This week we had a really  good day at the science and technology day at Broxburn Academy.

In maths we were multiplying a decimal by a decimal using a strategy.

In P.E we were playing badminton with our partners and playing around the world. The girls were playing against Josh and the boys were playing against Ella.

On Wednesday we were learning about peer support with Mr Eagleson.

In Art we planned what we would do for our Christmas art activity and we also planned how we wanted to display our topic work.

This week was our class assembly was about WW2  , we all participated in it and we all did a fabulous job. Before we did our assembly we all made gas masks  and pin wheel poppies to wear for our assembly. Then for all the children on stage we made name tags.

We also wrote an imaginative story about a scarecrow who wanted to be real. Our main focus was describing the character and setting the scene. In maths we worked on dividing decimals by a single digit.

On Thursday we had badminton with Mrs Mooney and we played a really fast game of around the world. Surprisingly our top winner was Ella Watson, unfortunately Mrs  Mooney  didn’t win but she tried her best.

Thank you

This week the children have been learning simple Spanish phrases in order to create a short play script.  They have been working with a partner to create it in English and then try it in Spanish using a vocabulary list that they have learned.

The children have been creating comparison posters to compare aspects of life during WWII to the present day.

In maths we have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10,100 or 1000 and using rounding to estimate the answers to calculations.  In PE we have been playing invasion games.  The children have been giving their opinion about what works best in the invasion games and we have adjusted how we play the game as a result.  They are much happier with the new format of the game.

We have also been learning about WWII and enjoyed a handling session from Mrs Liddell.  The session gave a detailed account of events during the war.  It was presented in a way that made links to Mrs Liddell’s relatives, who experienced the war, and made links to local areas which made it more meaningful for the children.  They also had the opportunity to try on some of the clothing.

This week we have learned about how plants benefit society with Miss Hamilton.  We learned that they can be used for food, shelter, medicine and that they provide oxygen.  Today we learned about the use of fertilisers.  First we discussed how plants grow then we planted seeds so that we could carry out an experiment to find out if the fertiliser makes the plants grow faster.  In three weeks we will measure the plants to find out if the fertiliser makes the plant grow taller than the one with no fertiliser.

P7’s also went to the West Lothian Primary Schools’ Track and Field Championships 2016.  Ben came third in the Shot Putt event.  Well done to all who took part.

The art of Chinese paper cutting has been prized for many thousands of years. Paper cuts are used for decoration, given as gifts, and are regarded as lucky. Traditional paper cuts often showed celebrations, weddings and feasts, but now all sorts of motifs are used. The children in P7 have been using their line drawing and cutting skills to create Chinese Paper Cut artwork. Here are some of their designs.

This week we have been working on fractions of a quantity and equivalent fractions.

In French, the children have been completing a crossword based on French words associated with families.

In Science, the children have been working in groups on their new animal discovery. The children explored and discussed animal adaptation cards to discover how animals have adapted to suit their environment.   They were then given the task to create a new species of animal that has adapted to suit the local/school environment.

In P.E. this week the children enjoyed learning ball skills in Futsal.

Well done to Cameron, Victor and Paul who were our finalists in the Scots poetry recitals. Congratulations to Paul who was chosen to recite the poem at our Scots assembly.

This term we have been learning about WWII. The children have researched information about key events in WWII to complete a class scrapbook as well as researching leaders involved with WWII as a homework task to be shared with their peers. Key events were also explored in order to compare and contrast the impact on individuals and families during WWII with present day living.

On the last day of term the children received a presentation about the Holocaust from Lucia and Lewis from St Margaret’s Academy in Livingston. Lucia and Lewis have recently returned from a trip to Krakow as part of the Lessons from Auschwitz Project. They were selected by their school to attend the one day trip which is run by the Holocaust Educational Trust. As part of their next steps towards becoming Lessons from Auschwitz Ambassadors, they have delivered their presentation to several P7 classes at St Margaret’s Academy, our own P7 class and will continue to present to other P7 classes. The children were a super audience who were really engaged in the presentation and asked lots of questions to deepen their understanding of the Holocaust.
