’s also been great at getting in contact with some of the other P7’snd she has helped others with some tasks. – Well done Olivia”
Let’s finish our assembly today by thanking God for all of our Key Workers who have been doing so much to keep us all safe.  If you have time take a look at our Wellbeing Blog which this week has so many of our amazing carers.

Continue to stay safe boys and girls. Show love to the people around you, we love and miss you all.

A message from our Head Teacher

Dear Parent/Carer,

In this strange situation we find ourselves in it’s hard to think today would have been the last day of term. Over the last few weeks we have become accustomed to what has become the new normal. We don’t know how long this situation will continue for but must remember this will pass and the joy and laughter will return to our school family.

I would like to take the opportunity to thank my whole school team for the effort and enthusiasm in everything they do for our children and families. Also, I know my team and I would like to thank you for your continued support.

I wish you a happy and peaceful Easter and hope we will all be able to be together soon.

A message from our Head Teacher

Dear Parents/Carers

As we come to the end of the first week of this difficult situation the team at Mount Carmel would like to thank you for your understanding and support. We would also like to thank the many key workers from our school community who are caring for and supporting East Ayrshire.

It’s difficult to comprehend how much has changed over so short a time.

From Monday 30th March our Home Learning Zone will contain activities posted on each class blog.

There will be three core activities and a selection of additional tasks. The Home Learning Zone will be updated regularly. I anticipate there will be a few teething problems but we will work through them just as we have with glow access this week.

It’s important that children and families feel supported and not isolated. You can contact us anytime using our online form and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We are happy to hear any suggestions you have or ideas you want to share. We are also here if you want to just have a chat. We will continue to post ideas and suggestions in our Health and Wellbeing area. It’s important we all look after ourselves and each other.

I don’t underestimate the impact this pandemic is having and will continue to have on us all for the foreseeable future but as the school family of Mount Carmel we will get through this.

Mrs McConville

Head Teacher

Future Home Learning Provision

Soon we will add pupil activities to be completed by each class. This will be in the form of 3 areas:

Literacy

Numeracy

IDL

These tasks will be posted to each class blog.  Each area will contain 3 core tasks which all pupils should aim to complete. There will also be a selection of additional tasks which can be completed if you wish.  We are committed to doing all that we can to support our pupils and families. Together we are all Team MC.

If you require further support or guidance please complete the contact us form.

Class teachers are in the process of emailing all pupils through GLOW please ask your child to respond to this. They may need your help.

This week please continue to work on these tasks as suggested in our main Home Learning Zone.

Week Beginning Monday 23rd March. Below is a set of 25 suggested activities that can be completed by most primary age children.  There is no expectation that your child should complete all of these tasks, please use your own judgement and complete as many or as few as you wish.

Ideas for week beginning Monday 23rd March

Also remember to include some exercise in your daily routine, this an excellent resource and one that your child has used previously in school.

Emergency Childcare Provision from Tuesday 24th March

Schools and early childhood centres – latest update from EAC

We would like to thank all parents/carers and staff for heeding our advice and helping us to make sure that we could provide childcare for our most critical key workers today.

It has been enormously helpful that everyone has respected our advice to use our schools as a last resort. Now that we know the number of young people who are continuing to attend our schools and early childhood centres (ECC), we are in a position to revise this further and re-organise according to most needed areas. As a result tomorrow, Tuesday 24 March we will move to a ‘hub’ provision.

Register for our hubs

To use our hub, please fill in our e-form so that we have your details logged in advance of your child’s arrival. Remember we need to reduce social contact, and even if you are a key worker, please only  send your child as a last resort and if you absolutely need to.

No child will be turned away on the first day of this revised provision, providing they have been registered.

One of our colleagues will contact you if you do not qualify for a keyworker place.

The hub provision for Mount Carmel Primary School is now James Hamilton Primary Hub.

Supporting your child’s wellbeing

The Coronavirus outbreak has led to a high degree of worry, uncertainty and concern for both children and adults.  Our children are very aware of what is taking place and it may cause them to feel anxious and unsure about their safety.

It is important to encourage children to talk their feelings within a safe context, at the same time as maintaining a sense of normality, routine and calm. Supporting children will enable them to process and manage their feelings and help build resilience.

You may find these suggestions helpful:
– Reassure children and young people that they are safe: Children benefit from regular reassurance that they are safe, and being reminded that adults will do what they can to keep them safe.
– Let children know that it is alright to be upset, all feelings are okay.
– Create a routine include some work, play and exercise in this.
– Emphasise their resilience and strengths: Focus on the strengths of our children and young people, in terms of their daily life. Help them to see and acknowledge that they have many strengths to help them cope if they are feeling anxious or upset.
– Look for opportunities to help others: Acts of kindness, charity and humanity help to restore positivity and has huge benefits for our own well-being.
