Class Information

Week beginning 22nd June

I cannot believe we are in our final week of P2! As it is the last week before the summer holidays it will be a little different. I have made a list of activities for you to try throughout the week. You do not need to do them all! There will only be one Assignment folder – anything that you complete, please upload on Teams or on personal blogs. The most important thing this week is that I want you all to have fun, spend lots of time outdoors, play with your toys, bake or watch movies. I would love to see what you get up to this week!

Reading – Bug Club Book

Before clicking on your book have a look at the front cover. Do you think it is a fiction or non-fiction text? Why?

Open your book and look at the pictures only. Tell an adult what you think is happening in each picture or what you think each page is about?

Read the book to yourself and then to an adult.

Finally answer the bugs.

Spelling – phoneme story ‘igh

Sing the alphabet together (Phonic Song 2).

Then say what sound each letter makes.

Point to each joined phoneme (see grid) and read them together with your child.

Introduce the next phoneme. Say ‘igh’ and ask your child to look at what your mouth does, what shape it makes? Then ask your child to say the sound and think about what their own mouth is doing. Explain to your child that with our Scottish accent this phoneme sounds different in some words. The ‘igh’ in night sounds different to the ‘igh’ in high.

Write the phoneme in the air then on the table or carpet in front of you.

Read the phoneme story for ‘igh’ to your child and ask them to touch their nose when they hear the phoneme.

Can they think of any other words which contain the phoneme?

Phoneme hunt – choose a book and look through it to see if you can find any words which contain the phoneme ‘igh’.

How many seconds are there in half a minute? Establish that there are 30 seconds in half a minute and ask your child to close their eyes for 30 seconds. Are they able to judge this from their estimation of 1 minute? You could explore multiples of seconds, e.g. 1, 5, 10, 15, 45 seconds and 11_2 minutes (or 90 seconds). Discuss the length of an hour. Can they imagine what it would be like to close their eyes for this length of time?

Make three lists: in 1 second I can …, in 1 minute I can …, and in 1 hour I can …. Ask your child what things they think they can do in those time periods. Take feedback and add their suggestions to the lists. Discuss what they have said. If appropriate, try out some of the suggestions for 1 second and 1 minute

Spelling – Stage 2 Assessment a

It would be good to have an idea of where children’s understanding is at with the phonemes we have been learning so this week is going to be a consolidation/assessment week and we will learn a new sound next week.

The first part of the assessment is to see if children can recognise the sound that the phoneme makes, children reads the phoneme and if they get it right if you put a tick below the phoneme and if they get it wrong put a dot.

For the second part children have to attempt to read the word. If they can read the word, please tick the box, and if they can’t please put a dot.

For the final part children have to attempt to read the word and then write the word below.

Literacy – Elkonin boxes. Use your phoneme words: owl, brown, growl, now, crown, allow, cow and separate the words into their different sounds. eg: g  r  ow  l,  h  ow  l. Either draw the boxes for the children to complete or use this template. https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/public/gargpr23c/uploads/sites/9756/2020/03/26201042/Elkonin-boxes.pdf

Dictation – Read the sentences from the document below to your child and ask them to write them down. Remind them of the core targets – full stops, capital letters and finger spaces. How many words have they spelled correctly? Our ow sentence is: We found a brown cow in our garden. Revise any phonemes or common words they have had difficulty with. Choose any sentences from week 4, 8 or up to week 12. https://blogs.glowscotland.org.uk/ea/public/gargpr23c/uploads/sites/9756/2020/03/25153709/Active-Literacy-Stage-2-Dictated-Sentences.pdf

Morning everyone! Hope you all had a nice weekend.

Reading – Bug Club books have been allocated online.

Spelling – Phoneme Story ‘OW’

Sing along to the Phonics Song on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BELlZKpi1Zs&list=PLsvyXpV3qbcRibLb-S65ZQ6jPlSEjczOY

Say ‘ow’ (owl) and think about what your mouth does. Look at a family member as they make the sound. What does their mouth look like?

Write the phoneme in the air then on the table or carpet in front of you. Write the phoneme on someone’s back.

Read the phoneme story for ‘ow’ to your child and ask them to touch their nose when they hear the phoneme. Can they find the words written down?

Can they think of any other words which contain the phoneme?

Choose one word and use it in a sentence.

