P3w’s highlights of the week:

This week has been an extremely busy week for P3w! We have had a lot going on and we have a lot to tell you about. Some of our highlights this week have been:
Alanna – We have been learning how to tell the time this week and we played a really fun game on Education City called ‘Wakey wakey’ and ‘Stig on the bus’
Ty – When we were playing these games, we had to guess what time it was on the screen and Stig would do something funny if we got it right
Lennox – We have been learning about the hour, half past, quarter past and quarter to. I’m finding it really fun and I want to do it for a long time!
Eva – On Thursday, we went up to the gym hall and there was a man named Alexander and he did lots of tricks and he was really funny! This was the surprise for people who were in The Golden Club
Sophie – We did some dancing after which was really fun. They were handing out prizes and then we played a game
Noah – The game we were playing was ‘Bridges’ and if the music stopped we had to drop down. I got tickled!
Harvey – I got to do one of the tricks with Alexander. He made the wand float and I found it really easy!
Cole & Kirsten – On Tuesday we took part in the baton relay run which schools in Bathgate took part in. We ran with some teachers all the way down to Bathgate West Nursery with our baton we made in class and then we got to have a drink.

Liam – Another exciting thing we got to do this week was make stovies and soup. They were really tasty!
Caitlin – We made stovies and soup because we are learning about farming and how different foods come from farms
Rory – I liked making the stovies because I liked chopping up the sweet potato. I was one of the first ones finished
Alanna – The stovies and the soup were delicious!
We got to sit in class and eat our stovies and soup at the end of the day and we all had a taste! Some of us had never tried stovies or carrot and potato soup before so this was something new that we tried.

Park Fun with P1l

Hello Everyone

P1l had a great afternoon at the park this week and we were so lucky as the sun shone all the time we were there.

We started our visit with a park scavenger hunt. Everyone did really well at hunting for things and Mrs Leamy was quite surprised because a lot of people crossed off squirrel. Each time she looked she couldn’t see one but there were lots of promises that people had definitely, definitely seen squirrels in Balbardie Park, so next time you are there keep your eyes peeled:)

We had a quick snack and a creepy crawly quiz then it was off to the play park. Before we went in we all had to look for something which was moved by a push force and something that we pull. We discovered that the park is a very good place do this as there were so many things that move.

Then it was fun time.

It’s the final countdown!

We can’t believe there is just over a week until the holidays! We are all looking forward to meeting our new teachers tomorrow.

Writing –
P5 have spent the last 10 weeks creating wonderful stories. We used our What a Wonderful World topic as the stimulus to our story. We began by creating a character, a scientist or explorer like Darwin! We then designed our own habitat and created a species that could survive in that habitat. We gave our species special adaptations to help them survive in our particular habitat.
We began our stories by writing an opening paragraph, where we set the scene and introduced the character. We used adjectives and adverbs to describe our character.
Next we wrote a paragraph to build up excitement. Here we described our setting and our new species, again using adjectives and adverbs to describe what we heard, saw, felt, smelled and tasted!
We then wrote about the main event, the problem involving the character which he or she needs to resolve.
Next the character had to find a solution to the problem! How would they resolve the situation?
Finally we wrote an ending to our story! Did we die? Did we become famous for discovering a new species like Darwin?
We have written our edited and up-levelled version in our Profile Jotters.

Here are our highlights of the year!

Lily – I enjoyed writing the adventure story about discovering a new species.

Taylor – I enjoyed writing a Diary of a Victorian School Day.

Erin M – I enjoyed writing the biography of Florence Nightingale.

Scott – I enjoyed making my species out of collage.

Charlie – I enjoyed going to Lowport.

Josh – I enjoyed writing the biography of Florence Nightingale.

Nadia – I enjoyed learning about different Victorian inventions.

Craig – I enjoyed going to Lowport.

Liam – I enjoyed learning about the Victorian toys.

Abigale – I enjoyed having Mrs McClafferty and Mrs Mackenzie as teachers (thank you Abigale)!

Erin H – I enjoyed going to New Lanark and learning all about Victorians.

Eva – I enjoyed re-enacting the Victorian classroom.

Robbie – I enjoyed having Mrs McClafferty and Mrs Mackenzie as teachers – they’re the best! (Thank you Robbie and I agree)!

Sophie – I enjoyed our What a Wonderful World topic because I love animals.

Emma C – I enjoyed the Victorian afternoon tea party.

Megan – I enjoyed creating our own habitats and species.

Leon – I enjoyed writing my William Wallace story.

Travis – I enjoyed Mrs Waddell’s fun fair!

Drew – I enjoyed learning about the Victorian toys.

Ross – I enjoyed the jungle bashing in Low port.

Ava – I enjoyed my class talk on the telephone.

Disney Bake Sale

On Friday 13th June 2014 we had a Disney Bake Sale in school to raise money for Save the Children. Some of the P4’s had a loom band stall running too to help raise as much as we could. We all had a really good time, wearing our Disney costumes and selling all of the cakes. Thank you ti everyone who made us cakes to sell – they were all delicious. We raised £158 from the Bake Sale and £54.20 from the loom bands. We are so happy to have raised so much for a good charity.

