  • Aidan for excellent effort in instructional writing this week.
  • Emma for great knowledge about 2D shapes and their properties.
  • Demi-Leigh for great reading aloud and very good knowledge of key words.

Dates to remember:

Wednesday 27th November is our next Shared Start where parents and carers can join us in activities related to our senses.

Saturday 30th November is the Christmas Fayre. Please return permission slips if you have been chosen to help on our stall and money and order forms if you want to make a personalised decoration.

Thanks,

P5m: Learning Never Tasted So Good!

This week we began our Chocolate Geology focus. Geology is the study of our planet, Earth; how it was made, what it is made of and how it has changed over time. Chocolate Geology is just the same but all the learning is done through chocolate! This week we explored what was inside the Earth by examining a creme egg and learned how mountains were formed using Oreo cookies. Tidying up after Chocolate Geology lessons is always very tasty!

From The Blog Post Box:

This week I learned…

…how tectonic plates can slide apart from each other or one can slide under another. This is how mountains are made. Lily
…why earthquakes happen.
Aaron
..that if you cut the Earth in half you would see three parts, the crust, the mantle and the core – a bit like a creme egg! Eva
…how to play Highland Cathedral on the drums. Craig
…how to add Hundreds, Tens and Units. Erin M
…how to play basketball. Scott

P3W preparing for the Christmas fayre!

Samantha – We made puppets this week!

Kirsten – We started by sewing the templates together

Liam – People had different puppets. There were Santa Claus’, reindeer, snowmen and penguins!

Sophie – First we went up with the sewing needle, then we went down through the hole. You kept doing this until it was finished.

Noah – It was kind of hard! We got help with this though from others in our class. Samantha helped me.

Ty – The sewing was really easy for me

Kate – We got to stick on the bits on our puppets – like the eyes, arms, noses…

Sophie – Then we made cards to stick on the back of our puppets to show who made them. We drew Christmas pictures!

Brooklyn – We put them to sleep in a box until the Christmas fayre.

Lennox – Night night!

P3/2 Big Talk, Big Fun

Over the last 3 weeks we have been working on our talking skills using Big Talk, Big fun. We have been listening to some interesting sounds and discussing what is making the sound? Where the sound is coming from? Who is making the sound? and What we think is happening. We have also been looking at some interesting pictures and discussing what we see, what we think is happening and what we wonder will happen next. We have been looking at higher order questioning and coming up with some wonderful ideas and suggestions. Some of our suggestions have been very imaginative.  Ciaran thought that the people in one picture were angels who were visiting Disneyland Paris but had travelled froma  different century to do so. We have loved coming up with such imaginative ideas and using our language skills to tell our classmates about our ideas. Feel free to log onto www.takeonepicture.com and have a look at these pictures and let us know what you think is happening.

Diwali Celebrations in P1l & P1b

Primary 1b and Primary 1l have been working with Miss Henderson on the Hindu Festival of Diwali which took place a couple of weeks ago.  The children learned about Rama and Sita and the ten headed monster, Ravana who kidnapped Sita, and how the Monkey King, Hanuman saved Sita from the monster and returned her to Rama and this is the reason why Hindu’s celebrate Diwali.  We also made our own Rangoli boxes.  Hindu’s paint rangoli patterns at Diwali to welcome their goddess Lakshmi into their homes as they believe she brings good luck and happiness.  This week Mrs Jamieson helped us to make milk peda (sweets) to put into our boxes and she also made us an Indian Potato Curry to try with naan bread which some of us thought was delicious.  At home time the children were allowed to try out the peda sweets they had made.  Mrs Leamy thought they were really nice.  We would like to say a big thank you to Megan’s gran (P1l) and Isaac and Lauren’s mums (p1b) who very kindly gave up their time to come in and help us with our baking.

Next week we are going to be learning about Thanksgiving celebrations in America.

Horror in Class 3!

This week at writing time we wrote stories about a haunted house.  We were very excited about this because it was the pupils’ idea.  We had to remember our writing target  ‘use a variety of sentence openers’ when we were writing.

Geordie – My favourite sentence opener was ‘It was a dark and stormy night’.

Geordie also made his writing more exciting by beginning sentences with the words ‘Suddenly’ and ‘Immediately’ :).

Josh – I recorded my story on the iPad.  I liked doing it this way because it was more fun and I could get all my ideas out before I forgot them.

Cary’s story was called ‘Ghostbuster Mansion’. He had a big group of characters including most of his classmates! His story has zombies as well as ghosts in it. Cary is still working on his story. We hope it has a happy ending!

Our Star Writer this week was Callum. His story was titled ‘Callum’s Spooky Day’. He was  the main character in his story which was also set in a mansion. The mansion had lots of rooms, even a computer room and a science room. Oh and it had a ghost too!