Phoneme story ‘ow’

27/3/2020

Morning everyone! For literacy if children could write a few sentences about what they have been doing over the past few days. Remembering to use capital letters, finger spaces, full stops, connectives and some adjectives in their writing. They could even include some of their feelings in their writing. At 11am on The World of David Walliams you can listen to one of his World’s Worst Children stories. Also, if anyone has Amazon Prime I’ve found out that their audiobooks are free for a full month (just if anyone already has prime).
For numeracy children should try to complete their daily 10, either online on the assignment tab or by writing out questions on paper or a whiteboard.
For PE children could try a few of the Just Dance videos on youtube.
BBC Teach School Radio have released a series of music lessons for children based on Little Red Riding Hood so explore this if you wish https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/music-ks1-little-red-riding-hood-index/zryw8xs
If anyone would like to try and science experiments there are lots of ideas for experiments using things that you might already have around the house at this link here: https://mommypoppins.com/kids/50-easy-science-experiments-for-kids-fun-educational-activities-using-household-stuff.
Hope everyone has a nice day and a lovely weekend. Again, I would love to see pictures, videos or hear about your learning🙂

Morning everyone! Miss Kinnaird is tired after her workout yesterday so she will be doing hers later on. For PE Joe Wicks workout is available from 9am onwards or you can go onto Youtube for Cosmic Kids Yoga (a lot of the children enjoy this).

For literacy there are four new common words this week: what, many, soon and book. Practise these in any way you wish or I would love to see some sentences.

For numeracy I will attempt to upload a skip counting / multiplication by 5 sheet in the assignments option. It seems that people are having difficulty accessing this so I will also put a screenshot of it up and you can even discuss it with children. On Sum Dog there is a Multiplication Challenge for Children to do.

Skip counting and multiplication of 5

Please find attached a knights and castles learning grid also, choose as many or as few as you would like to complete whenever you wish. I would love to see your learning. Enjoy!

Hi everyone, just to make you aware that I have set up an online Microsoft teams account through the children’s glow sign on. I will be uploading work for children to complete every day at their own leisure. I know just now is a very confusing and tricky time for everyone so please do not stress out about getting all of this completed. The most important thing right now is that we all try and stay safe.

20/3/2020

Can I just say how much of a pleasure it has been teaching all of your lovely children up until this point. We had a fantastic last day for the foreseeable with sweeties, a movie, making mothers day cards, building, colouring and drawing. I have my fingers crossed that this will all pass quicker than expected and all the children will be back together in P2A soon. Here’s some pictures of what we have been doing the past few weeks.

28/2/2020

Solo talks will take place on Monday and Tuesday the 2nd and 3rd of March. If children can bring everything in on the Monday- USB sticks with powerpoints/posters/books/notes etc. If you need till the Tuesday to get organised then bringing it in on the Tuesday is also fine.

Here is our class jigsaw for term 2.

p2a jigsaw

28/1/2020

Today in numeracy we were looking at position and movement. Creating mazes and discussing the directions the marble had to move in, programming the b-bots, coding our way through mazes, giving our blindfolded friends directions and creating maps and writing instructions to go with it.

28/1/2020

Today we learned about Charles Rennie Mackintosh and began creating beautiful watercolour inspired pieces.

22/1/2020

A lot of the children seem to be bringing in tic tacs for their snack the last couple of weeks. Can I please ask that they do not bring these in as they seem to not be finishing them during break and are eating them in class. Thank you.

20/1/2020

Today we were working hard learning our new sound ‘ea’ and looking at our common words.

14/1/2020

Over the last couple of days we have been working so hard creating our beautiful pointillism highland cows. Don’t you think they look fantastic?

14/1/2020

This week we have been focusing more on subtraction and using different strategies to help us solve calculations.

13/1/2020

What a hectic first week back! It was so good to see all the children back after what sounds to be a lovely Christmas holiday for all. Happy New Year to everyone. Just to inform everyone that as of next week our library time will now be Tuesday before break as COGS groups will now be starting back as of next week so we have had to change our allocated time slot.

19/12/2019

Children can bring a game from home for tomorrow if they wish. Please avoid games with lots of small parts that could go missing and more expensive games as I would hate for them to be damaged. Thank you.

19/12/2019

We had lots of fun baking festive Christmas biscuits this week. We were so good at following the instructions and designed some fantastic creations.

26/11/2019

Today we were showing our understanding of the ‘oa’ sound that we have been learning about this week. We were creating oa words, writing sentences with oa words, finding it in a passage and in books, reading oa words and using our Active Literacy strategy with our learning partner to practise our oa words.

25/11/2019

Children have received two tickets for their nativity performance on  Monday 9th, these should be in their bag. Also in their yellow book there is a label to tell you what part your child has and what they should wear on the night if this is possible, thank you.