This week – class 2

Some children from Class 2 enjoyed the Procession. All the children in Class 2 have been enjoying have some time in their new classes. They said that they are enjoying  spending time with their new teachers and the other children. Liam is at Disneyland this week and is  missing the fun at Balbardie.

Aiden – I did lots of integration with my p4 class. I enjoyed swimming this week I got my “stookie” off on Thursday. I could swim again. I was good at it.  I did some art in class P4 and liked this.

Caitlin – Visiting Class 3 again this week has been fun.

Cody – We learned how to make giant bubbles.

Dylan -I wrote about how to make bubbles.

P2e

In maths this week we have been learning about division. We all know that dividing means to share equally. We are now all very good at dividing and can share out larger numbers. Miss Elliot is very impressed!

In writing this week we have been writing a story about a pirate. The story had to have a beginning, middle and end. In the beginning we had to use describing words to describe what the pirate looked like and where the story was set. We have also been learning about speech  marks and some of us tried to use these in our writing.

In our homework last week we were set a challenge to be scientists and find out what happens to water when it gets really cold and really hot. Some of us found out some really interesting information. In class we look at ice and found out that when it gets warm it melts. When water gets warm it starts to evaporate and we could see the steam coming out of the kettle. We know that ice is a solid, water is a liquid and steam is a gas.

We all enjoyed the bake sale today and we hoped we raised lots of money for the school.

Catch up from P3h

We really enjoyed health and fitness fortnight…here are some of our highlights:

  • we did gymnastics and it was amazing!
  • we did lots of faces at sports day.
  • we had a close competition during curling.
  • bowling was tricky as the bowls went too far but it was fun.
  • funky fitness was street dancing, we managed to learn a whole routine
  • and lots and lots of skipping.

In class we are now learning about healthy eating and are looking forward to doing some cooking.

In other news…

In art we have been creating work inspired by Andy Warhol.  We had to trace an image so we could repeat it.  Then we were colour mixing primary colours to make secondary colours.  If we then added a primary colour again we made tertiary colours.  We turned everyday products into art.

P1’s Trip to the Botanic Gardens

Yesterday we went on our school trip to the Botanic Gardens. When we arrived we had a look around the garden and had a play. We then learned a special code word which was SWAF- this stands for shelter, water, air and food. That is what living things need to survive.
At lunch time we had a teddy bears picnic. There was a large bear called Edward. He left some clues so we could find our lunch. He was about to eat without us but we just made it in time!
In the afternoon we went to the woods and played a tree game. The lady was pretending to chop the trees down and if they were chopped down, the bears had to find another tree for shelter. The bears couldn’t survive when there wasn’t enough shelter. This taught us that we need to take care of living things. We had a fab day. Here are some pictures of our teddy bear’s picnic.

Where is the Bear? P1l

Hello Everyone

We had a great day yesterday at the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh.

We were all very excited when we got on the bus and it didn’t take to long to get there.

We began the day in the Education Room which was like being inside a big tree. We learned about S.W.A.F which stands for Shelter, Water, Air and Food which are the things we need to survive. We also heard about Edward Bear who was hiding in the woods and it was our job to follow clues and find him.

We started our quest looking for Edward in the big garden and learned about how people are chopping down trees where bears live and it is making the bears angry and sad.

Then we went on a Rainbow Chip hunt looking for plants to match the colour of our chip. We walked through the woods finding clues from Edward as we went. We were very good at answering his questions and we all remembered what S.W.A.F stands for.

Eventually we found Edward Bear, he was guarding our packed lunches and thankfully hadn’t eaten them.

After lunch we went back into the gardens and put all our new knowledge to the test when we built magic islands using S.W.A.F to help us.

We had a great day on our trip, Mrs Leamy was very proud of us and there were lots of tired boys and girls on the way home.

Cushion Clubs

Last week both Cushion Clubs went on an outing to Deep Sea
World in North Queensferry.  They saw
lots of snails, frogs, fish, spiders and sharks. They all enjoyed the moving
walkway and had to go round quite a few times to enjoy it fully! They watched
the seals being fed and doing some tricks. They had lunch there and then came
home on the bus.  It was a great day!
Comments from pupils were ‘Awesome’,’ Great’, ‘Fun’ and ‘Scarey’!

P3/2 Last Shared Start

P3/2 had their last shared start last week. We had a themed Oscar celebration where the children awarded their classmates different certificates of achievement for different things. The children made their own awards up and we all celebrated the end of the year together. We had a great time thinking about everything we had learned this year and enjoyed our parents being there to see us getting our awards. We also said goodbye to Mrs Laidlaw and wished her a wonderful and healthy maternity leave. (no sign of baby yet though!) Mrs Laidlaw and I would like to see a huge thank you to the children in P3/2 for making this year a wonderful and memorable year. Enjoy the holidays when they come everyone.

Fitness fortnight continued for 3w

This week has been just as fun as Week 1! We have all really enjoyed the range of sports we have taken part in and thank all of the organisers and coaches for such a wonderful time.

