Snowy week!

Snow Spelling – P5B took advantage of the snow on Tuesday and wrote our spelling words in it, which was fun.
We’re off to a flying start with our Victorians context for learning.  As part of that learning, we are doing a book study on the ‘Chimney Child – A Victorian Story’ by Laurie Sheehan and we’re hooked on it.  If you can, ask your child what the big twist in the story has been so far.  The story has generated lots of quality discussions and comparisons of past and present living.  We are developing reading skills such as prediction, characterisation and summarising key events.  Next week, we are going to do role play activities based on the book.
We have also been looking at a timeline of the Victorian period and discussion all the acts that were passed and inventions.  We have researched the life of Queen Victoria and begun writing a biography of her life.
We have also been practising for our assembly and looking forward to seeing you next Thursday.
In Maths, we are learning to tell the time, which is going well.  The children have worked well with their learning partners during warm up activities, with the clocks.  We have finally nailed division!! It’s a really hard concept to understand but everyone has worked really hard to master it and we know that if we are finding something hard or challenging it means we are learning!!
Well done to everyone who recited a poem.  Lots of children were nervous but it didn’t show.  Well done to Katie, Rose, Emily, Luke and Emma who were our class finalists.  Katie, Rose and Emily will take part in the Burns poetry competition on Monday.   Good luck!
Have a lovely weekend!
Here are some photos of our snow spelling!

What do you know about the Vikings?

We have had a fun week and have enjoyed playing in the snow. We started our new topic on The Vikings. We have learned that they didn’t really have horns on their helmets. To relax they liked to swim, wrestle and play football. They made ice skates out of bones to play in the snow. The boys learned to fight from an early age and the girls learned to cook, spin and weave.
In maths we have been learning about shape. We thought about lots of different uses in everyday life for 3D shapes. For example, a ball is the shape of a sphere so that it rolls and a toblerone is the shape of a triangular prism!
In numeracy, we learned about area. You can count the squares of a shape to measure its area.
We enjoyed Scottish country dancing with Mr Jeffries in P.E. and the girls had to dance with the boys!
Have a lovely weekend.

A week of firsts!

This week was a week of firsts! P4b had visiting specialists for Futsal and from NYCoS (the National Youth Choir of Scotland).
Futsal is an indoor game based on football but developing skills for passing and moving. The ball is smaller and more solid than a normal football. We learned how to move through the cones without being tug. We learnt some basic moves to get used to the ball.
Mrs Gray from NYCoS came to start a block of singing games and music with us. We learnt that pulse is a rhythm which goes through all music. We played some clapping and moving games to learn how to keep a steady rhythm. We liked the coca-cola rhyme. We also liked the train game!

The children are keenly learning their words for the assembly and are thinking about costumes. Vikings need plain coloured trousers (tracksuit bottoms, cotton trousers) and plain t shirts, women Vikings need long skirts and a plain shirt. We have some costumes in school for the monks and long skirts for the girls if required.

Learning Partners of the week – Ellie-Rose and Eva.

We have had a very busy week and had lots of things to do and enjoy.
We learned about all things Scottish; the history of Tartan, Scottish foods, bagpipes and Robert Burns. We had a special visit from Mr Mackinnon who showed us the bagpipes. He showed us how they are played and what all the different parts are called. We also learned how to make shortbread. Then we ate it!
Here are our thoughts:
Orlaith: I enjoyed it when Graces’ dad came with the bagpipes.

Primary 2/1 Blog – Week Beginning 15.1.18

Brrr!!! What a cold and snowy time it has been for P2/1 this week.  Lots of us tried our best to battle our way through the snow and we’ve had lots of fun developing new skills and ‘building new neuron bridges’.

Here are our winter theme highlights:

Teigan – “Playing with Kaiden in the snow”

Griffin – “I liked playing with Foana in the snow.  It was really funny because she kept trying to eat the snow that we were using to build a snowman.  Foana likes carrots so was trying to eat the nose as well!”

Rory – “I liked going sledging in the back garden with my mummy.  Mummy pushed me down the hill.  I liked that because I went down the hill very fast”

Cameron – “I liked throwing snowballs at my dad because I threw it at his head and he got me back.  We then went back home and then we played horses together.”

Sarah – “Me and my brother were throwing snowballs at each other”

Rio – “Me and my sister made a snowman.  We used cucumber for its eyes and its nose and we used stones for the buttons.”

Daniel – “I liked building a snowman with my sister too.  The best bit was that we made the body so super big we couldn’t get the head on.  We had to get a step to put the head on!”

Poppy F – “I liked going sledging with my friends and family because my mum pushed me down the big hill and I went flying into the trees and did a forward roll! I was crying.”

Millie – “My favourite part of this week was that me, my mum and my sister built a snowman.  We named it and then had a snowball fight.  After that we went inside to bake a chocolate cake because it was my sister’s birthday.  It was yummy!”

Leah – “I really liked when I built a snowman with my granny because we used brussel sprouts for the mouth and the eyes.   It looked very funny when we put a potato on for a nose”

Leila – “I liked playing in the snow when my mum pulled me down the hill in a sledge”

Emily – “I liked going sledging with my brother, my mummy and my daddy because I liked when I went down the big snowy hills.  it was so cold when I got into the sledge and there was snow all around me.  Once when I was sledging I fell out of the sledge and my face landed in the snow!”

