SFDF – food and health

About our work with schools

Bringing Scotland’s schools and food and drink manufacturers together.

Through our schools work – A Future in Food – we help teachers, pupils and parents better understand the food and drink industry in Scotland, highlight the wide variety of careers on offer and the routes to access them.

As part of this work we create and support long-term partnerships between schools and food and drink companies that support A Curriculum for Excellence. Pupils not only gain a better understanding of where their food comes from and how it is produced but also gain practical skills via real life experiences and active engagement with industry.

For schools that are looking for support for a specific event or activity we have 300 food and drink ambassadors from across the food chain that can help at career events, host site visits or run classroom workshops. If you work in food and drink and would like encourage young people to consider food and drink as a career, sign up as a food and drink ambassador.

We have also developed a range of resources both for teachers to use in the classroom and for industry to use when working with schools. This includes:

  • Understanding and using food labels which helps teachers and pupils understand how to read food labels and make informed and educated food choices.
  • Featured Case Studies These highlight examples of schools and industry working together to bring the curriculum to life using food as a context for learning.
  • Food science videos six food science vide that will help to bring lessons to life. These include Emulsions; Enzymic Browning; Maillard Reaction; Oxidative Rancidity and Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC)
