The first thing we did at Pumphie Pals was to identify which jobs and careers require skills and knowledge for each of the STEM areas.
Then we used information from British Science Week to have our own paper planes competition.

Mr Fish the Fireman came to visit the PM children and show them all the things that he has on his uniform. He talked about his helmet and uniform and how they keep him safe from the heat of the fire, he showed us his visor to protect his eyes. He lots of thing to help on his uniform. He has a whistle to be found in building, he has a torch to see. His boots are special in the way that they are made of strong material to keep his feet safe from anything that could fall on them.
The AM children had a visit from PC Manderson and his colleague to tell us about their job as police officers. They talked about all the things that they do as officers and explained about all the equipment they have on their uniforms. They let us try on their hats and when they left they put on the blue light and the siren on the police car for us.
This week the children participated in a STEM design challenge to create a sundial from readily available resources. Each member of the group had a specific role to play e.g. recorder, quality checker, team representative or resource manager to ensure that everyone played a part in the process. Groups had the opportunity to browse the available resources and then discussed their ideas of how to create their sundials. They then created their sundials before presenting them to the rest of the class, stating how they came up with their ideas, how the sundials would work and also discussing what they would do differently if they had to build them again. The children asked Miss Burton to judge their finished sundials. They answered questions based on the success criteria to help her to decide.
As part of our STEM focus, Primary 2S have been learning all about different illnesses and medicines this week, how to stay safe around medicines and what makes us feel better when we are ill.
Molly, the P3 class puppet is visiting us and she is poorly. We worked together to diagnose Molly, checking her symptoms against different illnesses and have worked out that she has flu!
Sarah Jane visited the class yesterday to tell us all about natural medicines that can be found in plants and the different ways they can help us feel better when we are poorly. We learned about the benefits of willow tree, ginger, garlic, aloe vera and sage. Thank you Sarah Jane! Â Next week, we are going to go into the school garden to find natural ingredients that will help Molly recover.
Our STEM topic has been learning all about forces. First we learned about friction. Then we investigated another type of friction: air resistance. We also investigated electrostatic forces. We learned how to write up a science experiment as a real scientist would!
