P2 Open Afternoon

This week, Primary 2 threw open their shop doors, and invited family and friends to come and buy!

As part of our Mid Calder IDL topic  we have been exploring the different shops that exist in Mid Calder. We learnt about the different types of goods and services available. We investigated and discussed matters such as signs and logos, opening and closing times and the range and cost of items for sale.

We then decided to work together in pairs or in small groups to create our own shop especially for the Open Afternoon. We made a plan and then set about making the signs to provide information for our customers and the goods that we wanted to sell. We made some winter themed cards in two different sizes.

When the doors opened, business was brisk, and soon our customers were buying big cards for 20p and small cards for 10p.  We  calculated total costs and worked out how much change to give back to customers.

Finally, the customers helped with a little bit of Market Research by sharing some ideas about what new kind of sweet they might like to see for sale in the future.

Thank you to everyone who came along and joined in with our activities.

Mid Calder 40th Anniversary Open Afternoon

This term every class have had a focus on Mid Calder for their Interdisciplinary Learning context for learning. Classes have investigated different aspects of Mid Calder from its location to its history, shops to services provided in our area. Thank you to everyone who came along to help us celebrate.

Money

This week Primary 2 have been working very hard learning about Money as part of their IDL Topic.

LI We are learning to use different coins to pay an exact amount

SC I can read the cost of an item

I can choose the coins I need to pay for it

First, we looked at all the coins very carefully and practised recognising and sorting them by putting them into different money banks.

Next we looked at the cost of items in the toy shop, and discussed which coins we could use to pay for it. We discovered that there were different ways of making the same amount. Soon, we were trying to make the exact amount using the fewest number of coins.

Perhaps we will be able to use our skills at home too, by using coins to pay for some items next time we go shopping.

Mrs Smith would love to hear how we get on!

West Lothian Maths Contest on Sumdog

P1-7 have been entered to take part in Sumdog’s West Lothian Maths Contest. This runs from 10-16th November and can be played at both home and at school using the Sumdog website or app. All pupils should have their Sumdog log in their homework diary/ book.

The children have to answer 1000 questions and their score is based on accuracy, not speed or winning games. There are also prizes to be won and certificates will be given out at assembly for those children in the top 50 from across West Lothian.

Good luck everyone!

Cunnigar Candyland Party

Last term Cunnigar won the house cup, so after a vote they decided they wanted to have a Candyland Party. Owen and Ryan worked hard to plan a fantastic party which included chocolate corners, pass the parcel, selfies, wrap the captains and lots and lots of Candy! A big well done to the boys and the P7 helpers for organising our party.

P2 Term 2 Learning Letter

Dear Parent/Carer,

Welcome to Term 2 in Primary 2. All of the children have settled well into P2 and we are looking forward to a busy and fun term 2. The highlights of last term included our Dinosaur IDL context, a trip to the National Museum of Scotland, a visit from Mr T. Rex and sharing our learning with P1 and P7 through our Mid Calder Museum. All pupils have also now joined a Junior Leadership Team and look forward to making positive changes within our school this year.

Learning Letter P2 Term 2

P2 Mid Calder Museum

At the end of our IDL topic about Dinosaurs, Primary 2 invited P1 and P7 to their Museum.

First, we made posters to inform the classes that the museum was about to open, and we put them up all around the school.

Then, we discussed the things we particularly enjoyed about our own visit to the National Museum of Scotland, and we talked about the kind of things we thought would have made our visit even better.                                                         For instance, we really enjoyed handling the dinosaur bones and looking at the huge skeleton models, but we thought that a short film about dinosaurs would have been really interesting too.

Thinking about these points, each Dino Discovery Team planned their own display. They had lots of  amazing ideas! Soon, we had displays that included

  • digging for fossils in the sand
  • sorting dinosaur models into herbivores and carnivores
  • working as a team to build an enormous jigsaw and name the dinosaurs
  • using netbooks to create dinosaur pictures
  • a quiz
  • a short film clip about a stegosaurus

Primary 2 wanted their visitors to have lots of opportunities to pick things up and handle them, to play and to be creative as they learned about dinosaurs. They also created Fact Files about different dinosaurs, and carefully chose non-fiction books to display as well.

PSA Halloween Disco

A big thank you to our PSA for organising such a fun and creative Halloween Party. Two of our house and vice captions attended a PSA to discuss what the pupils would like at the Disco and the PSA used this information to plan our exciting parties. Thank you to all the pupils, parents and staff who attended the discos.

Mr T.Rex Visits Mid Calder

Today Primary 3, Primary 4 and Primary 2 had a very special visitor, Mr T. Rex. At the beginning of their Dinosaurs IDL context, Mr Rex wrote each class a letter asking for their help, as he believed that the people were forgetting about the dinosaurs. He challenged P2, P3 and P4 to set up a Mid Calder Museum to teach other pupils and keep the memory of dinosaurs alive, and we enthusiastically accepted this request.

This week, we held our museums and shared our new knowledge and skills with Primary 1 and Primary 7. We loved showcasing our learning and we felt that we definitely helped Mr T. Rex. We were extremely excited to meet the man himself and asked him lots of relevant questions about his job and his experience of finding fossils. He was able to teach us lots of new and interesting facts about palaeontology and different dinosaurs.

A colossal thank you to Mr T. Rex for coming to visit. What an end to a very exciting week, and a fantastic IDL context. We have loved journeying back to the land before time to stop the memory of dinosaurs from becoming extinct.

Term 1 Celebration Assembly

This morning, we welcomed parents and friends along to our first Celebration Assembly of the 2017-18 session. We acknowledged the success of pupils from across the school and nursery with out STEM Super Star and, in line with our School Improvement Plan, our new Successful Speller Award. One member of each of the 6 groups from our recent Loch Insh residential were also presented with an award.

We announced the Top Scorers for each house and a big well done to Cunnigar who won the House Cup for the term.
