Broad General Education S1-3

During their time in S1 English, all pupils will study a range of prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction texts to develop their literacy skills of reading, writing, talking and listening. They will read texts to develop their understanding, analysis and evaluation skills. They will learn how to write in a variety of styles and genres: critical essays, scripts, short stories, personal essays, advertisements and reports. Talking and Listening skills will be developed informally through ongoing class and group discussion as well as solo talks or presentations.

In S2 English, pupils will build on the skills learned in S1 and will be grouped according to their ability, allowing them to progress at their own pace. They will study a range of prose, poetry, drama and non-fiction texts to develop their literacy skills of reading, writing, talking and listening. They will further develop their understanding, analysis and evaluation skills when studying texts. They will develop the writing skills learned in S1 by producing a variety of written texts: critical essays, short stories, personal/reflective essays, reports and discursive essays. Talking and Listening skills will be developed through class and group discussion and solo talks/presentations.

The S3 English course builds upon work covered in S1 and S2. The units that will be covered from May – December include a film study, the short story and discursive writing. Classes may also study drama, poetry and the novel. Pupils will be given opportunities to develop their critical and creative skills through a range of reading, writing, talking and listening activities. National Qualification courses are started in January.

In addition to this, pupils in S1-S3 are given the opportunity to improve upon their basic skills in close reading, spelling, grammar and punctuation through classroom teaching.

To supplement class work, pupils are expected to complete regular homework. This should come from the Homework Booklet (links below) and should also include regular private reading as the pupils will be encouraged to read a wide range of fiction and non-fiction from the school library. Regular visits to the library are built into the English course. Teachers are also free to set any other homework as the need arises in accordance with the Departmental Homework Policy.
