What a big week !

Topic – we have begun learning about Florence Nightingale. We were really surprised at how bad the conditions were for soldiers during the Crimean war. Wounded soldiers would have to sleep on dirty floors with rats running around. Thanks to Florence we have much better conditions in hospitals today.

Writing – this week we focussed on poetry. The theme for our poem was PC Arnott. We had a competition and the class voted for their favourite poem which was read out at assembly and then presented to PC Arnott. Eve’s poem received the most votes. Well done Eve!!

Rachel Q – I really liked writing a poem. I think Eve’s was really good.

Ava C – It was hard to make the poem rhyme. I found it easier to write the poem using rhythm, I did this by tapping on the table while I was saying the poem.

Maths – We have been learning how to subtract with money and some of us have been changing pence to pounds and vice versa. It has been tricky but we are getting better!

On Monday afternoon we were lucky enough to be able to go along to Bathgate Academy to watch the P6 show, The Wizard of Oz. We walked all the way there and all the way back! We were very impressed with the acting and singing and can’t wait until we are in P6 and it’s our turn to do the show.

As if we didn’t get enough exercise on Monday we did our sports mile on Thursday and we have been raising money for Sports Relief with a bake sale on Friday morning and lots of us have bought Sports Relief wrist bands.

Have a great weekend!

Class 3 Enjoy The Wizard of Oz

This week Geordie and Josh performed in the p6 show, The Wizard of Oz.  Josh was a munchkin and Geordie was the gate keeper to Oz.

Geordie – It was unbelievable being in the show.  I was really tired after the show.  I did really good and was awesome.  Mum bought me a Lego City toy for working so hard in the show.

Josh – The show was great.  I didn’t like getting the make-up on but it helped me look like a munchkin even though I was too tall. Dad bought me a Bionicle from the internet for doing so well.

On Monday the other boys in class 3 went to Bathgate Academy to watch the dress rehearsal.

Callum – I loved this play.  I wish I could be in the Wizard of Oz.  Even though I wasn’t in it I loved the show.

Cary – It was different than I thought.  It was better than I thought it was going to be.  I thought it was going to be exactly like the movie but it was a bit different.  The actors and actresses were good.

Miss Robertson and Mrs Stewart helped Josh and Geordie back stage.

Miss Robertson – I think both boys worked very, very hard and put in a lot of effort.  I was extremely proud at all performances and I can’t wait to help the children next year.

Mrs Stewart – I loved the show.  I thought all of the pupils in p6 did a fantastic job.  I was very proud of Josh and Geordie.

Josh and Geordie would like to say a huge thank you to Mrs Innes and Pamela for helping them to prepare for the show 🙂

Ancient Egyptian Personal Projects

This week we handed in our personal projects! We had to complete these at home as a Home Learning task and some of the projects were astonishing. Everybody received a certificate for their super interesting personal projects. There were 3 winners who stood out as making an extra effort. These were: Sophie, Noah and Liam.

A few of the projects were:

Caitlin – My project was a scroll made out of papyrus paper. I made it by putting tea bags on it and then putting it in the oven to make it look real.

Sam – My project was an Egyptian book. On the front cover was Tutankhamun’s sarchophagus.

Rowan – My project was a very big 3D wooden pyramid! I made it by putting six planks of woods and cut them into triangles and stuck them together. We then painted it with glue and tipped a bag of sand over it.

Jennie – My project was a booklet. Inside the booklet was lots of different facts and pictures of things I researched.

Noah – My personal project was a book of lots of facts and pictures inside of pictures of me at Edinburgh museum. I also made a canopic jar with a jackel head on top and it had a mummy stomach inside. I won a prize for my efforts.

Sophie – My project was The Book of the Dead and I made a death mask and a model of Ancient Egypt. I had lots of interesting facts and I made the death mask look like it had been burnt. Also, I won a prize for my efforts!

Liam – My personal project was a booklet with facts and I won a bookmark prize for my great efforts also!

Well done Primary 3! Your efforts were outstanding 🙂

RAINFOREST TECHNOLOGY with p7b

This week in class we’ve been learning about technology used by tribes in the Rainforest. First of all we discussed what technology means…

Isla: “Technology is the solution to a need or a want. For example, humans wanted to communicate over long distances so invented mobile phones.”

Dean: “Another example is the hoover. We wanted to be able to keep our houses clean so someone invented a hoover.”

