P1M 2019-2020 31.1.2020

Its been another busy and productive week in class!

Literacy

We have learned two new sounds this week which are ‘igh’ like ‘light’ and ‘ow’ as in ‘snow.’ In reading the children are becoming more independent and learned how to sound out tricky words when we get stuck or missing the word out then looking for clues on the page/picture.

As part of our Literacy we have also started learning some favourite songs, with Makaton through ‘Singing Hands’ on YouTube. This week we have enjoyed learning how to sign to George Ezra, ‘Shotgun.’

If you’d like to carry this on at home I’ve provided the link below.

Numeracy

We have been consolidating our knowledge of addition within 10 this week and next week we will begin to use this knowledge to work with money.

The Body

There was high excitement on Thursday afternoon as we discovered more about the human heart. We learned that the heart pumps blood around the whole body. We then conducted an experiment to see how the heart squeezes and pushes blood around.

Here are our star writers of the week are Eva and Kole! Well done! Your news stories were fabulous.

2019-2020

Class Newsletter: Term 3

 Primary 1M:

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you find the following information useful.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Learning in Term 2:

In term 2 we learned all about Space. We learned to recognise the sun, moon and stars and link these to times of the day and our routines at home and school. We learned how day and night are linked to the sun and the rotation of Planet Earth. We also learned about the solar system and managed to name and order the planets from the Sun.

We also worked really hard on developing our reading and writing skills. We learned more letter sounds and some digraphs (special friends).  We are continuing to practise our letter formation.

In Mathematics and Numeracy we continued to learn more about number and are continuing to practise our number formation.  We were also learning about the days of the week, months of the year, seasons,  pattern, 2D and 3D shape and

Learning focus this term:

Through our topic The Body we will be learning about:

  • The skeleton
  • The major organs
  • Spreading of germs and common diseases

If you have any experience in this area, please let us know. We would love to have some ‘experts’ come in to share in our learning journey.

Core Literacy:

  • We will continue to learn the sound digraphs and revise previously taught sounds.
  • Tricky words will be taught and used in class.
  • The children will continue to focus on using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops in their writing. Some children will begin using a connective to join 2 sentences together.
  • The children will also learn about labelling within their writing.
  • The children will be learning about different reading strategies such as looking for picture clues as they continue to develop their reading skills.
  • We will look also look at poetry and recite a Scots poem or song at our Scots Assembly.

Core Mathematics and Numeracy:

  • The children will be learning about time on both analogue and digital clocks.
  • The children will learn new Maths vocabulary related to addition and subtraction and will be able to recognise the Mathematical signs for the processes.
  • The children will be able to complete addition sums using a variety of resources to support them, such as cubes for counting and number lines to use for ‘counting on’.
  • Number formation and recognition will continue to be revised throughout this term.
  • Subtraction will be introduced and the children will be able to explain the difference between addition and subtraction.
  • The children will learn to work with money and will be able to recognise and name coins as well as work out the correct change to be given.
  • The children will learn to use tally marks and collect data.

Core Health and Wellbeing:

As part of our learning about the body, we will also be learning about respecting our bodies and the correct names for different body parts. More information on this will be sent out to parents. We will continue to develop our friendship skills, such as respect, sharing and listening.

This term, we are learning to be like Heard Hazel. Pupils will be able to receive their Heard Hazel certificate if they:

  1. Listen carefully
  2. Wait their turn and do not interrupt others
  3. Share their ideas with their classmates
  4. Allow others to have their say

We will have further certificates for other Redwell’s Rights and Respecting School characters later in the session.

We will learn about Buddhism in RME.

Yellow Wing Cuddle on the Couch:

Please help us to promote reading by joining us for Cuddle on the Couch. Come along to the Yellow Wing and spend some time reading with your child. If you require a schedule of Cuddle on the Couch dates, please contact the school office.

Please look out for more details about our Sharing of Learning afternoon later in the term.

Kind regards,

Emma McCole

P1M 2019-2020 17.1.2020

This week the children have been very busy in all aspects of their learning and having fun along the way.

Literacy

This week the children have finished consolidating their learning of all initial sounds and will begin learning new sounds next week. We wrote about our news this week and it’s lovely to see the children become increasingly independent during formal writing activities.

Here are this weeks star writers! Well done to you both!

Numeracy

we have completed our learning on o’clock times this week and it’s satisfying to see the children tell the time with o’clock so confidently. Next week we will begin learning about addition to 10.

Here are this weeks Maths Stars! Congratulations!

Topic

Our topic this term is the body. This week the children enjoyed learning about the skeleton. The children are aware the skeleton is made on bones and can even name the largest (femur) bone and smallest (stirrup) in the body. We worked cooperatively to create our own skeletons!

P1M 2019-2020 10.1.20

Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope everyone had a lovely holiday and it has been lovely to hear stories from the children about their time off.

Literacy

This week we have been revising some of the sounds that we learned in term 2. I have extended this learning by introducing a formal handwriting jotter. The children have enjoyed learning to write on lines and feel very grown up!

This week the children wrote about the Christmas presents they received this year and enjoyed having time to talk and share their news. This week we have two star writers! Well done!

Numeracy

This week we have started learning how to tell the time using o’clock on both an analogue and a digital clock. The children have been practising their new skills through games, show me activities with mini clocks as well as taking part in some songs about o’clock times.

Science/Health and Wellbeing

This term our topic will The Body. This week we spoke about what we would like to find out. Questions from the children included, ‘how do our eyeballs move’ to ‘Why do we be sick sometimes!’ Next week we will begin by looking at the skeleton.
