Primary 4 Art

Primary 4 have been using line, shape and colour to create abstract art.  In our most recent pieces of work, the children had to draw a vase of flowers and draw lines through it.  They then used hot colours for the vase and cold colours for the background.  Here are the finished pieces of work.  I have also included some artwork created at home for display in the classroom.

Primary 4 STEM Learning

Our STEM topic has had a focus on space linking to maths within daily life, seasons, time, day and night.   In Writing the pupils wrote instructions for how to make a paper plate sundial including a title, goal, materials and steps.  To check if they had written a successful set of instructions the children then created the paper plate sundials by following instructions that were written by someone else rather than their own.  They were then able to give feedback on what went well and what could be improved by peer assessing using the peer assessment placemats in order to link their feedback to the success criteria.

Finally, the children participated in the ‘Let’s Make a Sundial’ challenge to design and create a sundial using readily available resources. 

Primary 4

Primary 4 have been learning to tell the time using analogue and digital clocks, recording 12hr times using am and pm and identifying 24hr notation.  They have also been using an empty number line to help them to calculate time durations to solve problems.

 

Primary 4 – Internet Safety Week

I can discuss my online identity and how I present myself online.

As part of Internet Safety week, P4 explored who they are online.  This included through profile pictures they have chosen, usernames, or the characters or avatars they like to use in games and how they choose what these look like.

Pupils completed an identity wheel to record how they represent themselves online without using their names.   The wheels were then shuffled and redistributed to allow pupils to explore how safe each method was.

Primary 4 Scots Focus

For our Scots topic, Primary 4 have been discussing Scots vocabulary when learning poems for their Burns assembly.  They have been learning Scottish Country Dancing as well as Scots songs for assembly and those sung at a Burns celebration.  They discussed the life of Robert Burns and how he wrote about his experiences in his poetry.  They also explored different types of food produced in specific areas of Scotland and have used these to prepare a Scottish themed menu.  Finally, they used ICT to create their menus.

Primary 4

For Maths Week we have been learning about area.  The children have been learning to count squares and parts of squares to find the area of a 2d shape.  Pupils then drew a plan of a Celtic roundhouse onto squared paper and counted the squares to find the area, before adding more of the internal details to their plan.

We were also lucky enough to have a visit from Sarah-Jane who came in to talk to the children about her experience of excavating a Celtic roundhouse.  The children were able to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of The Celts during discussions with Sarah-Jane and were also able to ask questions.  They had the opportunity to look at photographs of excavations and explore the different types of materials and artefacts that would have been found.

Primary 4

On Friday, during together time, a group of children decided that they would create a club of their own called the Creativity Club.  They created a chant for their club and performed it together.  They also thought about sustainability and decided to create pictures using pencil shavings from sharpened pencils based on an activity that had been done at a group attended by one of the children.  The boys decided to draw pictures of aliens.

Primary 4 Class Charter

In Primary 4 the children explored the Rights of Children and considered which ones were more relevant to a classroom environment to include in our class charter.  They also reflected on our school rules of Ready, Respectful and Safe in order to generate ideas for what the pupils would agree to do and what the adults should do to ensure that everyone’s rights were met.  The pupils contributed ideas for how the charter would be displayed, then a vote was held to vote for their favourite idea.  The idea with the most votes was a rocket with astronauts.  However, we still had a problem with how to display their names.  Fortunately, they quickly came up with the idea that the astronauts could have flags with their names on them, like the ones used on moon landings.
