Primary 2/1

This week, Primary 2/1 were learning about symmetry.

On investigation, we learned that symmetry was like a ‘fold’ and that both parts of a shape/pattern/object had to match each other. We also learned that symmetry is an important part of nature as lots of insects have symmetrical bodies/patterns.

We took part in play-based activities linked to symmetry and created our own symmetrical ladybirds.

Primary 2/1

Just a short message to say ‘thank you’ to all the parents/carers and family members who came to the ‘Wriggly Nativity’ performances on Thursday. We really appreciate you taking the time to come and support us.

We were thrilled with how both performances went – the time and effort that children have put in is really something. It has been one of the best nativities I’ve seen/done in my twelve years!

Primary 2/1

This week, Primary 2/1 were writing to persuade.

We have been learning about exposition writing, where we are trying to persuade someone our point of view is right. As we had made/decorated beautiful Christmas biscuits for the Fayre last week, we decided to write in order to persuade people to buy them (many thanks to those of you who purchased biscuits from our stall!).

We also took part in some play-based activities linked to our writing theme:

  • we watched/listened to the story of ‘The Gingerbread Man’
  • we used construction materials to build a trap to catch the Gingerbread Man
  • we made our own gingerbread designs using different craft materials.

A reminder that the performances of ‘Wriggly Nativity’ will take place on Thursday 14th December at 9.30am and 2.00pm. We hope to see you there!

Primary 2/1

This week, Primary 2/1 have been making preparations for ‘Wriggly Nativity’!

Primary 1 parts have now been allocated and costumes fitted (there is no need for parents/carers to provide costumes). Primary 2 will form the choir for this year’s performance.

Nativity performances will take place on Thursday 14th December at 9.30am and 2.00pm. More information about these performances will follow in due course.

Primary 2/1

This week, Primary 2/1 have been participating in block play.

Below, you can see some of the creations different groups came up with. They made designs using wooden blocks, natural materials and small world items.

Primary 2/1

On Friday, Primary 2/1 brought home their ‘Wonderful Week of Learning’ jotters. These jotters are used each term to show what learning looks like across a week.

We would love it if you could take some time to look at your child’s learning and talk to them about it. I am also happy if you would like to leave comments/sticky notes on certain pieces of work. Primary 2/1 have been working so hard and it would be lovely to see what you think!

‘Wonderful Week of Learning’ jotters should be returned to school at some point next week.

Also, a massive ‘thank you’ to all of the parents, carers and friends who came to our reading events on Thursday/Friday. We really appreciate you taking the time to support your child.

I especially loved the efforts from Team Manson for our ‘create a bear’ challenge and couldn’t resist sharing a picture of their work!

Primary 2/1

This week, Primary 2/1 participated in money-based challenges linked to ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’.

We:

  • Practised making given amounts using concrete materials (Circles were building amounts to £1 using 10p and 1p coins; Squares were building amounts to 10 using Numicon pieces).
  • Participated in shop role-play to practise buying the items George wanted.
  • Designed/priced our own clothing items to sell in the ‘shop’.
  • Did coin rubbing activities with crayons and paper.

We are still awaiting more clues to find out who our mystery mail-person is!

Primary 2/1

This week, Primary 2/1 received some unexpected mail!

We had been sent a story (‘The Smartest Giant in Town’) and some challenges to go alongside it. The letters were signed with ‘G’ and a footprint. We are starting to make predictions about who the mysterious ‘G’ might be but are hoping we receive some more clues to help us!

We listened to ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ and participated in play-based challenges linked to the story.

We:

  • Wrote ‘thank you’ letters to George the giant in the role of one of the animals.
  • Designed a new outfit for George to wear.
  • Used construction to build models of the town from the story.
  • Used figures/puppets to retell the story.

Primary 2/1

Primary 2/1 recently completed their first topic, ‘Welcome to School!’. The photo above shows a record of our learning journey.

Through this topic we:

  • Considered what Harry the bear would need to know for starting school and used this as our plan.
  • Made Harry a check-in symbol so he could share how he was feeling.
  • Made Harry feel supported/welcome by building him a home, preparing his packed lunch and reading him stories.
  • Drew and labelled what Harry would need for school in his backpack.
  • Modelled behaviours for Harry such as how we sit on the carpet and how we line up for break/lunch.
  • Considered what we thought made a good friend to help Harry form friendships.
  • Photographed signs/symbols in the school environment which gave us information.
  • Photographed key areas in the school which Harry would need to use.
  • Made a map of the school and linked key areas with their photographs.
  • Identified key adults in the school and added them to the map.
  • Learned a song to help us remember the days of the week.
  • Learned how timetables are used and made Harry his own daily timetable.
  • Built models of our classroom using construction materials.
  • Learned about a ‘birds-eye’ view and looked at maps of our local area.
  • Used photographs of our classroom models to make our own maps.
  • Learned how to give/follow directions using the language ‘forwards’, ‘backwards’, ‘left’ and ‘right’.

This week, Primary 2/1 will be issued with home readers.

Please check Seesaw regularly for details of home readers/any associated tasks. We would also love to know about any other reading at home, so feel free to share this on Seesaw!