The exciting sports we took part in this week were:
-Modern bowls
-Skip-a-thon
-Ball wrestling

Everything has been very fun and very interesting, but Miss Wilson’s highlight was seeing us all having such a great time at Sports Day. She is very proud of us!

Fitness Fortnight Continued…

This week, as part of fitness fortnight we played bowls and wrestling. In bowls we tried to get our bowls as close to the Jack as possible. The person closest to the Jack scored a point for their team. We were very competitive! At wrestling, we used our arm strength to wrestle the ball from another person. It was great fun!

Yesterday, a lady called Rachel visited our class to do a music lesson with us. We were learning to keep the beat. We sang songs and played games. Our favourite game was the lycra game. During this we sang a song and moved teddies from side to side on a large piece of lycra. This was to help us feel the beat. We are looking forward to another music lesson in two weeks’ time.

Have a great weekend. We hope you enjoy the procession.

As you can see the skipathon provided to be very popular. We had another sporty week with bowling, wrestling and skipping. In health and wellbeing we were looking at how to wash our hands properly and in our Gardeners World topic we looked at nocturnal animals that come into our garden at night.

Bye for now P1l

Reminder – Botanics trip on Thursday please remember your teddy and packed lunch.

Class 2 Are Erupting! :)

Class 2 were learning about volcanoes with Miss Barrie.  Everyone learned interesting facts and then made a volcano.  They even erupted!

Liam said “Wow the volcano was AMAZING!”  Liam’s favourite part was when the vinegar was added and the volcanoes erupted.

Dylan liked learning about volcanoes.   Dylan has been researching facts about volcanoes.  “The biggest volcano is on Mars.  Jupiter has volcanoes too“.  Dylan liked making a volcano and watching it erupt.  He said “I liked it erupting but it was smelly because of the vinegar”

Cody said “The volcanoes were EPIC!  Don’t add too much vinegar or you will get soaked with lava!  The lava is the magma that is in the real life volcanoes.  You can hardly see the magma.  There are different types of volcanoes.  You could get a book about volcanoes so you know what volcanoes are for.  We have been looking at one in our class.”

Cameron enjoyed watching the volcanoes erupt.  He said “They kept erupting over and over and over.  It was exciting”.

Class 3 – Fitness Fortnight, Week 2

During the second week of Fitness Fortnight Class 3 tried lots of different activities.

On Monday we had wrestling, Tuesday was the obstacle course and on Wednesday we had the skipathon.

Callum – The obstacle course was really fun,  it was good that we had the ropes out. When I first went on the ropes I didn’t know what to do so Miss Robertson helped me. I sat on the knot and I swung across to the other side. Wrestling was really fun.  I had to get my partner down by pulling their arms. It was a bit tricky.

Cary – Wrestling was fun at PE. My favourite part of the wrestling time is when you had to snatch the ball out of the other person’s hand when you were rolling about. It was great with Callum who was my partner! The obstacle course was a nice activity too. I finally got to swing on the rope. There was also a tunnel, a running and jumping course and a high jump.

Geordie – The best bits of the obstacle course were the rope swing and running and jumping mountains. The tunnel was the hardest part. I didn’t really liked the skipathon. There was a lot of skipping and I am not so good at it. Mum sponsored me £5 for trying. I really liked the wrestling, it was me versus Aiden. It was a good match, it was a tie. It was very funny! The aim of ball wrestling is to get the ball. It was easy because I am so strong!

Liam – I was crawling through the tunnel. It was dark in the tunnel. I was happy, it was fun :).

Our views on Commonwealth Health and Fitness Fortnight

Callum – It was awesome, cool and great. My highlight was the obstacle course. It was awesome!

Cary – It was fairly good but not perfect. My perfect fitness fortnight would have wrestling everyday!

Geordie – I give wrestling 5 stars out of 5!

P5d

Busy, busy, busy!
Maths
This week we have been working hard to improve our division skills. We have been doing lots of different activities to help us with this.
Ava – we did an activity where we wrote down things like sixteen divided by four is four then we wrote this is the same as four times four is sixteen. This really helped me and I really understand now. I know that if I am dividing and it is hard I can work out the sum using the times table instead.
Lily – I am much better now at setting down and working out a dividing sum this way …..

Shaun B – when I was writing out the dividing sums and times tables I noticed a pattern and now the dividing sums are much easier to do.
Health and Wellbeing
We had a great time on Thursday morning when we went to the TA Hall for wrestling. Unfortunately Mrs D forgot to take the camera so we can’t show any pictures.
Emma – we had to kneel down and face our partner then we had to both hold on tight to a space ball and wrestle it off of each other. It was great fun.
Rebecca – I thought it looked really easy but when I had a go it was actually really hard to wrestle the ball off Kelsey because she was really strong and had good balance.
On Thursday afternoon we had a rugby training session. We all had a great time and learned loads. Here are some pictures of us working hard and enjoying ourselves at the same time!

Enjoy the gala weekend and remember it’s a Monday holiday. Enjoy!!!
