Boghall Primary is a Rights Respecting School. This initiative is pioneered by UNICEF UK and encourages schools to use the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) as a framework for values within the school. Each class has a Class Charter linked to the rights of the child which is discussed and agreed by pupils and staff.
In May 2010 we achieved our Level 1 award and we were delighted when Tam Baillie – Scotland’s Commissioner for Children and Young People – came along to help us celebrate !
In June 2011 we were the first school in West Lothian to achieve the Advanced Level 2 for the Rights Respecting School Award. We continue to promote and encourage a rights respecting ethos within our school and continue to link articles to our ongoing work and planning. We help other children enjoy their rights by supporting Fairtrade, fundraising events and ongoing international school links.
Three members of staff are ambassadors for UNICEF UK having been trained as assessors for Rights Respecting Schools. We also continue to train senior pupils to be assessors and these pupils accompany staff on visits to other schools. They take this task very seriously and share their expertise through discussions with other schools.
