Class Newsletter – Term 2

Dear Parent/Carer,

I hope you find the following information useful.  If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.

Term 1 was very busy with a variety of different projects being started. We started with our mini Space topic looking at constellations, space travel and the size, scale, time and motion. We even found out what age we would be on other planets!

We then started our Scottish Parliament and Mock Court projects. They are linked by the law and justice systems. We learned about the different political parties, their manifestos and plans for the future.

Mock Court was a project that we all enjoyed. We took on a variety of roles such as solicitors, researchers, journalists, gown makers, court artists, and witnesses. We worked with a real solicitor who supported us at various points throughout the project. We have written legal documents and created productions to show in court. We recently visited Falkirk Sheriff court, where we were able to take our learning into a real world context. All children worked extremely hard and represented the school well. We are waiting to find out which teams will progress to the next stage of the competition.

General Information:

Children should bring a snack to school each day, to be eaten at break time, and a reusable plastic bottle with water in it to drink in class at appropriate times. To allow us to embrace opportunities for outdoor learning, children should come to school each day with an outdoor jacket.

Homework will be given each Monday, to be completed and returned by the Thursday. This will normally consist of a spelling activity and pages from their reading book, as well as often including work to consolidate the maths work done in class, and occasionally an activity relevant to our topic.

This year, our class will have PE on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. We also have our art specialist, Mrs Barron, coming to teach us every Monday and this term we will have Music with Mrs Pennie on a Tuesday in the lead up to the Christmas concerts.

Our final ‘Book and a Blether’ for this term is on Wednesday 5th December.

Positive Behaviour

To promote positive behaviour Primary 6 are using Class Dojo.  Please note we cannot access the messaging aspect of Class Dojo. Should you need to contact us please do so by telephone or in writing.

Each child will remain in the same school house team as last year. They are able to earn points for their house by following the Redwell Way in class, in the playground, and around the school.

    • area and how to measure in cm²
  • Pupils will investigate volume, measuring and estimating capacity
  • Pupils will continue to develop their speed and accuracy of number recall

Health and Wellbeing:

As a Health Promoting school we actively encourage and teach our children to make healthy choices, to enable then to become healthy, active and emotionally resilient young people of the future.

We are delighted to be able to continue to deliver 2 hours of PE a week as well as opportunities for children to be active in our fabulous new grounds.

We would appreciate your support in promoting a healthy and balanced diet, both in your child’s morning snack and in their packed lunch.  We would discourage any type of fizzy juice in school or energy drinks.  Children are encouraged to bring in a water bottle, which they can use during class time and refill during the day.  There are water fountains situated throughout the school for daily use.

Please encourage your child to participate in the Active Sports Clubs that are on offer at lunchtimes and after school, as well as any school based clubs that take place throughout the year.  Keep looking in school bags for further information.

A reminder that all children who cycle or scooter to school must wear a safety helmet and ‘walk’ their bikes whilst in the playground. There are bike racks available.

Playground toys:

We have a playground equipment for children to play with during lunchtime.  Please do not bring in your own toys – except for Golden Time on a Friday – so that we can be sure that all toys in the playground belong to the school.  Many thanks for your support.

Golden Time toys:

Children can bring a ‘toy’ to school on a Friday to play with during Golden Time. Please remember that the school cannot take responsibility for the safety of these toys and therefore we request that your child does not bring in expensive/ electronic items without your consent.  We appreciate your support with this matter.

Mobile Phones:

Children may bring a mobile phone to school however these will be stored in a locked classroom cupboard until home time and cannot be used during the school day.

I look forward to working in partnership with you this session.

Kind regards

Miss Robinson

19.11.18 – 23.11.18

Here is our class blog for this week:

In maths, we will develop our confidence in using the written method for multiplication.

Remember that there are in-service days at the end of next week, so pupils are only in school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

12.11.18 – 16.11.18

We have had an extremely busy week in P6R this week, as we concluded our Mock Court Project with a visit to Falkirk Sheriff Court to participate in a mock trial.

Here is a summary of what we have been up to in school this week:

Next week, we will be continuing to reinforce our work on multiplication and division in maths.

We will also be preparing for our Sharing of Learning event, considering the school values and building upon some of our work done during anti-bullying week.

Hope you all have a restful weekend!

05.11.18 – 09.11.18

Here is our class blog for this week:

Next week, our Mock Court work will be culminating in our visit to the Sheriff Court to have our mock trial.

In maths, we will look at multiplying and dividing by 10, 100 and 1000.

Our writing will have a WW1 focus as we write diary entries from the point of view of a WW1 soldier.

Outdoor Learning Day! (and 29.10.18 – 02.11.18)

Today was Outdoor Learning Day. As we have been thinking about descriptive language in our different types of writing, we used this as an opportunity to investigate onomatopoeia.

After reading some examples on onomatopoeia, and coming with some of out own, we headed outside!

We had to write down some of the things which we saw, and think of onomatopoeic words to describe them, specifically thinking about things which make us think of autumn. We enjoyed crunching in the frost and the leaves to hear the different sounds which they made:

Back in class, we put out words into sentences, then each pair chose their favourite sentence and we made them into a class poem about autumn:

We also had the fantastic opportunity to go into our school herb garden with Mrs Johnstone today, to feel, smell and taste some of the herbs which our nature group have been helping to grow. Mint was a particular favourite!

We also had our PE lesson outside, practising our cross country running:

We have spent much of the rest of our week learning about health and wellbeing through participating in Rookie Rockstars, as we also practised our expressive arts.

Next week, as with this week, we will continue to develop our division knowledge, whilst practising our quick recall of times tables facts. We will also continue to prepare for our Mock Court case.

22.10.18 – 26.10.18

Here is our summary of what we have been doing in P6R this week:

Next week, we will continue to have a focus on division in maths, and spend time practising our times tables to support us in this work.

We will be developing our work for the Mock Court project, beginning to look at our debates and production of evidence.

Preparations for Rookie Rockstars will also be happening in school every day next week – it sounds like a very exciting project to be involved in!

08.10.18 – 12.10.18

Here is our class blog for this week:

When we return after the holidays, we’ll be building upon our understanding of multiplication and division in maths.

In writing, we will continue to work on writing newspaper reports on a variety of topics.

Our Mock Court Project continues after the holidays, and we will all be working on our different roles as part of this.

PE kits have been sent home to be washed over the holidays, if possible. Could these please return to school on the first day back.

Hope you have a lovely October Week!

01.10.18 – 05.10.18

A different style of blog this week!

In P6R we have been working on data handling in maths this week. We have been collecting our own data, learning how to interpret a variety of types of graphs, and are beginning to learn about the range, mode, and median. We will continue to build on this learning next week.

In writing, we did our writing assessment, using all of the descriptive language skills which we have been learning over the last few weeks as we wrote an imaginative story about a castle.

For our topic learning, we researched and created posters about the different political parties in the UK. We had to find our information such as their leader, logo, and most recent manifesto. We will present our learning to the rest of the class next week.

Hope you have a good weekend!
