Term 4 Learning Overviews

Each term, teachers create a learning overview.  This is sent home with each child and a copy can be found here.  These are valuable sources of information to allow you to help your child at home with their learning.  Communication between home and school is a central part of making a difference for all children.

Glow Scotland

This week your child will bring home their Glow username and password. The weblink for Glow is https://glow.rmunify.com/ and it can be accessed through any device with an internet connection. As well as lots of educational resources, Glow provides access to your child’s school email account and Office 365. This allows your child to use Microsoft Word, Excel and Powerpoint from anywhere with an internet connection, even if it is not installed on their device.

Once your child has successfully logged in they will be able to access the Apps available (including Brainpop and TigTag World). They will also be able to access the School Site by clicking on the App as pictured below.

At the moment the School Site is being developed and will contain more content as time goes on.

When your child logs on for the first time they will need to agree to the following Glow Community Rules:

Be Secure

Always keep your Glow password to yourself.

Always sign out of Glow when no longer using it.

Be Polite

Always treat others with respect.

Never post or share a message, document, image, video or any other other content that is inappropriate or likely to cause harm or offence to others.

Be Safe

Always remember to be careful when communicating over the internet – other users may not be who they seem.

Don’t share your personal details with other people.

Never agree to meet someone in person who you have only met on the internet unless accompanied by a parent, carer or other known and trusted adult.

Speak to an adult immediately if you see a message, image or anything else on the internet that concerns you

Be Legal

Never post or share a message, document, image, video or any other other content that you do not have permission to use.

Be Responsible

Always be mindful that once you put something online, that information may be beyond your control.

Never post or share a message, document, image, video or any other content online that you would not wish other learners, teachers, or parents to see.

Remember that anything you do can be traced back to you.

If you misuse Glow, this can be reported to your school.

Upper school pupils should have already accessed Glow in school and tried out a few of the resources available. If your child has any problems accessing Glow they should inform their class teacher or Miss Anderson.

Further information about Glow is available Here.

Sum Dog School Code

If your class is using Sum Dog (http://www.sumdog.com) then your teacher will give you your username and password. This will let you use Sum Dog in school. If you want to use Sum Dog out of school you will also need to use our school code. Our school code is:

pumpherston-and-uphall-station

If you highlight this code and then copy and paste onto the Sum Dog log in page then you will be able to get logged in at home.

Happy Learning!

Miss Anderson 🙂

Fruitastic!

We have a new fruit stall on the P4 decking. Josh thinks that it is nice that we have a fruit stall. Jack H likes the fact that everyone in the class has a job. Amber likes that the fruit is juicy. Lewis P likes the green grapes. The fruit stall is getting busier and busier! The bananas are 30p, as are the oranges and apples. The grapes are 45p.

In other news we have been learning about the Commonwealth games. There are 53 nations involved, 16 of these nations share the same Queen as us! The foxes made a booklet about the Commonwealth games. We also learned a little about the World Cup and made leaflets.

In Maths we learned how to use kitchen scales and how to weigh lots of different things. We weighed potatoes and items that we found in school.

On Monday we learned how to play rugby with jack the rugby coach. On Wednesday we had Sports Day. Our class medals were won by;

Gold – Kadan and Joshua
Ella, Hannah and Courtney

Silver – Louisa, Hannah and Ella
Lewis C, Callum, Jack R

Bronze – Kadan, Callum and Craig
Louisa, Donatella and Amber

Well done to everyone who took part – we all did a super job!

In writing this week we learned how to write a CV (or a curriculum Vitae). A CV is important when you are applying for a job because the employer has to see what kind of person you are.

It was also the Beach Disco this week – most of us rated it 10/10!

Le collection de juin 2014

Primary 4 were looking très chic today as we held a class fashion show in French.  We were showing how much we have learned about the french words for clothes and colours.  Each of us had to describe what our partner was wearing as they posed on the cat walk.  Thank you to Miss Speirs and Mrs Hailstones for coming along to watch (and joining in!).  Photos by Aidan who was our fashion photographer today.

Au revoir!

Primary 4

This week Primary 4 really enjoyed learning about life in Uganda at assembly from our special visitors, Mr and Mrs Comrie. We learnt that people in Uganda need mosquito needs to keep them safe from Malaria and we were surprised to hear that many of the things we take for granted here, like pencils, are difficult for schools over there to get.

In Maths this week we have been learning about fractions. We know that 1/2 is the same as 2/4 and we can use our division skills to help us find a 1/3 and 1/5 of a number.

We have also been learning about alliteration. We identified the use of alliteration in poems and then used this knowledge to write our own.  We will post some examples of our alliterative poems soon!

Primary 4

Primary 4 really enjoyed their trip to Morrisons as part of their food and climate topic.  We got to meet lots of the staff and learn about some of the journeys our foods make.

Amber: I learnt how foods like bread and meat are prepared.

Donatella: I learnt how to gut a fish.

Ella: I liked the bakery part because we were told about lots of different things like the ovens.

Shannon: I liked looking at the bread and how they made it.

Louisa: I liked it when they told us about how they get all of the flowers to the shop. There are 36 different types.

Craig: I liked it when the man told us how he makes the bread.

Primary 4 were also very proud of Lewis, who won the school’s Eco Talent Show with a song he had written all by himself. Well done!

Kale from East Lothian.
The big ovens for baking our bread.
Strawberries from Spain.
Lewis's tree-mendous trophy!

Primary 4’s Fishy Day Out

Primary 4 attended a Seafood in Schools workshop, finding out about our Scottish fish and how they get to our plates. We also got to sample lots of different types of fish too!

Here are some of the things we had to say about our trip:

CJ: I liked trying the fish. Now I know I like it.

Angel: I learnt that there are 65 different types of fish in Scotland.

Samantha: I liked it when we saw the crab.

Ella: My favourite bit was making the smoked mackerel dip because it tastes AMAZING!

Donatella: I learnt that we have farms to grow mussels and oysters.

Hayden: I learnt that the boats that catch fish are called trawlers.

Sophie: I liked trying the fish and looking at the sea creatures.

More photos of the day to follow!

Primary 4

Primary 4 have been learning all about the digestive system. After discussing all the different stages involved in turning our food into nutrients and energy for our body, we created storyboards to describe the journey a piece of food makes.
