What a Wonderful Wig Walk!

Thank you SO much to everyone who contributed to the success of our ‘Walk your Wigs Off’ walk today.  This was our part of West Lothian Walking week, and what lovely weather we had for our walks. Thank you to Pumpherston Community Council and the West Lothian Council NETS team for the  loan of litter picking equipment – Pumpherston was looking very tidy today.  We had a fantastic team of helpers with us on the walk, thank you for coming along with us.  We hope you enjoyed it, we were very pleased to have you with us today.

Back at school we were raising money through our Dress Down Day pounds for Team Jak, a local charity raising money to build and improve facilities for young people with cancer – we are very proud to say we raised £200!

Well done everyone – remember, as it says in our song, ‘ I can, you can we can make a difference! ‘

Morrisons vouchers

Thank you to everyone who donated Morrisons ‘Let’s Grow’ vouchers to our school. We collected 1595 which will let us order more trowels, forks and planting equipment for our Ground Force box, and a couple of items to build up our food preparation equipment to help in our learning about Food and Health.

Harvest Service

Thank you again to everyone who donated goods to our Harvest table today. We were very grateful for all the food and produce brought in to school, and glad to be able to help our local community in this way. This year the table also included some of our OWN grown produce- the leeks were freshly pulled out of the raised beds this morning.

We hope everyone who joined us enjoyed our Harvest assembly and we wish all the best to everyone receiving a bag of Harvest goods. This year we were able to give bags to everyone nominated by our school family, and to send many bags to the West Lothian foodbank to help families in crisis. Thank you to the group of helpers who sorted out the bags for distribution. Your help is much appreciated.

We learned at Assembly how our money has helped our friends in Uganda to buy Braille machines for the school and orphanage in Magale, and we saw how happy the children were to receive a pencil each.

We can make a difference!

Walk your wings off

On Friday 19th September the school is going out litter picking.The theme is walk your wings off.You can wear your fairy wings or superhero cape.If you don’t have a superhero cape or fairy wings wear your invisible cape or wings.We have some parents/carers who offered to help us on the day.If you are free on the 19th of September please come along and help.We are grateful that we have a lady from our community council who is coming coming to help us with the litter pick.

Look what came today!

Our green flag

Early bird pupils were able to cheer on the raising of our Green flag as it was put in place first thing this morning! What a fantastic start to our week.

The Eco committee are still working hard on keeping our school recycling systems going, and encouraging everyone to use the litter bins. This month it is Primary 1 and 1/2 turn on the litter picking duty, so we’re sure the playground will be clean and clear. 

We are also planning an exciting competition which will take place in March. More details will follow, but in the meantime if you have an entertaining talent, keep practicing…

We noticed last week that some of the bulbs planted in the front border are already poking their leaves up to look for the sun, so it won’t be long til spring. Keep your eyes open and let us know if you see anything interesting growing in and around our grounds.

Primary 2

We went into the woodland beside our school to collect leaves, twigs and small stones to make a picture using natural resources found in our local environment.

P2 were very disappointed at the amount of dog mess left in a place they use for learning.  They would like everyone to remember to pick up after their pets.

We also checked the orchard for Mrs Hull to make sure there was no litter.

How does our garden grow?

Primary 4 are taking responsibility for a small piece of land within the school grounds and are going to develop it as a garden, ably assisted by Mrs. Hull.  Other classes have responsibilities for other parts of the school grounds and every class has a designated planter that they have planted and are taking care of.  All of this helped contribute towards our Green Flag Award which was truly a whole school effort.

 

The proposed garden was planned by the P4 class and has been weeded and rotovated previously by West Lothian Council’s Neighbourhood Environment Team but the soil quality wasn’t great.  Luckily the Neighbourhood Environment Team noticed this and brought us a big consignment of top soil to help improve our garden. 

The down side was – it arrived as a big pile and had to be added to the soil by our intrepid P4 gardeners.  Thankfully they seemed to enjoy this task and were excellent at taking turns and organising the required jobs amongst themselves, with a few helpful words from Mrs. Hull when needed. 

They made some interesting discoveries including a bright green caterpillar, how best to plant a planter and where the best places around the school are for planters.  A great time was had by all and we look forward to the next installment of ‘how does our garden grow?’.

Primary 3

Primary 3 have  been travelling back in time in their time machine to research how Victorian children lived.  We worked together to create a display of Victorian children for our classroom. We had great fun today on our wellie and onesie walk!