Declan W: “We wanted to be able to play our games on the move so mobile devices like tablets were invented.”

Alistair: “The Egyptians wanted massive pyramids and needed to move the huge blocks so invented a system of using logs to roll the blocks.”

The tribes in the Rainforest have three main sets of needs:

Alexander: “One of their main needs is food and water.”

Luke: “The others are shelter, warmth and health.”

Here are some examples of tribal technology:

Sophie M: “They need to communicate quietly so they use hand signals and bird whistles.”

Dean: “To meet their need for food they go hunting and use blowpipes because they are quiet so don’t startle the animals.”

Declan S: “To meet their need for food they use a drug from a plant called Barbasco which makes fish dizzy and easier to catch.”

Rabeea: “To meet their need to clean or drink water they use bromeliads because they are huge and collect lots of rainwater.”

Zenaib: “To meet their need for fire to keep warm and cook they use a fire drill. They make holes in a log and rub a stick to create friction which creates fire.”

Hannah: “To enable them to stay away from the floods, some tribes build treehouses. Some of these are as tall as 35 metres tall!”

Jane: “They use coca leafs and chew them to get rid of headaches and this meets their need for health.”

Taylor: “They use hammocks so they can stay off the forest floor to avoid being eaten in their sleep by driver ants.”

Sophie L: “They put poison from frogs on their arrows because it makes the monkeys slower and easier to catch.”

Who has impressed this week?

Dean: “Sam impressed me by overtaking Mr Berginis for a few seconds during the Sports Relief Mile.”

Rabeea: “PC Arnott impressed me with being able to cope with keeping all of us safe!”

Zenaib: “PC Arnott has impressed me by keeping us safe over the years and talking to us about internet safety and road safety.”

Sam: “Jason Bonnar in p1 impressed me by winning the dance competition we held at wet lunch!”

Christopher S: “Declan S impressed me at sports elective by saving all of the penalties in the Penalty King competition.”

Amber: “Rebecca impressed me by finally finding her pulse during the Sports Relief mile!”

Hannah: “Taylor impressed me because she done well at sports elective by keeping in time with the music.”

Sophie M: “Both the Laurens impressed me by doing excellently as Dorothy during the Wizard of Oz.”

Mr Berginis: “I loved attending the p6 show on Wednesday night and everybody did fantastically, I was very impressed!”

Sports Relief

Yesterday we ran ten laps around the gym hall for Sports Relief.  We learned that this is a charity that can help other people have better lives.  We looked at a Powerpoint of a boy in Ghana who worked all day and did not have the right to an education or play.  We thought about how lucky we were and discussed ways we have the right to play and drew matching pictures. Today we got to go the bake sale!  We bought lots of yummy cakes to raise money for Sport Relief.  Thank you to all the boys and girls for taking part.

P2g

Lots of success again this week, with five new entrants into the Golden Club and four pupils reaching stage 4.  We have been working really hard on listening and putting our hand up to ask questions.

We completed our Sport Relief challenge in record time, and learned about what Sport Relief is about and how we are helping other children.  We also got lots of yummy cakes at the Bake Sale. A great effort by all children, we are all very proud of ourselves!

We read Zog this week and used the story to write about him.  We worked hard to describe Zog and remember our beginning, middle and end.  We are going to be practising a lot of this so that we can get our work onto our ‘Super Story Wall’.

A huge thank you to all our families who helped us with our Castle challenge.  The Castles are all fabulous and we love playing with them.  We will have our photographs for next week.

See you at Mr Skellybones!!

P3/2 Class Trip

On Wednesday 19th March, P3/2 visited Callendar House in Falkirk for a Romans workshop.  We had an absolutely brilliant day!  The workshop was very informative, we enjoyed handling some Roman artefacts and learning about what they were made of.  We found out more about the Antonine wall and got to visit the remains of it, which was great.

The boys and girls enjoyed dressing up as Roman soldiers and charging at the adults!  The shields and helmets were not too heavy but felt it in the wind!  We got the chance to explore the museum and ask questions.

Marie and Jennifer, who led the work shop, were very impressed at how knowledgeable the children were about the Romans and I (Mrs Laidlaw) was very proud of their answers.

Luckily the weather stayed dry so we enjoyed a short walk after lunch and a play at the park before returning for the bus.

