We launched our new approach to achievement last week at Meet the Teacher. Each child now has a copy of their iAchieve level (you can download these below) and this is used to tracked their achievements. When they have achieved three of the tasks in each box they will receive a certificate in class or at a Friday Assembly and move on to the next area within their level, for example if they complete Brilliant Bronze for Responsible Citizen they will move on to Super Silver.
If the achievement has been completed at home the pupil can fill out an iAchieve sheet (found below) which are available from their class teacher. Primary 4 to 6 have the option of using their iAchieve blog (the link to these blogs are above and pupils will require their Glow password as these blogs are private) and Primary 7 can use Didbook, to record their achievements.
Our Achievement Assemblies will now be Celebration Assemblies, these will celebration our achievements for that term and pupils will be presented with a Literacy and STEM Award as nominated by their class teacher. The parents/ carers of that pupil will be invited along to the assembly.
On Thursday we held our annual Meet the Teacher event. This was an opportunity for parents and carers to find out what our school priorities are for the year, meet their child/ren’s teacher and find out about their learning. Thank you to everyone who attended this event, and to the house ad vice captains for helping out. If you were unable to attend the presentations and learning letters will be available in the blog.
Feedback from the event included:

Dear Parent/Carer
We have had a very good start to the new term and the children seem very settled in their new classes. The new Primary 1 children have already conquered the school routine for coming in with Mrs Smith and Mrs George having lovely quiet classes to begin the day. The new staff members, including myself, are getting to know the school, the children and each other. I feel it is of extreme importance that we all work together, get to know each other as a school community and build upon the previous good work that has been achieved in our school. I do look forward to meeting parents at our ‘meet the teacher’ evening and hope that we will build strong links to ensure our children are at the forefront of everything we do.
The children have been looking at the school values, with each class taking one value and looking closely at what it means for us in our school. They will present to each other at our assembly this week so everyone will be aware of what the values mean to the children and staff and that these are the values we will live and learn by.
I have high expectations of what I believe our children can achieve and having spent a lot of time in classes over the first few days I believe the children have high aspirations of what they can achieve. I thought I would share a poem with you and maybe you can help them on the way.                                                                                                                                                         Mary McKenzie
A Child
You have many talents,
of that I am sure.
Your dreams are beautiful,
innocent and pure.
Use your imagination,
to learn and explore.
Just like a bird,
you’ll be able to soar.
You’re still very young,
and some have much ahead.
Your love for life
may you joyously spread.
The paths that you choose,
I’ll support and believe.
If you commit in your mind,
you shall definitely achieve
Remember to smile,
each morning and day.
Feed your mind with books,
and body through play.
Don’t pay attention,
to trends or mere fashions.
Use your heart and imagination,
to follow dreams and your passions.
During our Building Our Community each stage had a different value to think about. On Froday at assembly they presented their value to the school community. We had songs, raps, videos and presentations.
On Friday we held our annual House Captain Election. The presentations this year were of a very high standard and all P7s worked very hard to put together their manifestos under strict time limits. A big well done to all the Primary 7s who ran for election and congratulations to our new House and Vice Captains.

Every year West Lothian Council holds a ‘Class of …’ so Head Teachers can share interesting and new practice and they can find out about what’s new in education. On Friday Mrs McKenzie was invited along to Class of 2016 to share how we use ICT to support our learning and teaching at Mid Calder Primary. You can view the video below.
Today the Magical Mediators were invited to attend the Young Talks Conference at Dundee University organised by the Scottish Mediation Network.
We listened to presentations from Tam Baillie (The Children and Young People’s Commissioner in Scotland), Nick Patel (a Mediation Magician) and from people who have a full time career in Mediation. We also attended two different workshops.
We were one of two schools who were asked to share our peer mediation journey. Keira, Anna, Sean and Caitlin presented at the school’s showcase to over 100 participants.
We took part in a Skype video chat with a school in America, it was interesting to see how peer mediation operates in another country. We also watched a video about peer mediation in Scotland and it was lovely to see our P7 peer mediators from last year.
The biggest surprise of all was when we received the award for our Outstanding Contribution to Peer Mediation in Scotland by a School and the prize of a free mediation training session from Jeremy Scuse (the managing director at Catalyst Mediation Ltd).
We our so proud of our Magical Mediators, both from last session and this session and all their achievements – congratulations!
