Primary 4

L.I.  To write a poem.

S.C.  I can write an original poem, using Roald Dahl’s work as a model.

As part of our book study of George’s Marvellous Medicine by Roald Dahl, the children have been comparing and contrasting poems by Roald Dahl and William Shakespeare.  They analysed the poems to look for alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition and rhyming patterns, and colour coded each in order to compare and contrast.   Then, using Roald Dahl’s work as a model, they applied the literacy skills they had explored to create their own original poetry.

The children also had fun dressing up for the occasion.

Comparing and contrasting poetry. Creating original poems.

Book Week Scotland in P6

Primary 6 are doing an author study on Michael Morpurgo this term. For book week we enjoyed reading a variety of short stories by Michael Morpurgo, including ‘Rainbow Bear’, ‘My Father is a Polar Bear’ and ‘The Dancing Bear’. We discussed the language used to describe the bear in each of these stories, including his use of alliteration. Inspired by this, we wrote our own animal descriptions using alliteration and wow words.

Primary 6 have also started the First Minister’s Reading Challenge. During Book Week, we set ourselves reading targets as part of the challenge. We will be updating our reading passports regularly with reviews on each book we read.

On Friday, we dressed up as a character from one of our favourite stories. It was great fun seeing everyone (including Miss Cave) in their costumes!

Book Week Scotland – Primary 1

P1 have really enjoyed exploring the three books from their P1 Book Bags over the last few weeks.

We have focused on the different emotions the characters have shown in the book.  In ‘Eric makes a Splash’, the character is a real worrier and we explored his face expressions and how his voice might sound.  We used an app called Chatterkid on the Ipads to show this.

PUSCPS Celebrates Book Week Scotland

Today we had a Book Week Scotland Assembly to celebrate our learning on the lead up to Book Week Scotland.

Miss Burton read us a passage from The Truth Pixie by Matt Haig, as this is book she enjoys reading.

We looked at some of the photos that children had sent in of them reading in an unusual place.  Well done to everyone who sent in a photo!

We watched a video in which children from each class shared what they had been learning in class.

We also dressed up as a book character!

We also celebrated our Living our Values children (and adults).

Book Week at Nursery

During book week at nursery we have been listening to stories that our adults enjoy.  Mrs Hamill read “The Elves and the Shoemaker”,  this was a story she enjoyed when she was a little girl.  Miss Young picked “The Bears and the Fireworks” from the nursery library as a book she enjoys.  Mrs Arthur chose a book from the nursery  library that  she has loved telling over the years to lots of children called “Little Blue Car” and Mrs Montgomery read “Where the Wild Things Are”. This was a book her children enjoyed when they were young. Over the week we talked about our favorite stories and we decided that the “GRUFFALO” was one of our most favorite books.

We enjoy reading stories everyday at nursery.

Reading from an early age helps children with literacy skill all the way through school. A good idea is to read a story at bedtime as part of the children’s bedtime routine.

P2S Book Week

This week Primary 2S received their Read, Write, Count bags to take home. Each bag contained 2 books, snakes and ladders and finger puppets!

In class, we read one of our Read, Write, Count books,  A Tale of Two Beasts by Fiona Roberton.  In the story there are lots of things that the beast isn’t happy about – we shared our ideas then wrote about a day out that the beast would love and one that he would hate!

P5 celebrate book week

We have enjoyed reading ‘Wonder’ by R J Palacio. We have done a variety of activities to allow us to develop our emotional vocabulary. We developed our skills in ‘hot seating’ in drama where we had to become the characters from the novel.
