GMWP

At the start of this school year, all children at Mount Carmel completed the Glasgow Motivation and Wellbeing Profile (GMWP) to enable monitoring and tracking of wellbeing across all stages.

The Wellbeing Profile is a 20-item questionnaire that explores motivation and sense of wellbeing in the learning context. This initial profile allows us to have meaningful dialogue in relation to wellbeing and identify next steps and/or if additional support is needed. Questions within the profile are based upon 4 key themes; Agency (skills and success), Affiliation (sense of belonging), Autonomy (embracing responsibilities), and Healthy and Safe.

Class teachers will be sharing the data from the questionnaires with pupils and individual/class targets will be set to ensure progress is made.

This intervention is a positive step towards better supporting your child’s overall wellbeing.

We thank you for your continued support.

Clean Green Awards

We are so proud of the hard work of our wonderful pupils at Mount Carmel for all of their efforts towards making our school more eco friendly. Our Eco Committee have helped to drive forward changes within our school to gain our ‘Highly Commended Bronze Award’ through the Clean Green initiative as well as our green eco flag. This is only our first year in our eco journey so we are immensely proud of these achievements.

A special mention to Hannah and Sophia (P7), who introduced many eco strategies across the school and  monitored their impact. Also, Mrs McGahon, our Eco Champion who has led our Eco Committee and supported our children throughout the year.

Hannah and Sophia attended the Clean Green Awards to collect our award and flag. They had a fantastic day networking with other schools. They enjoyed listening to all the eco friendly changes other schools have made.

Primary 1 will focus on developing their word attack strategies as they develop their reading and writing skills. As Primary 1 begin to access worded texts, they will also begin to develop their prediction skills. They will look closely at their new reading books each week and make simple predictions (orally) about what they think their book will be about. This will help to deepen their understanding of each text as well as begin to develop their comprehension skills. In addition to this, Primary 1 will develop their sequencing and visualisation skills. They will listen to a range of traditional stories including Goldilocks and the Three Bears and they will have opportunities to role play the stories to ensure correct sequence before they independently sequence the story.

In writing, Primary 1 will focus on descriptive writing. The children will describe familiar objects before moving on to describe characters from known stories. Primary 1 will use the descriptive bubble to support this learning. The children will begin to describe orally. They will then focus on creating detailed drawings of objects and characters before attempting to write descriptions.

Primary 1 will continue to develop their talking and listening skills; understanding when to listen and when to respond, taking turns and communicating with others. They will also continue to develop their fine motor skills and pincer grip which will enable them to write their names independently as well as form letters and numbers in the correct way.

Numeracy and Mathematics

Numeracy – This term, Primary 1 will have lots of opportunities to practise and consolidate their knowledge of numbers to 10 as well as quantities to 10 in a range of different ways. As Primary 1 become more confident when comparing quantities, they will now think about “more” and “less”. In addition to this, Primary 1 will begin to learn about the concept of addition within 10. They will have the opportunity to use a range of concrete resources to develop their understanding of this new concept before moving towards applying their knowledge mentally. Primary 1 will have the opportunity to apply their learning through daily number talks.

Mathematics – Primary 1 will continue to develop their information handling skills this term. They will also gain an understanding of money through their shops and shopping topic. As Primary 1 begin to work on this, they will learn about rhyme and rhythm by concentrating on Nursery Rhymes. Primary 1 have already enjoyed participating in activities focused on Humpty Dumpty, Twinkle, Twinkle and Hickory Dickory (to name a few). They particularly enjoyed role playing Humpty Dumpty on our playground obstacle course as well as making their very own twinkling stars. Primary 1 will develop their understanding of rhyme by listening for words that sound the same at the end as well as clapping out syllables. As Primary 1 develop their phonological awareness, they will in turn develop their talking and listening skills; understanding when to listen and when to respond, taking turns and communicating with others. Primary 1 will play lots of games to develop the building blocks of literacy.

Another focus for Primary 1 this term will be developing their fine motor skills and pincer grip which will enable them to write their names as well as form letters and numbers in the correct way.

Numeracy and Mathematics

Numeracy – This term, Primary 1 will be developing their “number sense”. The children will be focusing on identifying number digits to 10 through sequencing as well as counting out quantities and matching these to the correct digit. Primary 1 will have lots of opportunities to practice and consolidate their learning in a range of different ways. As the children become more confident in counting out, they will begin to compare quantities, thinking about “more” and “less”.

Mathematics – Primary 1 will be learning all about pattern. They will investigate lots of different patterns within their environment, both natural and man-made. Primary 1 will spend time exploring colours and texture as well as creating their own repeating patterns using a range of materials. They will transfer their knowledge of pattern as they develop their number sense. Primary 1 will also develop their data handling skills this term. They will use a range of natural resources as well as take their learning outdoors to support their learning experiences. They will sort and match objects in a variety of different ways according to their own and others criteria.

Health and Wellbeing

Primary 1 listened to the story “The Cautious Caterpillar” during their first week of school. They compared themselves to the main character, Cody the Caterpillar. They decided that they were like Cody; ready to “grow up”, becoming beautiful primary 1 butterflies. They created their class charter and made their classroom promise thinking of their rights, needs, and wants. They set classroom rules, and everyone made their own caterpillar as well as a beautiful butterfly to remind them to follow the rules and always show kindness.

Primary 1 will learn all about their emotions through our PATHS programme. The children have already met their new friends; Twiggle, Henrietta, Duke and Daphne. They have really enjoyed engaging with the puppets and love it when they visit our classroom. Most recently, Twiggle introduced the children to “Pupil of the Day”. Each child will have the opportunity to be “Pupil of the Day”, they will receive compliments from their peers on this day as well as have special jobs to do throughout the day such as “line leader” and “prayer leader”. So far, the children have really enjoyed this experience.

As Primary 1 grow in confidence, recognising and identifying initial sounds they will use this knowledge to word build. In addition to this, Primary 1 will be learning new common words every week alongside the initial sounds. Primary 1 will have lots of opportunities to practice each new sound and common words in a range of active ways in line with the Active Literacy approach to learning. As Primary 1 become more confident when word building and recognising common words they will focus on using these words to build simple sentences as well as apply this knowledge to read worded texts.

While We Can’t Hug

Hello Everyone,

We know that having to socially distance from your family and friends can be really tough. We feel this way too. When you see your favourite people from a distance all you want to do is give them the biggest hug. Sadly, we can’t hug right now and while we can’t hug, Owl has some super ideas for Hedgehog and Tortoise to show someone how much they care. Maybe you could try some of Owl’s ideas too.