Poppy D – “I enjoyed building a snowman with my sister and my brother.  When we were building the snowman we had a competition to see who made the best one.  The funniest bit was that I used my gran’s lights for the arms and my sister used them for the arms.  My mum came out and my gran went crazy because we had used her good things.  I won the competition.”

Regan – “Me and my dad went to the hill behind my house and we went sledging.  I went down the hill on a sledge and my dad came down it with me…his chin banged on my head and it was very funny.”

Lucy – “There is a new park with a massive hill behind it.  I went right down it and snow went in my face.  When I got home I had to go in a boiling bath so that I could warm up because it was cold.”

Mason – My mummy went to Tesco and she went to Argos.  She bought us some sledges and mine is blue.  I went out in the sledge and I liked it.”

Aiden – “I went sledging with my daddy and we went down the hill.  At the bottom we had a snowball fight and we made a snowman.  When we went inside we played more games”

Breaghannon – “I liked going sledging with my stuffed animals.  Mummy went and bought my stuffed animals and me a sledge and mine was purple.”

Happy New Year and Welcome back!

We started our new mini topic this week on Scots. We learned about Robert Burns and why he is famous and important to Scotland. We have started making our tartan bagpipes and they should be finished by next week. We wrote a poem in Scots Dialect about an animal – they are very interesting! Read them on the wall outside the classroom! We also chose our poem for the Robert Burns competition – 3 people will be chosen to go forward so we should practice learning them at home too.

In maths we finished off learning about Data Handling – we made bar graphs using frequency tables created from our class circle time about our favourite present received. We have started learning about subtraction as well.

In Health and Wellbeing, we are learning how to keep ourselves safe online. We had to choose a quality that makes us special.

Budgeting can be fun! By Class Star

Welcome back everyone to school. It is good being back! We hope you all had a nice Christmas and New Year and that Santa was good to you.

This week we were learning to budget money by organising a Burn’s Supper. We are very excited to have our own Burn’s Supper and looking forward to eating Haggis, Neeps and tatties, Irn Bru and shortbread!!! We had £45 to spend on a main course, sides, drinks, desserts and extras including table decorations and we had to make sure we stayed within our budget which was a little tricky.

We had fun learning about M.C. Escher’s Impossible Pictures and drew our patterns in the same styles as the artist.

We also learned about famous American landmarks and which states they can be found and constructed them using our chosen media.

Next week we will be applying our budgeting skills when ordering and buying food for our class snack during Out and About.

If you have any questions about our learning please just ask us below.

Have a lovely weekend!

Happy New Year!

Although it hasn’t even been a week, we have hit the ground running with our learning!

We are trying something new in the classroom to support and develop our learning.  We have ‘learning partners’.  This is someone we will sit beside all week (picked randomly using lolly sticks) and discuss our learning with.  This will change every Monday.   On a Friday we will say ‘goodbye’ to our talking partner for that week and say something positive about having them as a talking partner.  It’s been a great success so far (although makes the class a bit noisier – but it’s good noise)!

We have started our new LAC which is Victorians and will have our trip to New Lanark (date tbc).

It’s that time of year again when poems are given out to learn for our Scots Poetry Competition.  The poems chosen are; Crocodile by J K Annand, Heron by J K Annand and The Ballad of Janitor MacKay by Margaret Green.

We are finishing of our science and continuing to investigate States of Matter.  Today we investigated water changing from a solid to a liquid (ie ice melting to water) and we investigated temperatures and how we could get our ice to melt faster.

We had ‘exit passes’ (another new thing – everyone has to write what they’ve learned on a piece of paper to hand to the CT before going for break)!  Here is some of our learning…

I have learned that ice can melt faster by putting it on a warm radiator and lots of other ways.

That water needs to be heated to 100 degrees centigrade to evaporate.

If you hold ice to long it hurts!

I learned that water turns into ice when the temperature is below zero degrees centigrade.

I learned that jelly is both a liquid and a solid! (we got a bit side-tracked)

I learned that when you melt ice on a radiator it will create a beautiful pattern on the inside!

I learned that ice melts faster if you put it in warm water.

Here are some photos of us carrying out our investigations…

Have a lovely weekend!

Happy New Year!

This week has been really exciting as we have started using learning partners in class. Each week, we have a new partner chosen by pick-a-sticks and we work with our partner all week. We are hoping to make new friends, learn about new ways of working and develop new skills of working together.

We have started learning about the Vikings. We are reading a very exciting book about a Viking boy called Gunnar. The story started with Gunnar’s dad being killed by raiders and taken off to Valhalla by the Valkyries, the servants of Odin. In writing we wrote a letter to Gunnar telling him a little bit about ourselves and asking him about life as a Viking.

With Mrs Mackenzie, we started looking at the different ways to response to situations and ow these cool, aggressive and weak responses affect the situation. We hope that this work will help us when we experience difficulties in the playground and with our classmates and friends.

We also looked at multiplication and how making an array can help us work out multiplication calucations. In maths we also learnt about the compass and the different points around the compass. We are learning to follow directions using compasses and turns.

In the coming weeks, we will be rehearsing for our assembly and starting to learn some songs so we hope that you will be able to come and share our learning on the 1st February at 2.30 p.m.

Our learning partners of the week this week are Florence and Alfie B.

Christmas fun! By class star

We had such a fun time at our Christmas parties this week! Look at some of our photos! We also loved the panto, oh yes we did! It was about Cinderella and was really funny especially when they got the teachers up to dance. I don’t think the teachers found it as much as we did! We had fun making gingerbread men and melted snowman cakes too!

Have a lovely Christmas and New year
