Term 3: Celebration Assembly
On Friday 29th March at 9:10am, we wll have our Term 3 Celebration Assembly. Those children who are receiving our STEM Superstar and Awesome Author awards have received an invite.
We will also be recognising:
- P7 Camp
- P7 Rotary Quiz
- P6 Euro Quiz
- P6 Skiiing
- P5 Camp
- Class Sumdog Awards
- Burns Competition Entries
Dr Peter Hughes, the previous Chief Executive of Scottish Engineering and previous President of The Robert Burns World Federation will be joining us to share his success story.
Please feel free to come along and help us celebrate!
P6 STEM
Primary 6 have been enjoying lots of STEM related learning this term. We started the term with our Scottish Inventors topic and are looking forward to sharing our learning from this in our class assembly this Friday morning. We have now started a new topic on the Solar System and had fun including visitors from home in our learning last week. We are learning about the planets in our Solar System and have been researching planets of our choice. Here are some interesting facts we have already discovered:
- Darci found out that Saturn has 62 moons and Gillon discovered that Pluto has 5 moons (compared to Earth’s one). Eilidh and Amber’s research showed that Mars’s 2 moons are called Phobos and Deimos.
- Samuel’s research showed that the atmosphere of Mars is made up of mostly carbon dioxide, while Jamie’s showed that Jupiter’s atmosphere consists mainly of hydrogen and helium.
- Mia discovered that the surface of Mars is covered in a fine dust similar to talcum powder.
- Amen found out that Saturn has a radius of 58, 232 km and it is 1.434 billion km from the Sun.
- Summer discovered that Mercury has a surface area of 74.8 million square kilometres.
- Samantha’s researched the dwarf planet of Eris and found that one year on Eris is the same as 557 years on Earth.
Sharing Our STEM Learning
On Wednesday 13th March we invited our families to come and share our STEM Learning with us. They joined in lots of different activities with their children, you can see some the learning opportunities below.
Thank you to everyone who came along to join us.

Feedback from our survey included:
What did you find out about your child’s learning that you did not already know?
- That they were doing human biology.
- My child knows more than he shows at home.
- I saw Didbook for the first time, it’s great.
- My child  is happy to accept help when offered
What other information would you like us to provide during Visit My Class sessions?
- Some feedback from teachers. I feel the gap is maybe a touch long between feedback sessions.
- If there is anything my child needs to improve on.
In what other ways can we support you to support your child at home?
Pumphie Pals: British Science Week: STEM
Primary 1 – STEM
Primary 4 STEM
This week the children participated in a STEM design challenge to create a sundial from readily available resources. Each member of the group had a specific role to play e.g. recorder, quality checker, team representative or resource manager to ensure that everyone played a part in the process. Groups had the opportunity to browse the available resources and then discussed their ideas of how to create their sundials. They then created their sundials before presenting them to the rest of the class, stating how they came up with their ideas, how the sundials would work and also discussing what they would do differently if they had to build them again. The children asked Miss Burton to judge their finished sundials. They answered questions based on the success criteria to help her to decide.
STEM in Primary 2S
As part of our STEM focus, Primary 2S have been learning all about different illnesses and medicines this week, how to stay safe around medicines and what makes us feel better when we are ill.
Molly, the P3 class puppet is visiting us and she is poorly. We worked together to diagnose Molly, checking her symptoms against different illnesses and have worked out that she has flu!
Sarah Jane visited the class yesterday to tell us all about natural medicines that can be found in plants and the different ways they can help us feel better when we are poorly. We learned about the benefits of willow tree, ginger, garlic, aloe vera and sage. Thank you Sarah Jane! Â Next week, we are going to go into the school garden to find natural ingredients that will help Molly recover.
P5 learn about forces
Our STEM topic has been learning all about forces. First we learned about friction. Then we investigated another type of friction: air resistance. We also investigated electrostatic forces. We learned how to write up a science experiment as a real scientist would!
