Thank you from Miss Burton

As you know, Friday was my last day at Mid Calder, for now, while I go on a secondment. I just wanted to thank our whole school community for their kinds words, cards, messages and gifts – I am overwhelmed by your generosity.

A big thank you to our staff and children for my leaving assembly, which had me hysterically laughing and crying all at once. It always surprises me how well our children know me!

As I said when I first found out I was leaving, our memories are our greatest treasure and, for me, my greatest memories during my time at MCPS are of your children. We have had so many positive experiences and I hope that I have supported them to ‘believe, achieve and succeed’ and make memories that they will remember in years to come. I made the video below to share some of my happiest memories with them.

I look forward to keeping up with your adventures on our school blog, twitter and visiting school events.

Kind regards,
Miss Burton

Mid Calder 40th Anniversary Open Afternoon

This term every class have had a focus on Mid Calder for their Interdisciplinary Learning context for learning. Classes have investigated different aspects of Mid Calder from its location to its history, shops to services provided in our area. Thank you to everyone who came along to help us celebrate.

Nursery Official Opening

Today we welcomed Executive Councillor for Education, David Dodds to officially open our new nursery building.

We showcased our school’s musical talents by the nursery children singing a song,  Leah played the keyboard and the P6 pupils sang a song from the Lion King. Invited guests included Jim Cameron, Head of Education, Mvairi Lynch, Early Years Development Officer, and other representatives from the council as well as Keith Earley, contracts manager from Hadden Contraction. Representatives from the Parent Council and PSA also joined us.

Thank you for everyone who came along to help us celebrate.

Mystery at Calder House

We are learning to create an interesting setting for our story.
I can use features specific to an imaginative story:
– exciting vocabulary in my story to engage the reader.
– adjectives to describe the setting.
– Calder House as a setting for my story.

– I can use paragraphs to organise my writing.
– I can use past tense.

As part of their IDL context for learning P7 are exploring Mid Calder. They were set the challenge to write a mystery story set in Calder House. First of all they researched Calder House and completed their plan. We then discussed different types of adjectives and vocabulary we would use to describe the house. Next they looked at an example on the board and assessed it using the Success Criteria. After that they wrote their mystery stories and self assessed them.

Cunnigar Candyland Party

Last term Cunnigar won the house cup, so after a vote they decided they wanted to have a Candyland Party. Owen and Ryan worked hard to plan a fantastic party which included chocolate corners, pass the parcel, selfies, wrap the captains and lots and lots of Candy! A big well done to the boys and the P7 helpers for organising our party.