P3/2 would highly recommend a visit to Callendar House.

Sport Relief Mile

Unfortunately our Sports Relief Mile event which was to take place at the sports centre this morning had to be cancelled because of the weather.  We still came to school in our sports clothes and instead of running the mile outside we were able to go as a class to the gym hall and run together around the hall 10 times.  We all did very well and were glad we got to do our own Balbardie Sports Relief Mile.

We will be raising money for Sports Relief at our Bake Sale tomorrow so bring your pocket money if you want to buy a cake.

Primary 1b Easter Egg Fun

The children in Primary 1b today made colourful Easter Egg patterns with lots of different materials.  They had great fun using the stampers to cut out shapes to stick on their eggs.  Once they had finished they cut out the eggs ready to go home nearer to Easter time.  The children were able to recognise that Christians celebrate Easter to show the stone which the angel rolled away from Jesus’ tomb when he came alive again.

Rights Respecting Schools News

Article 24 is about the right to nutritious food and clean water. As part of our RRS work we would like to make a food bank. We would like you to donate some food – nothing fresh or out of date please. Tins are good because they last a long time in a cupboard. Things like soup, tins of vegetables, tins of fruit, beans, beans and sausages, dried pasta and lentils. We are going to work with the High Church to help give out the food. Could you buy an extra tin in your shopping this week and hand it in to help people who don’t have a lot of food? Thank you for donating .
sincerely Archie p3h

Easter Egg Fun in P1l

Last week the children in Primary 1l watched a film all about the Easter Story.  This week we dicussed that Christians beleive that Easter Eggs show the stone that was rolled away from Jesus’ tomb to show his mother that he had risen from the dead.  Everyone decorated their own Easter Eggs with lots of different materials.  They had great fun doing this activity and are looking forward to bringing them home nearer to Easter.

A week in p7b with the Yanomami

Our learning –

Isla – I enjoyed writing the story of My Day With Yarima. I had to pretend I had spent a day in the Yanomami tribe with her and had woken up the next day and written about it. I don’t know why I enjoyed it but I really did!

Rabeea – I enjoyed learning how to simplify fractions because it helped us if we had a really big fraction and it made it smaller and simpler to use.

Christopher A – I really enjoyed the p3h assembly as it was my care class and I know they have been working really hard on it and I’ve seen them rehearsing and helped them learn the songs. It was really inspirational how all the class came together and worked as a team to get it done.

Jane – I enjoyed my sports elective which was Musical Theatre. We were dancing to Greased Lightning and it was fun to learn. In the future we will be performing a show…

Sam – I enjoyed my sports elective which was badminton. We began by playing a couple of games gainst each other then we did a warm up and at the end we did a challenge called King of the Court. The winners were Tom and Ewan (p6).

Luke – I enjoyed doing the sports elective. I also did badminton. I enjoyed it even though it wasn’t the one we were supposed to do this week.

Zenaib – I liked doing Keeping Myself Safe because I learned that if a situation like that ever happened in the future I would know what to do. For example, Share It means if something bad happens you must share it with someone you trust like a teacher, parent or Childline.

Who has impressed?

Christopher A – I think p3h impressed me because as I said above they worked as a team and came together to make a wonderful assembly.

Jane – Alexander got pupil of the week and this impressed me because he helped another person in the class with her fraction work and he worked hard to understand his own fraction work.

Taylor – Everybody at Musical Theatre impressed me because we did Greased Lightning and everybody enjoyed it and worked hard to learn the dance.

Fraser – Sam impressed me by coming second in the King of the Court challenge at badminton.

Rabeea – My table impressed me by winning table of the week.

Sam – Fraser impressed me by coming second in King of the Court because he was up against some really good players.

Sophie M – Declan S impressed me at football elective by being a great goalkeeper and making some superb saves.

Mr Berginis – I was impressed by everybody on the football elective because they worked hard, followed instructions and we had lots of fun.

P4b

This week was very busy!

In Maths we were able to give directions using distance and compass points. We started work on division and found that it is the opposite of Multiplcation! Some us are working on subtraction and we found that is the opposite of addition! Lots of opposites.

We have started exploring the ‘Cybercafe’in the ‘Think you Know’ weblink. We looked at how to research safely and using key words. We then also researched facts about India and added our page to our project book. In music we learnt about the beat and rhythm.