Other news this week:

Geordie – I went to my integration school Westfield Primary early this week so I could go out at playtime.  I really liked it because I got to play with my friends.  I would like to go for playtime again next week.

Victory for school football team!

Boghall 4 Balbardie 5

On Wednesday 13th November we played Boghall primary. The squad was Sophie M, Declan, Tom, Fraser, Christopher S, Luke, Ewan, Daniel D, Daniel M and Logan. At the start of the match we went down 2-0 but we still kept our heads up, then Declan scored and made it 2-1. Then we scored our next by Logan scoring and making it 2-2. Daniel D scored from behind the halfway line making it 3-2 to Balbardie. Then after half time Boghall scored again making it 3-3. Logan scored again making it 4-3 and then Boghall equalized again. Balbardie scored making it 5-4 with Logan completing his hat-trick and as a result we won! Match report by Sophie McMillan

Captain’s Comment by Sophie McMillan: “Everyone put 100% effort into it and played really well even though the weather conditions were pouring down with rain and really windy. Well done team.”

Manager’s Comment by Mr Berginis: “I’m very proud of how well you represented the school. You showed resilience and desire to win and you played as a team. Keep it up!”

A week to Remember in p7b

This week we redrafted our Remembrance poems and made a  display outside our classroom. They are our way of showing we remember not only the soldiers who gave their lives in the past but also the soldiers who fight for us every single day across the world.

Our week:

Callum: I enjoyed our lesson about evacuation. We got to experience what it would have been like to be a child evacuated during the war. We all had different things happen to us, some of us had better situations while some had relatives who were killed. It was interesting to see the emotions children felt.

Rabeea: I enjoyed doing long multiplication this week. We were using bigger and bigger numbers and learning how to solve different problems. I also had fun in Drama because we managed to run through the whole of the first act.

Sophie M: My highlight of the week was our school football match against Boghall. We all tried our best, worked as a team and showed we were proud to represent Balbardie.

Christopher A: In Drama, we practised scenes 1-6 and everybody did really well. There was lots of great acting and accents and most had learned their lines off by heart.

Rebecca: We researched famous people from WW2 this week. Louise and I researched Franklin Roosevelt and discovered he was the President of the USA during the war and he had to lead his country through some very tough times.

Isla: I enjoyed doing research on Oskar Schindler this week with Jane. We discovered that he was part of the Nazi party and he worked in a concentration camp but he then helped 1200 Jewish people escape, therefore saving their lives.

Fraser: I enjoyed redrafting my Remembrance poem. I had to choose what order to put my verses in and make sure my rhymes all worked properly. I also really enjoyed researching for my WW2 project this week.

Who has impressed?

Declan: The school football team impressed during our win over Boghall because they put in loads of effort.

Tom: I’m impressed with Fraser who played his first ever game of 7-a sides this week and did well.

Rabeea: Sophie impressed by showing great leadership skills by motivating the football team and leading them to victory.

Isla: Well done to Sam for winning pupil of the week.

Eve: Well done to the Flyers for winning table of the week.

Sophie M: Nicky has impressed by working really hard all this week.

Tom: I’ve been impressed with Josh’s behaviour this week.

Mr Berginis: A big well done to Isla, Dean, Rabeea and Sophie L who are our first four pupils onto step 4.

P2e

We can’t believe it is Friday again!

This week we have been learning about our senses of hearing. We listened carefully to different sounds and tried to guess what they were. We also went on a sound walk to find out what sounds we could hear in the classroom and outside. We are also taking this activity home to find out what sounds we can hear in our house.

In writing we wrote fantastic poems using our senses. We imagined we were at a park and we wrote about what we could see, hear, feel, smell and taste. We used wonderful describing words in our writing.

In reading we have been using Steven Story to help us learn about the beginning, middle and end of stories. We read a story called Aliens Love Underpants and sequenced the story using alien masks and real pants! It was good fun.

On Thursday we went on a trip to the library. Some of the children chose some books to take home on their library card. If you would like a library card please fill in a yellow card and we can get a card on our next trip. We are going to the library on the 5th of December and are going to be involved in a vote for the Scottish Children’s Book Awards.

Awards:

Class Dojo: Mya and Caitlin

Star Pupil: Lucy for writing a fantastic poem.

We will find out the winners of Table of the Week on Monday.

Toy Stories in Class 1

We have been busy discussing our favourite toys and writing about them.

Jayden wrote about his favourite toy Mickey Mouse.

My favourite toy is Mickey Mouse.  He is soft.  He has big ears.  He is black and peach.  I like playing with Mickey.

We have enjoyed listening to Harry and the Robots and even made our own robots using lots of different materials.  We gave our robots a name and have been writing about the special things that they do!

We have our own Balbardie Toy Shop in class 1.   It’s important to keep our shop looking tidy so we make sure to sort the toys into groups to make it easy for the customer to find what they are looking for.

