Primary 3 Science

This week, Primary 3 have been learning about germs and diseases. We are investigating how germs can spread and grow on different surfaces by conducting an experiment with a potato.

We cut the potato into 4 slices and put the first slice in a plastic bag. This is our control slice to see how a potato would decay normally. We then rubbed the other slices on different surfaces before putting them into bags to see which would result in the most bacteria growing.  Our slices were then labelled and placed in a cupboard. We will have to wait until next week to find out the results.

Primary 3 Class Charter

Primary 3 have been learning about children’s rights. They worked together to create a class charter with a list of rules that they all agree to follow to make sure everyone in the class has the right to learn, to be listened to and to be safe.  To sign up to their charter, the class also created their own super pupils who will help everyone to learn and enjoy school.

Primary 6 First Aid Training

Primary 6 had a fantastic time learning First Aid last week! Our instructor, Stefan, taught us what to do to assist a casualty, including how to put them into a recovery position and to perform CPR. We also learned how to apply bandages for different wounds and what to do if someone was choking. Everyone did a great job when practising these skills on the dummies and on each other!

This week in writing, we have been using what we learned to write instructions on how to approach and help a casualty.

Roots of Empathy in Primary 6

This week was our last Roots of Empathy session. We had a final visit from baby Alfie and his mum and we all received certificates as recognition of our learning achievements over the course of the programme. We also presented Alfie with letters and wishes for the future that we had written for him to read when he is older. We have really enjoyed watching him develop and grow and we have learned so much about caring for a baby.

In Science, we have been learning about buoyancy. We tested a number of different materials to see how well they floated. We discovered that the buoyancy of an object depends on its shape, weight and density, along with the depth of the water.

Primary 6 Digital Learning Week

As part of Digital Learning Week, P6 have been developing their coding skills using a coding website called Scratch. We wrote code for multiple ‘sprites’ to create an animation for Digital Learning Week. Using code, we were able to make the sprites change position, colour, size and shape as well as make sounds and add speech bubbles.

You can view examples of our coding work below.

On Wednesday we had a visit from a DevOps Engineer at CloudReach. He told us about his job, the skills he uses in his work and possible routes into a job such as his. Many of us were inspired to think about computer engineering as a possible future career.

Yesterday, we enjoyed sharing what we had learned on Scratch with our parents. We also planned our slideshows to present our learning within Science on the water cycle in a digital form.

Primary 6

As part of our Roots of Empathy work, Primary 6 have been learning about how to keep a baby safe at home.

Here are some of the rules we learned for keeping babies safe as they become more mobile.

1. Always supervise your baby.
2. Keep babies away from the oven.
3. Keep sharp objects out of reach.
4. Never leave a charger plugged in around a baby.
5. Always keep babies away from fireplaces.
6. Always keep bleach and other cleaning products locked away from babies.
7. Never leave a baby alone in the bath.
8. Always cover up sockets.
9. Always use stair gates.
10. Always check the floor for choking hazards.

We are looking forward to our visit from Baby Alfie on Thursday to find out more about his progress.

Primary 6 Scots Focus

As part of our Scottish focus, P6 studied the poems of Robert Burns. We completed an analysis of ‘A Red, Red Rose’ and used this to inspire us to write our own poems. We also practised reciting poems by Robert Burns for our homework. Well done to Owen and Murron for their fantastic recitals at our Scots Assembly!

Within Social Studies, we have been looking at the work of Scottish inventors. So far we have been using our research skills to find out about the work of Sir Alexander Fleming, John Logie Baird, Alexander Graham Bell and Sir Robert Watson-Watt.

Primary 6

This week in Science, Primary 6 have been learning all about energy. We discovered that energy can take different forms like chemical, light or heat and can transfer from one object to another. We worked together to match objects and actions to the type of energy they hold or produce.

In Maths, we have been applying our numeracy skills to complete word problems. We have been looking at two-step problems, where we need to complete two different calculations in order to find the answer.

We are looking forward to our class trip on Wednesday to the Water of Leith Centre to discover more about the Jacobites!

Primary 6

As part of our Jacobites topic, Primary 6 have been learning about the equipment used by a Jacobite soldier in battle. We used our research skills to find information online and then worked in pairs to create a poster with drawings and facts about the items we had found.

We were surprised to find out that a Jacobite’s Claymore sword would have been almost 5 feet long!

Our next step is to design and create a model of a Jacobite shield or targe.

In Maths this week, we have been learning how to tell the time. We have been looking at how to convert between digital and analogue times and between 12 hour and 24 hour times.

Primary 6

As part of our community fortnight, Primary 6 have been looking at the value ‘Support’. We talked about a time that we have been supported or supported others and we wrote down a list of ways that we can support each other in school.  These included: helping each other with our learning, comforting others when they are sad and treating everyone with respect.

We have also been working on forming our class charter. We looked at the articles from the UNCRC in groups and chose the rights that we thought were most relevant to our class.  We then voted as a whole class to base our charter on the four rights below.

Article 28 – We have the right to an education.

Article 19 – We have the right to be safe and protected.

Article 13 – We have the right to find out information and express ourselves.

Article 14 – We have the right to choose our own religion and beliefs.

We worked together to list positive actions that we should do to ensure that everyone has these rights in our classroom.