22/11/2019

Every Friday we are enjoying partnering up with our reading buddy to improve our reading skills. Our reading buddies can’t believe how good we are getting at reading.

5/11/2019

Today in numeracy we were looking at measuring using non standard and standard units.

31/10/2019

Some of our super sentences from last week!

31/10/2019

In numeracy we have been looking at estimation and rounding.

31/10/2019

Happy Official Halloween from P2B. Here is a picture of us looking spooky on Kilmarnock Halloween.  We had lots of fun through in Base 2 on Friday with Halloween music, bobbing for apples, pinning the smile on the skeleton, playing and creating Halloween crafts.

22/10/2019

I hope everyone has had a lovely October holiday, it was lovely finding out from the children today what they have been busy getting up to. Children should have a label in their yellow book regarding Halloween on Friday. Children can bring a Halloween costume to change into at lunch if they would like to dress up, children should not come to school in their costume. If children could bring in a small snack and an apple on Friday then that would be great as we are going to be having a base Halloween party in the afternoon.

9/10/2019

We have been working really hard over the past few weeks on our sentences. Here is some of our sentence work on whiteboards.

9/10/2019

In numeracy today we were looking at skip counting in 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. The children all worked extremely hard on their jobs.

4/10/2019

Children should have received their parents evening appointment today. This is stapled into their yellow books.

1/10/2019

We were busy during numeracy time continuing on with our odd and even number jobs.

We continued to work on our ‘wh’ sound through our literacy activities.

30/9/2019

Today we learned our new sound ‘wh’. We did a super job of breaking our words up into the individual phonemes in elkonin boxes and then created sentences using our ‘wh’ words

Today we enjoyed the nice weather outside and were very busy showing our odd and even number work.

25/9/2019

This afternoon for STEM we built a dinosaur out of marshmallows and straws/cocktail sticks. It was a very messy and tricky job but we tried our best and managed to create some super dinosaurs. Some of them were even able to stay standing when we let go of them and we got to enjoy some marshmallows afterwards.

25/9/2019

We have been very busy in P2A during numeracy time today. We have been looking at odd and even numbers and ordering and matching the number names zero to twenty.

11/09/2019

It was lovely to meet you all today. I had planned to discuss a few things before giving you all the opportunity to explore the classroom and activities with your child. Please see below.

Dinosaurs – We are enjoying learning all about dinosaurs and have began setting up a dinosaur role play area. If children have anything dinosaur related that they wish to bring in then children can do this but I would advise them to be labelled so that they can be returned safely.

Homework – Children should have an active spelling literacy grid in a polypocket with a spelling strategies card, their words of the week, a wordsearch and a graffiti wall worksheet. They will get their new words every Monday and also a numeracy activity which will be linked to what we are doing in class, Bug Club books will be allocated online. Children should keep all the word lists in this polypocket and could continually revisit these at home (if you wish to get a folder which closes so things are safer then feel free to do so). Children should hand in any homework they have done on a Friday (If it suits better to return it the week later on Monday then feel free to do so). If you have lost any of these things then please put a note in your child’s yellow book and I will be sure to get these sent home. I will be printing out additional copies of the graffiti wall and wordsearch worksheet as I am aware lots of children have already completed these. If children are doing any rainbow, squiggly, pyramid or bubble writing etc at home I would love to see this too.

Gym – Gym days are on a Tuesday and Friday, you can see what we will be covering in our term 1 jigsaw. Children should have a gym bag in class with shorts and gym shoes.

Library – Library is on a Wednesday if children could please bring books along to change.

Yellow Book – If there are any issues or concerns please do not hesitate to write in your child’s yellow book and I will get back to you.

It was lovely to meet you all, thank you for coming to visit our classroom.

Term 1 Jigsaw

This is our class jigsaw to show you a brief overview of the things we hope to cover until Christmas.

Jigsaw-term-1-2019

10th September

Today we took our learning outside. We have been focusing on information handling over the last two weeks and today we were able to sort ourselves into a Venn diagram, depending on different criteria. Whilst we were out we also managed to measure the length of a Tyrannosaurus-Rex. We measured out 12 metres and then we lay down to see how many of us together measured the same length as the T-Rex, 10 of us! I think we were feeling glad of a lie down after a busy few weeks in P2A.

Classroom Charter

We have been working on creating our classroom charter which we chose to be superhero themed. We came up with three classroom rules that we must all follow: we will listen to each other, we will respect our classroom and we will be kind to everybody. We also looked at the UNICEF Rights of the Child and decided as a class that Article 28, Article 12 and Article 31 were very important rights that we felt had to be displayed on our charter.
