Wanted: Willing Wombles! Community Litter Pick next week

Our big Autumn Litter pick, out in the villages of Pumpherston and Uphall Station, will take place next Thursday morning(Sept 19th).  We would like to have as many of our friends and families taking part as possible – if you have an hour or so to spare come and join in with the classes as they tidy up the local area. The first groups will leave the school at 9.15am.

We’ll be out and about on the streets and in the parks.  Members of WLC NETS team will be with us to give training, lend equipment and hand out the bright yellow vests we wear to show we’re all Keeping Scotland Beautiful. If you can help please contact the office and we’ll match you up with a group on the day.  Thank you!

News from the eco committee.

On the 23rd of September a important lady is coming to the school to see if our school is eco enough for the green flag.In our meeting on Tuesday we were talking about what we are going to do clean up around our school grounds, the suds pond and the school garden for our action plan this year. P5 have been doing ground force and they have been trying their hardest to keep our school grounds as clean as posible. P6 have been doing litter picking.

Any parents or friends of the school who would like to help with weeding, digging or planting this year would be very welcome. Please contact Mrs Hull at the school.

Thank you.

Nursery Garden News

This afternoon the children in the Nursery were finding out how the carrots, onions, peas and potatoes they planted in the Spring had grown over the Summer. Here are the results!

Orchard report 21 Aug. 13

The orchard is looking great, although there are no apples yet.  One tree has been damaged over the summer, it looks like rabbits have been there. The grass has grown longer in the holidays with lots of clover. Primary 7 found a couple of 4 leafed clovers when we were litter picking.                                                   Holly and Amy Primary 7.

Sad news about Fergus

Mrs Hull is sorry to say that when she went round to water Fergus the Sunflower on Friday, he had snapped in the wind.

Now we won’t be able to enter the West Lothian schools sunflower competition – but the Eco group will have a go at growing our own sunflowers to take home. We could have a whole team of Ferguses growing in and around the school to find out the best place for next year’s competition!

Fergus update

Oooh dear – we are worried about Fergus. He’s looking rather frazzled by the wind.  We gave him a good drink of water mixed with plant food today, and hope this will give him the energy he needs to grow some new leaves.  Come on Fergus, you can do it!

Members of the Eco club show their concern for Fergus the Sunflower

Meet the School Sunflower!

Today at Eco club Mrs Hull introduced Fergus, the new School Sunflower.  We are taking part in the Sunflower Challenge run by Rural connect and will be looking after Fergus and hoping he will grow taller than any other sunflower in a West Lothian School.  Today’s challenge was putting him in a bigger pot as he had outgrown the pot he was put in only 2 weeks ago!   He has been gently tethered to the side of the building.  Please wave to him as you go by in the morning and have a look at how tall he is – but please DON’T TOUCH as he is very fragile!

At 4pm today he measured 1 metre tall – can anyone estimate when he will reach the same height as Miss Speirs?

It’s Eco Week!

This week we will be learning a lot about our school grounds and tidying up our local community!
Throughout the week every class are taking on eco challenges and there are three big events happening;
Wednesday – tree planting in the school driveway and around the BMX track with staff and students from the Oatridge campus of the Scottish Agricultural College
Thursday– National Spring Clean when we are joined by the Environmental Wardens to pick up litter in Pumpherston and Uphall Station
Friday – Orchard Day! We will be planting our new Community orchard with Fruitful Schools and a team from News International who sponsored this as a competition prize in The Scottish Sun newspaper.

New date for Orchard Day!

Great News!

We can confirm that the date for our Orchard planting with News International and Fruitful Schools will take place on Friday 19th April 2013. Please contact the school office if you are able to help. We’d like as many helpers as possible to make this a true Community Orchard! Come along and join the fun from 9.30 am.

Orchard day postponed

The sponsors of our Community Orchard have asked us to postpone the planting day once more. We are sorry to disappoint you with this news, and hope to bring news of a definite date very soon.  Everyone is hoping this change of date will increase our chances of warmer (and drier?) weather…