In topic we had lots of fun! We learnt some Bollywood dance moves and were able to use these with a song called ‘Chaiyya Chaiyya’. We loved this and were very good at picking up the moves. Some of the moves had strange names like windscreen wiper and horse move – Mrs Ghafoor renamed it the gallop beacause that’s what it looked like!

We joined P4g and were split into three groups. Each group got the chance to do each of the following activities. With Miss Goff we learnt about the Taj Mahal, With Mrs Jamieson we learnt how to cook a chappatti and then we got to eat it with potato curry, With Mrs Ghafoor we got to dress up in traditional Indian clothes – both boys and girls clothes, we designed our own henna pattern and if we wanted we could get that on our hands or we could choose a pattern from the book. We also got the chance to speak with Mrs Ghafoor’s mum who was in Pakistan. She answered a lot of our questions about life in Pakistan. Pakistan and India share a lot of cultural aspects. Some of our questions were hilarious but completely valid.

What’s the environment like?

What’s the weather like?

What is load shedding?

What’s the capital of Pakistan?

What’s the national dance?

Have you ever ridden on the top of a train or bus?!!

Can you answer the questions?

A big thank you to Mrs Cameron, Mrs Noble, Mrs Jamieson and Mrs Clark who helped us have this fun and exciting afternoon.

A spooky week in P2e

We have had a very strange week in P2e. On Thursday morning Miss Elliot found a dirty piece of paper in our castle. It was a letter from a knight called Eric. We think Eric might have been a ghost who died in battle. We are really excited but also confused about how he got here. We decided to try and catch him on camera. We have left a camera on in the castle to see if he comes back. We also wrote letters back to Eric to find out more about him and to find out more about knights. We will let you know what we find out!

This week we have been busy creating lots of art work . We have designed pictures of the main characters from the Wizard of Oz for the float. The winner will get to have their picture used on the float. We all hope our picture gets chosen. We have also been working on our sketching skills and sketched pictures of Stirling Castle. We found out about jousting and create moving jousting pictures.

Awards:

Pupil of the Week: Karys

Class Dojo: Caitlin

Table of the Week: Brights Sparks

See you all next week!

Indian Galore! P4g

This week we have been studying India as part of our topic ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. The best part of the week was when we joined up with P4b and rotated around three exciting tasks. These included dress up in children’s traditional Indian clothing, art picture of the Taj Mahal, making and tasting chapatti and dahl curry and lastly designing our own henna tattoos and having them painted on the palm of our hands! We also learned that the most common form of transport in India is rickshaws and there is no legal limits of the number of people on public transport so people can just jump on anywhere at their own risk and not even wear a seatbelt! Also, there are certain areas and certain times of the days where electricity has to be shared so not everyone across the whole country gets electricity at the same time. This is called shed loading. Another fun task was learning how to Bollywood dance to a song Chaiyya Chaiyya.

Look at our amazing henna tattoos:

Question of the Week: Do you know any interesting facts to share with us about a foreign country?

Have a blast this weekend!

P4g

Hello from P1l

Hello Everyone

Lots happening this week, Mrs Leamy was sure she actually saw smoke coming out of someones ears because their brains were working so hard.  We have all moved on in maths, some of us have been looking at number facts for 5 and some have been looking at subtraction.  We have been using cubes to help us with take away sums and we learned the take away sign.

In our Superheroes topic we looked at villains, we looked at how they look and thought of words we could use to describe them. We all created our own villain and described them.  We followed this up by looking at how sometimes in real life people can not be very nice and how this makes other people feel.  We then got rid of our worries by drawing them on a ‘worry bag’ and let go of them with everyone elses.

We also started to look at the alphabet and have started to practise writing some capital letters.  We know that names and days of the week have a capital letter.

Next week we are going to the library on Monday and doing the Sport Relief Mile on Thursday.

Bye for now from P1l

Assembly

We have worked really hard to learn our lines, songs and actions for our Ancient Egyptian Assembly.  We really enjoyed sharing this with our family and friends too.  Here are some of our thoughts:

* Callum was proud that he was able to use the microphone and talk clearly.

*Robyn was a little nervous (but we couldn’t tell) but gave it her best shot.

*Lots of us are proud and had fun!

*We loved getting into character and dressing up.

*Miss Holwill thinks we are all stars!

Gary really enjoyed it and can’t wait to watch the next one…..
