Homework

Each term learners will be given a homework grid to take home and complete with their family and friends. We look forward to seeing all your creative ideas and don’t forget to tweet @abercrombyps!

Why have we changed homework at Abercromby?

We recently carried out a survey to allow us to find out more about how parents/ carers feel about homework at Abercromby Primary School.  There were 109 responses and the survey showed some interesting findings. From the survey we found out that:

  • 55% of respondents said that their child’s enjoyment of homework was not much or not at all
  • Only 18% of respondents said that their child liked homework quite a lot or a lot (4%)
  • 52% felt their child had too much homework, 39% felt it was right, 9% too little
  • 33% of parents felt homework was a positive experience

With consideration of these findings, and the useful comments that were contributed, we would like to trial a new homework grid format to encourage a more flexible approach to family learning.

How will it work?

Each pupil will receive one grid per term which will be split up into literacy, numeracy and ‘other’ for Early Level pupils and literacy, spelling, numeracy and ‘other’ for First and Second Level pupils.  Please encourage your child to complete an activity from each column every week and remember to Tweet any photos you’d like to share, using @abercrombyps.

Please note that the aim of this homework is to ensure enjoyment and choice, and to support learning at home. Activities can be marked by your child’s class teacher if handed in on a Friday, although most of the activities may not require this. Also note that activities can be completed more than once per term. Most pupils will also continue to receive reading books.

As this new format is being used on a trial basis, we will be asking for feedback towards the end of the term. If this trial is successful, we will roll out this format each term across the school.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank all parents for any feedback we receive – it is extremely valuable in providing our learners with positive experiences at Abercromby.
