November Newsletter

Dear Parent/Carer

It was very encouraging to see so many parents at parent’s night. The children were all keen to know what was going to be said about them and I hope there were no surprises when parents discussed what the outcomes were. Every child, it is hoped, will know how they are progressing in their learning and be able to discuss the targets they have set themselves in conjunction with their teachers. It is extremely important that children know what the next steps in their learning are to enable them to challenge themselves and make progress. It is also very encouraging to know that some pupils have gained a bronze award in their personal achievements through the I-Achieve process. It is equally important that as well as attainment in school outside achievements are recognised, please encourage your children to record these and be recognised for them.

Primary 6 and Primary 7 children had a very successful residential to Loch Inch with many children overcoming fears and reservations to take part in skiing lessons and sailing activities. Every member of staff, with the children, said how proud they were that everyone demonstrated a ‘have a go’ attitude. Well done to all the children who gave of their very best.

The children across all stages  are presently looking at Mid Calder as their IDL and it is with great anticipation I look forward to the open afternoon to not only share your child’s learning but to celebrate 40 years of Mid Calder Primary School. We look forward to welcoming you into school on the 22nd of November from 1.30pm. Specific details will be sent out nearer the time but it is hoped you will put this date in your diary.

Please look on our school blog for our diary dates for the rest of this term.

P4’s Amazing Dinosaur Assembly!

Primary 4 enjoyed presenting their Dinosaur Assembly today and had lots of fun sharing their learning from last term!

The boys and girls enjoyed:

  • Learning scripts and adding their own special touch to them!
  • Taking on different roles like dinosaurs and explorers.
  • Sharing facts with the audience.
  • Showing the audience how to sort dinosaurs into carnivores, herbivores and omnivores using a Venn diagram.
  • Talking about the different stages of the fossilization process.
  • Sharing their stories about ‘A dinosaur in my classroom!’.
  • Managing ICT equipment by becoming Technical Troopers.

Well done Primary 4 for bringing dinosaurs back to life!

PSA Halloween Disco

A big thank you to our PSA for organising such a fun and creative Halloween Party. Two of our house and vice captions attended a PSA to discuss what the pupils would like at the Disco and the PSA used this information to plan our exciting parties. Thank you to all the pupils, parents and staff who attended the discos.

Nathan’s Grannie Lends a Brown Owl Hand!

Twit-twhoooooooo Christmas card pow-wow!
Nathan’s Gran, a former Brown Owl, dusted off her feathers and came into P4 to help the class prepare hand-crafted Christmas cards to fund raise on Parents Afternoon and Evening. The children had already made small paintings in the style of Alice Druitt at Gingerpaws card designs as an Art lesson and these were carefully double and triple-mounted to make roll cards with special inserts and made-by stickers.
The children all got to die-cut precise circles from their artworks to mount onto their cards. They hope that you will pay £2.00 for a unique card that will fit a standard 6 by 6 envelope. Have a look when you visit for your appointment on Wednesday and see what creative crafters we have at Mid Calder. More classes to create special one-off  cards for sale soon.
Other children will be able to make Christmas cards from P3-7 in the Wednesday Get Crafty After School Club 3.15-4 p.m. Sign up soon as there is only 12 places.
Any crafty parent helpers will be most welcome.

Many thanks in advance,

Miss Brolls

Mr T.Rex Visits Mid Calder

Today Primary 3, Primary 4 and Primary 2 had a very special visitor, Mr T. Rex. At the beginning of their Dinosaurs IDL context, Mr Rex wrote each class a letter asking for their help, as he believed that the people were forgetting about the dinosaurs. He challenged P2, P3 and P4 to set up a Mid Calder Museum to teach other pupils and keep the memory of dinosaurs alive, and we enthusiastically accepted this request.

This week, we held our museums and shared our new knowledge and skills with Primary 1 and Primary 7. We loved showcasing our learning and we felt that we definitely helped Mr T. Rex. We were extremely excited to meet the man himself and asked him lots of relevant questions about his job and his experience of finding fossils. He was able to teach us lots of new and interesting facts about palaeontology and different dinosaurs.

A colossal thank you to Mr T. Rex for coming to visit. What an end to a very exciting week, and a fantastic IDL context. We have loved journeying back to the land before time to stop the memory of dinosaurs from becoming extinct.

Term 1 Celebration Assembly

This morning, we welcomed parents and friends along to our first Celebration Assembly of the 2017-18 session. We acknowledged the success of pupils from across the school and nursery with out STEM Super Star and, in line with our School Improvement Plan, our new Successful Speller Award. One member of each of the 6 groups from our recent Loch Insh residential were also presented with an award.

We announced the Top Scorers for each house and a big well done to Cunnigar who won the House Cup for the term.
