Sprinting in to Maths Week at Leswalt!🏃🏼

This afternoon P4-7 kicked off Maths Week Scotland with Leswalt Olympics!!🥇As part of this year’s theme ‘Maths Matters’ P4-7 explored how maths is important in sports by hosting their own Olympic games over at the park. House Captains, Lily (Lochnaw) and Olivia (Soleburn)took charge, organising the class into their house teams for the races.

First up, the age old classic, the sprint race! Pupils took part in the sprint race, where ‘time’ was the focus. Pupils used stopwatches on the iPads to time their team mates in the sprint afterwards, everybody recorded their time in s/ms decimal form compared times, putting the decimals in order. 🫡

Next – the well anticipated long jump! House Captains lay the metre sticks and tape measures in a big long line, making sure they matched up, ending at 1 metre and starting the next at 0.🏃 We all enjoyed taking a big run and jump and quickly realised that the athletes made it look easier than it was in reality… After recording our scores in metres and centimetres, Lily took top spot with an impressive 4m 70cm! 🙂

The third event was the beanbag throw and for Mrs Lincoln dodgeball! Pupils were challenged to throw the beanbag as far as they could and their teammates used trundles wheels to accurately measure the distance the beanbag travelled!

Next up – another Olympic classic, the ‘monkey race’ 🐒. All the boys and girls lined up across the starting line and raced on all fours to finish the race in 1st, 2^nd and 3rd.

The last event of the day was the hula hoop race, which, again, we realised was harder than it looked! Soleburn and Lochnaw worked in their teams, using their iPad, to time how long each player could keep the hoop circling around their hips. After recording their scores and comparing times, Olivia took the crown with a very impressive 12 seconds, 20 milliseconds!

We realised that while we had so much fun, we put into practice so much of our maths learning.

Time – using the iPad stopwatch to time our friends running and hula hooping.

Measure – with metrestick/tape measures and trundle wheels in the beanbag throw and long jump

Place value – comparing and ordering scores

Decimals – recording our decimal scores on our recording sheets.