We have been working very hard with Miss Camer0n to create wonderful still life drawings of toys.  We have to look carefully at the size and shape of the toys.  We have also enjoyed mixing primary colours to create new colours.  We used our drawings to create a great toy box display!

We had fun wearing our pyjamas to school to raise money for Children in Need.

Another week done!

We all deserve a rest this weekend because everyone has worked really hard in P5 this week.

Pupil of the week – Carter W

Table of the week – Minions

Maths –

We have been working really hard to identify the strategies we use when doing mental maths calculations. We have all found this a bit tricky.

Lily – This is really hard but I think I am getting better at talking through the strategies I use.

Ray – I am finding it easier to find the missing number in my sums because we talk a lot about different strategies and I know what ones I need to use.

Topic-

We have used our topic as a focus for our writing this week

Eve – We wrote a letter to a nobleman about the death of Alexander III. I think the Scottish Wars of Independence is a really good topic.

Kerry – I enjoyed making a wanted poster for William Wallace.

HWB –

We all made posters on the theme of friendship. We focussed on words associated with what a good friend is.

We all wrote a post-it note about what happiness is . Here are some of our contributions –

Lucy – Happiness is …..

the smell of a cake                                                                                                          a friend                                                                                                                             love                                                                                                                                        a box of chocolates

P6a Moon Landing

This week we have had another very busy week. Not only did we start our Literature Circles, we also prepared for a moon landing by designing vehicles and space buildings. Here are a few of our finished products.

Harry and Flyn

It has a camera on the top so that it can take pictures of The Moon. It can move so that it can explore the moon and pick up rocks.

Chloe and Emily
Chloe and Emily

The building on The Moon is about 5′ tall, which is the same size as Emily! We are a good team.

Jay and Jack

Here are our models. One is a NASA rocket, it can fly up to the moon and 100 miles per hour. It can carry up to 1000kg. Our other model is a space probe, it has a bin and arms at the front and a satellite at the top.

We also learned about the phases of The Moon and how The Moon affect the oceans on Earth. We are trying to make a video of our work so hopefully we will be able to upload that soon!

Hope you have enjoyed reading about our learning this week. If you have why not leave us a commnet? Miss Anderson will give a prize to the person who leaves the BEST comment for us.

Sleepy Heads in P1l

Lots of people in P1l forgot to get dressed this morning , they came to school in their pyjamas! Thank you to everyone for their donations to Children in Need.

While we had our milk today we thought about all the things we have been learning this week and we came up with lots of things.

With Mrs Spence we were writing about the adventures of Rambling Rosie. This week she stayed with Liam and he took her to play golf then Mrs Spence took her swimming. We have working on our adding skills and using the + and = symbols. Mrs Hay came into class on Thursday and we were making sound stories.  We all had a turn of playing music and being a good audience.  We have learned all the songs from our Nativity and we made angels to go on a display in our classroom. We were being animal detectives on Thursday, we carried on our work with the story Dear Zoo and created our own page drawing an animal of our choice.  We then worked with a partner to ask questions to find out what animal they had drawn.

Well done to Callum who is Pupil of the Week and to Suvi and Megan who are on Step 4 for their excellent behaviour.

Bye from P1l

Christmas Fayre Crafts

During Art and Design this week in P3/2 we made christmas tree baubles to sell at the fayre.

They are really lovely, they are made of felt and are very bright and cheerful.  We think they will look great on christmas trees!

We each decorated two baubles and we hope to sell them all.  We have yet to decide on a price.  Any suggestions?

Zoe and Sophie are showing off a couple below.

Look out for our stall at the fayre.

Cushion Clubs

A busy week in Cushion Clubs with 2 new members in the P3/2 Club.  The P3/2 group made poppies and discussed the significance of the 11th of November.  The new P1 Club register when they come in with a Firework with their name on it. The stick this on a fluffy cloud or a dark cloud and tell the group how they are feeling and why. They enjoy sitting on the couches!

News from P1b

Every Wednesday afternoon we spend half an hour completing special activities with our buddies. This week we have been learning about 3D shapes. Our buddies helped us to make 3D shapes from net templates. We made cylinders, cubes, cones and cuboids. These are now displayed in our maths area.

On Thursday afternoons, we have outdoor P.E to develop the skills we are learning with Mr Jeffries. We are learning to use our own space and travel safely. Here are some of our thoughts: Elliot- ‘I enjoy the bubble game.’ Sofiye- ‘You’re not allowed to touch anthing incase you pop your bubble.’ Ailah- ‘You must listen to instructions.’ Isaac- ‘I like playing Tig.’

Thank you to everyone in our class for dressing up and supporting Children in Need. Everyone looked super and cosy in their Pyjamas!

Have a lovely weekend,

 P1b
