P3/2 – Pirates

We are thoroughly enjoying our Pirate theme.  This week we have researched famous pirates including Blackbeard and Mary Read.  We found out some interesting facts about them.  Did you know Blackbeard put fuses at the end of his beard to scare people?

We also looked at pirate clothing and were challenged to be creative and design our own pirate costume.

001 003 004 005 006

As part of our theme on animals around the world we have been working on climate and how if affects different habitats. We discussed why climate change is happening and how we can take steps to reduce the pollution. In groups we created posters encouraging people to stop climate change by recycling, walking instead of taking the car and turning off the tv when it’s not being watched!

We have just started our topic on Animals around the World.  So far we have identified the major continents and oceans of the world and have classified animals into groups.  We have also investigated animal habitats all over the world.

For writing we thought it would be great fun to do a practical activity before we started our writing.  We made an animal face sandwich. After we made our sandwich we wrote instructions to show how we made it.

Don’t they look amazing!!  The children were very proud of their work.

003 004 008 009 010 012

To finish our Romans theme this term, P3 and P4/3 had a Roman scavenger hunt. In groups of three, pupils were given a question sheet and they had to match the question with information hidden in the classrooms and corridor. They then had to answer the questions. All pupils enjoyed finding the hidden clues and in addition to finding out more about what Romans brought to Britain, they were able to improve their reading skills and reading for information.

Debating with P3 and P4/3

004 002 001        P3 and P4/3 were having a debate yesterday. They were split into two teams. One team had to be the Iceni tribe, whose leader was Queen Boudicca. The other team were from the Atrebates tribe. The Iceni were a Celtic tribe who hated Rome and the Atrebates were a Celtic tribe who wanted Roman things in Brittania. Each side had to think about the pros and cons and argue either for Roman or Celtic Britain. There were some excellent points made by both sides and it was clear that everyone has learned a lot about Romans and Roman Britain.

Antonine Guard Visits P3 and P4/3

P3 and P4/3 had a really exciting day yesterday. They had a visit from an Antonine Guard. He came dressed in full Roman uniform and told the pupils all about the Roman army. He showed the different weapons and armour that were used and some pupils had the chance to try and get past the Roman shield. Each child had a sword and shield and they practised marching and attacking in different formations. Then all pupils had the chance to try on chain mail armour, helmets and Roman army boots. They all had a fantastic time!

Roman Fashion Design in P3 and P4/3

044 042 041 039 036 034 033 029 024 016 012 010 008 P3 and P4/3 were given the challenge to design and make a pair of Roman sandals that would fit a member of their group. After looking carefully at the design of Roman sandals they had to choose their material and then work out how to make their sandal. All teams created a pair of sandals that stayed on and the majority of teams made sandals that fitted the team member it was supposed to fit. Judging from the designs there are definitely some budding fashion designers of the future at work here!
