PATHS – Ask the Coach

At Mauchline Primary we realise that the current situation can be challenging for everyone, both adults and children and we are eager to support you as best we can as we face these challenges together.

As part of our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) our coach (Hazel) from Barnardo’s Scotland, who supports the implementation of the PATHS® programme in school will be taking questions relating to the Social and Emotional Health and Wellbeing of parents, children and family members

If you or your child have any questions regarding challenges you are currently experiencingperhaps dealing with difficult feelings or behaviours in your home or dealing with new challenges presented by staying at home, you can send Hazel your question anonymously via the forms below and she will respond.

As always, if you have a particular concern regarding your child that you want to discuss please contact us directly and we will be happy to talk over the phone or via email.

IT’S NATIONAL NUMERACY DAY!!

The UK’s first ever online festival to help the nation with numbers is available right now on www.numeracyday.com

The Festival is being kicked off by National Numeracy Ambassador Rachel Riley, with later appearances from the likes of Martin Lewis, Bobby Seagull, Lauren Child reading from her Charlie and Lola and Ruby Redfort maths-focussed books, Carol Vorderman answering questions about unlocking maths confidence, Maths for Mums and Dads author Rob Eastaway sharing tips on how to teach maths at home, the Bank of England’s Andy Haldane helping with household finance and more. Even Amazon’s Alexa will be joining in by answering questions about numeracy.

The National Numeracy Day Virtual Festival covers three areas people want support with during this challenging time: helping children; personal development; and getting to grips with household finance. It aims to help everyone feel a bit better about their number skills.

Why not see for yourself!

During lockdown, you have been busy using many of your numeracy skills & learning in different ways at home & this is a great achievement that we want to celebrate!
So this National Numeracy Day, we want to show off your wonderful learning by putting together a video of all of your photos of your baking, shopping, shape hunts, etc!
To be a part of this, please send photographs to Miss Millar by emailing the address below by 1pm on Tuesday 12th May:

Right of the Week!

Our school have been learning about Rights for some time so I thought we could keep our wonderful learning in this area going. So every Tuesday I will be posting a ‘Right of the Week’ with a link to some resources should you want to take this learning further.

This week we are starting with a very important right: article 24. This right relates a lot to what is going on in the world just now. Article 24 states that you have the right to the best health care and you have the right to all of the things you need to stay healthy. Please see the link below for more information & activities related to this & feel free to send me any activities you complete.

Article of the Week

Stay Safe!

To celebrate, the whole school will dress down on Wednesday the 20th November & will try to wear blue. This is a free event to raise awareness. Pupils will also take part in activities in class during the day to celebrate the special occasion.

PATHS

This year at Mauchline Primary, we have joined many other schools across the UK, and beyond, who use the PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) Programme.  We will have PATHS lessons twice a week.

What is PATHS?

PATHS is a programme of lessons and strategies that helps children manage their emotions, communicate effectively and problem solve independently.

It takes a holistic approach to include all children, families and staff therefore we will be running information sessions soon!

PATHS is a research based programme grounded in the science of children’s brain development. It uses progressive schemes of work, engaging resources and diverse activities to establish a positive classroom.

PATHS helps children with…

  • Self-esteem, self-confidence and self-control
  • Frustration & anger management
  • Attention and concentration
  • Thinking before they act out in anger
  • Emotional understanding
  • Expressing their feelings in a positive way
  • Understanding that all feelings are okay, but some behaviours are not ok
  • Preparing for change (e.g. moving to high school)

For more information, feel free to get in touch with the school or have a look at the handout or website below. Also, keep an eye out for information sessions coming soon!
