Restart A Heart

Pillows and jumpers at the ready! Thursday saw the whole school learn how to ‘Restart a Heart’ as part of a nationwide drive to train as many people as possible in CPR. We learned about the 3Cs –

  • CHECK – check for danger, then gently shake the person’s shoulders to see if they are responsive.
  • CALL – dial 999 and put the phone on loud speaker.
  • CPR – check if the person is breathing by looking at their chest and putting your cheek to their mouth to feel for their breath. If they are not, interlock your fingers and start pushing down using the heel of your hand in the middle of the chest to perform CPR. We listened to the song ‘Baby Shark’ and tried to push down in time to the music to know how fast to go.

We also learned some interesting facts about the human body – that blood travels 19,000km around the body in a day, and that the average heart beats 6 billion times in a lifetime.

Finally, we learned the science behind CPR – that our heart is the main pump in our body to push the blood around, which gives our body oxygen. By performing CPR, we are helping to keep the blood and therefore oxygen moving around the body.

Have a keek below to see P4-7 in action performing CPR on their pillows! I’m sure everyone would agree it’s a hugely important life skill to have – but hopefully one no one will ever need to use!
