National 5 Maths

What will I learn?

The aim of the National 5 Maths course is to provide learners with the skills required to solve mathematical and real-life problems using mathematical techniques and language.  This course enables learners to think abstractly in order to explore mathematical ideas.  Learners will gain skills in analysing, managing and communication information in mathematical form.  This course provides a solid foundation for learners aiming to progress to Higher Maths and beyond, particularly in STEM related areas.

What do I require to select this course?

You should have been working in the Fourth Curriculum Level during BGE or passed the National 4 Mathematics course prior to starting this course. You should have sound Algebraic skills!

How will I be assessed?

National 5 Maths has 3 units which are Assessed as a Whole Course Assessment.

The units are:

  • Expressions and Formulae
  • Relationships
  • Applications

The Course Assessment is an externally assessed exam consisting of 2 papers:

  • Non-calculator (1 hr 15 mins)
  • Calculator (1 hr 50 mins)

To gain a course award, learners must pass the Course Assessment.
