Primary 2

The children had a fabulous Red Nose Day on Friday and enjoyed the activities.  Miss Miller tested the children on spelling their common words and Miss Brennan and Miss Vermeulen worked together to teach the children how to make Red Nose Day bookmarks.

This week the children have been keen to spell out their common words so that they can improve on their previous score to move their arrow on our class target board.  In Maths they have been working on doubles and have played domino and playing card games to help them to remember their doubles facts.  They have also been exploring the similarities and differences between adult and baby animals and talked about how we can tell which family a baby animal is from.  Some of the baby animals were quite tricky to identify but children made links to books they had looked at in our class library and used this to identify the adult animal. The children were also very keen to talk about who they thought they looked most like in their family and why.  In Literacy this week the children wrote acrostic poems about Spring.  They discussed what an acrostic poem is and gave lots of ideas for words associated with Spring for use in their poems. DSCN1626

Primary 1

In Maths this week, Primary 1 have been learning how to order numbers within 20 from smallest to largest and largest to smallest. We have also been practising adding and our double number facts.

We learned how to write stories in writing this week. We had to choose our own character for the story and described what happened to them. They were very imaginative!

After our walk to the Post Office last Monday, we drew a map in class to show the route we took. We had to remember all the things we passed along the way and make sure that we drew it from a bird’s eye view. We used the photographs taken on our walk to help us. Our next challenge is to make a 3D model of the route!

Primary 1

This week Primary 1 and 1/2 went on a walk to the Post Office. We posted a letter to Postman Pat and learned about what happens to a letter at the Post Office. We bought a stamp for our letter and saw the scales that are used to weigh letters and parcels. We also saw big sacks at the back of the Post office where letters go so that they can be taken to the sorting office later.

In Art this week, we have been learning how to create observational drawings. We had to look carefully at the shape and lines of pieces of fruit and vegetables to draw them in detail. We can’t wait to practise our drawing skills again next week!

Primary 1

This week Primary 1 have been learning about capacity. We practised filling up bottles to different levels and described how full or empty various containers were.

On Thursday it was Chinese New Year and we learnt about the different ways people in China celebrate. In writing, we wrote a description of what happened in the story of Chinese New Year.

In PE, we have been learning how to use bats and rackets to hit a ball back to our partner. We had to practise our aim and keep our eye on the ball. We are looking forward to playing more games to improve our skills next week.

Primary 1

As part of our Scots week, Primary 1 have been exploring Scottish stories and singing Scottish songs.

We read ‘Katie Morag and the Tiresome Ted’ and used the book to inspire our learning this week.  We had lots of fun taking on the role of Katie Morag in Drama, showing her behaviour and emotions in different parts of the story.  When Katie Morag’s teddy got tossed into the sea we used our writing skills to create a poster to help find him for her. Today in Art we had to look carefully at the illustrations of Katie Morag’s island to create a stormy sea picture. We had to mix lots of different colours of paint and use wavy brush strokes to make the dark sky and choppy waves.

In Maths, we have been using counters and other objects to find different ways of making 3, 4 and 5. We managed to write sums to match the number facts we found.

Primary 1

This week we really enjoyed learning all about electricity. We made posters to show how to stay safe when we are using it.

In Social Studies, we have been learning all about how to care for animals and the local environment.  We watched a video clip about hedgehogs and used the information we heard to write facts about them. We know that hedgehogs hunt for food when it’s dark and that they are good climbers.  They really like slugs and worms. In the winter, when there is less food around, they need to hibernate.

After learning about the jobs that vets do, we set up an animal hospital in our roleplay area. Here are some of the things we said about playing there:

Ava F: ‘It’s the best thing I’ve played with!’

Calum: ‘I really, really, really love it!’

Ellie C : ‘I like taking x-rays.’

Aaron: ‘I like putting the animals in their beds for a sleep.’

Ava B: ‘I like giving a dog medicine.’

Primary 1

This week Primary 1 have been learning how to tell the time. We can show and read o’clock times and next week we will be learning to read half past times.

In phonics, we learned ‘v’ and ‘w’ and practised building words with these sounds.

Today we wrote spooky stories for Halloween. We had to close our eyes and imagine that we had walked into a spooky house, then we drew and wrote about what we had seen inside.

Primary 4

This week Primary 4 learnt how to find the area of a shape within Maths. We talked about when we might use this skill in later life and came up with examples such as buying and fitting a carpet or working out whether you have enough space for a new piece of furniture. Can you work out the area of the shapes below by counting the squares or multiplying the length by the breadth?

Primary 4

It has been a short week but Primary 4 have still been very busy.

Demi: This week I enjoyed playing tennis in P.E. I learned how to a forehand shot. You need to get the racket and hit the ball from low to high.

Shannon: I enjoyed learning about the water cycle because I didn’t know that water was used over and over again.

Joshua: I liked Science this week because I learned that water can turn into a gas when you make it hot.

Ella: I enjoyed Science because I didn’t know that we are probably still drinking the same water as the dinosaurs did.

Hannah: I enjoyed PE with Ms Pender because I learned how jump far.

Rory: I enjoyed doing Maths this week because I like learning about fractions. I learnt what a tenth was.

Courtney: I enjoyed doing Maths this week and learning about tenths, thirds and fifths.

Lydia: I liked when we were doing skipping because it was fun to get out and about in the fresh air.

Callum: I enjoyed the sponsored skip because it was a lot of fun and it gave me lots of energy.

We are all looking forward to getting started on our new interdisciplinary topic next week!

Primary 4

This week Primary 4 really enjoyed learning about life in Uganda at assembly from our special visitors, Mr and Mrs Comrie. We learnt that people in Uganda need mosquito needs to keep them safe from Malaria and we were surprised to hear that many of the things we take for granted here, like pencils, are difficult for schools over there to get.

In Maths this week we have been learning about fractions. We know that 1/2 is the same as 2/4 and we can use our division skills to help us find a 1/3 and 1/5 of a number.

We have also been learning about alliteration. We identified the use of alliteration in poems and then used this knowledge to write our own.  We will post some examples of our alliterative poems soon!
