Goodbye Butterflies

We have now said goodbye to most of our butterflies that we have looked after ever since they arrived as tiny little caterpillars in the post!   Over the last few weeks we have observed them growing and changing (metamorphosis) and building their own cocoons where they hid away for just over a week.   It was a very exciting time to watch them hatch from their cocoons as beautiful butterflies.  Please come into nursery and look at our learning stories to learn more.    Our Butterfly Garden School Kit came from Insect Lore .

The Blue group would like to say a special thank you to butterfly expert Emma Johnston from Butterfly Conservation Scotland.  Emma very kindly took the time to answer the email we sent with all our very important questions to help extend our learning.  Thank you Emma!

Children’s Questions

Tesco visit

Last week some children from the morning and afternoon group went on an adventure to Tesco, when they were shown around by Tracey the Community Champion.
The children visited the bakery where they saw the equipment and ingredients that are used to make bread and rolls and they tasted different types of bread while listening to the story of The Little Red Hen. They explored the fruit and veg aisle were they found out how the fruit and veg grows through different games and everyone had the opportunity to taste different fruits too. They also had the opportunity to smell and touch various produce at the fish counter. They also visited the store room, fridge and freezer where it was – 20! Brrrrr!  Tracey kindly gave each child a pack to take home which included a Farm to Fork certificate.

Learning French with Hannah

This week Hannah a languages student from St Andrews University, has been in nursery working with the children introducing them to French through rhymes and songs.  The children have been counting in French and learning colours in French. Learning to singing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes  in French (also known as Tete, Epaules, Genoux et Pieds)was fun and very popular with the children.   Next term we plan to continue our French topic and develop our international links by linking with a school in Cran Gevrier, France as the town of Bathgate has been twinned with Cran Gevrier since 2010.

John Newlands Procession 2016

Thank you to everyone who took part in this years procession.  The sun was shining and we had a brilliant time.   Well done to all the boys and girls and their brothers and sisters who walked such a long way all around Bathgate.   Special thank you to our very strong Daddies and Mummies who held the banners too.

More photos coming soon…….

If you have any photos from Saturday and would like to share them with us please email them to eva.wilkinson@westlothian.org.uk and we will collate them altogether on here and on a display in the foyer.

Sport Relief at BEYC

The children and staff at Bathgate Early Years Centre have been learning about how Sport Relief can help others this week.  We have used the Sport Relief nursery materials to support our understanding of how children like 5 year old Jinnat from Bangladesh is being helped by the money being raised by Sport Relief.   Sport Relief wrist bands will continue to be on sale next week in the foyer.

Continued community / home link learning

We were very excited to have a visit from a nurse (Lily’s mum) in the afternoon. We discovered that a nurse is someone who cares for us and looks after us if we are poorly.  We also found out about all the different jobs a nurse does in a busy hospital. We had lots of things to see and investigate including a stethoscope and a real cast. We had great fun trying this on and listening for each others heartbeat. Children shared their stories of when they have visited the doctors or spent some time in hospital. Lily’s mum kindly left us a few very interesting books to borrow which will help to further develop our learning and new vocabulary about our bodies and people who help us.

Thank you very much to Lily’s mum for this fun, educational, hands on experience!

If any parents/family members would to come in and chat with the children about your job/role in the community please speak to any of the nursery staff.  We would be delighted to learn from you!

On Tuesday morning the Wraparound children from Bathgate Early Years Centre put on their santa hats and walked to Acerdale House to sing Christmas songs to the ladies and gentlemen at the centre, on Mid Street.  This was a fantastic opportunity for the children to renew friendships with our senior residents of Bathgate and the enthusiasts singing was enjoyed by all!

Here they are pictured with Caitlin McKay, Work Experience student.

Children In Need 2015

This year the children took charge of their own fundraising ideas for Children in Need and voted for a Pyjama day at nursery. We also made Pudsey bear eye masks, Pudsey cookies and sold Pudsey wrist bands. We raised a total of £149.75 for the charity. Thank you to all our children and families for supporting Children in Need.
