Glitter Galore in P1l

Primary 1l have been getting glittertastic making things for the Christmas Fayre tomorrow.  Pre-orders for the candle holders have been very strong and tomorrow there will also be beautiful christmas tree decorations at 50p each.

In maths this week we have been looking at the number facts of 4, looking at the different ways to make 4.  Everyone is getting the hang of it and next week we will look at the number facts for 5.

We have been up to the hall to practise our Nativity and things are really starting to take shape.  Please remember costumes are to be in for Monday.

Hopefully see you all at the Fayre tomorrow.

P1b News

On Wednesday we made birthday cards to celebrate the UNCRC’s 24th birthday.  We learned that the UNCRC is an agreement between countries which makes sure children have their rights.  We were reminded about our rights and how lucky we are to have these.

This week we have been enjoying creative dance with Mrs Inness.  We have been learning to skip and gallop to music.  Mrs Inness also read the story ‘The Elf’.   During this we had to listen to the story and complete actions to music.  We are looking forward to more dance next week!

Bye for now,

It’s a Mystery in P1l

P1l are loving their ‘Mystery Box’.  Lucas, Joshua and Alfie all took the box home this week.  They put something from home inside the box and everyone else has to ask questions to find out what is hiding.  It is a lot of fun and it also helps us ask useful questions, listen to others and think carefully about what people are saying.

In maths this week we have started to look at the number facts for 2 and 3 and how adding sums can be somersaulted to make a new sum with the same answer.

Mrs Leamy asked us what we had improved this week and what we had learned and Enci had a great answer in that we had got better at tidying up!!

Today everyone got their own Book Bug bag from the Scottish Book Trust.  We have read the books in class and really enjoyed them.  On the 3rd December we have been invited to the library where we will hear the stories and then vote to see which one we like the best.  We hope you enjoy reading your books at home.

Diwali Celebrations in P1l & P1b

Primary 1b and Primary 1l have been working with Miss Henderson on the Hindu Festival of Diwali which took place a couple of weeks ago.  The children learned about Rama and Sita and the ten headed monster, Ravana who kidnapped Sita, and how the Monkey King, Hanuman saved Sita from the monster and returned her to Rama and this is the reason why Hindu’s celebrate Diwali.  We also made our own Rangoli boxes.  Hindu’s paint rangoli patterns at Diwali to welcome their goddess Lakshmi into their homes as they believe she brings good luck and happiness.  This week Mrs Jamieson helped us to make milk peda (sweets) to put into our boxes and she also made us an Indian Potato Curry to try with naan bread which some of us thought was delicious.  At home time the children were allowed to try out the peda sweets they had made.  Mrs Leamy thought they were really nice.  We would like to say a big thank you to Megan’s gran (P1l) and Isaac and Lauren’s mums (p1b) who very kindly gave up their time to come in and help us with our baking.

Next week we are going to be learning about Thanksgiving celebrations in America.

Sleepy Heads in P1l

Lots of people in P1l forgot to get dressed this morning , they came to school in their pyjamas! Thank you to everyone for their donations to Children in Need.

While we had our milk today we thought about all the things we have been learning this week and we came up with lots of things.

With Mrs Spence we were writing about the adventures of Rambling Rosie. This week she stayed with Liam and he took her to play golf then Mrs Spence took her swimming. We have working on our adding skills and using the + and = symbols. Mrs Hay came into class on Thursday and we were making sound stories.  We all had a turn of playing music and being a good audience.  We have learned all the songs from our Nativity and we made angels to go on a display in our classroom. We were being animal detectives on Thursday, we carried on our work with the story Dear Zoo and created our own page drawing an animal of our choice.  We then worked with a partner to ask questions to find out what animal they had drawn.

Well done to Callum who is Pupil of the Week and to Suvi and Megan who are on Step 4 for their excellent behaviour.

Bye from P1l

News from P1b

Every Wednesday afternoon we spend half an hour completing special activities with our buddies. This week we have been learning about 3D shapes. Our buddies helped us to make 3D shapes from net templates. We made cylinders, cubes, cones and cuboids. These are now displayed in our maths area.

On Thursday afternoons, we have outdoor P.E to develop the skills we are learning with Mr Jeffries. We are learning to use our own space and travel safely. Here are some of our thoughts: Elliot- ‘I enjoy the bubble game.’ Sofiye- ‘You’re not allowed to touch anthing incase you pop your bubble.’ Ailah- ‘You must listen to instructions.’ Isaac- ‘I like playing Tig.’

Thank you to everyone in our class for dressing up and supporting Children in Need. Everyone looked super and cosy in their Pyjamas!

Have a lovely weekend,

Our Week in P1b

On Tuesday morning, we had a shared start.  Our family members were welcome into class to complete some firework activities with us.  Here are some of our thoughts:

Amy- ‘My favourite activity was when I was drawing fireworks with chalk.’

Mia- ‘I liked playing with the playdough.’

Isaac- I liked sticking things on paper to make a bonfire.’

Ailah- ‘I was shaking the maracas to make firework noises.’

On Wednesday we had a karate taster session.   We were punching in the air and counting to ten in Japanese.  We also worked with a partner to balance and kick the air.  It was great fun!

Spooky Sights in P1l

There were some very scary sights in P1l this morning as everyone came dressed up to raise money for this years float.  Today we also had our first ‘Big Balbardie Blether’.  We all went to different classrooms to be with people from our own houses and came up with ideas on how we could improve the house system in school. It was a big thing for us all to be with new people and in new places and we all did really well. Another first this week was outdoor P.E. Thankfully it was cold but dry on Thursday afternoon and we had a good time travelling in different ways in the play ground and moving carefully in our own space. So many firsts this week, we also started to practise songs for our Nativity and we have changed our house corner into a shop.  By far the most popular choice of shop was Tesco! Here are some things we enjoyed this week.

I like our new shop in class – Enci and Jay.

I have liked colouring in this week – Katie.

Playing in the shop has been good – Callum.

I liked playing with the cars and my friends at Golden Time – Miles

I like playing in the library – Catriona

This week l have been learning new sums – Katie.

A super week for everyone in P1l – well done.

A Successful First Term in P1

Yesterday we had a fairy tale ball to celebrate the end of our class topic.  We dressed up in fancy clothes, ate some party food and played games including musical bumps and sleeping piggies.  It was great fun!

After a busy first term, we thought about some of our highlights so far.

–   Isaac enjoyed learning different letters.

–   Mia and Skye liked learning about Cinderella during our fairy tale topic.

–   Campbell’s favourite memory was when he had party food at the ball.

–   ‘I liked it when we started gym.’  Jaime- Lee

Thank you to everyone who made a model scene from your favourite fairy tale.  They look fabulous!  Have a look at your wonderful work.

 Enjoy a well deserved break,

Miss Bollen.

P1 Autumn Walk

Yesterday Primary 1 headed over to Balbardie Park for an Autumn Walk.  The children had a great time and everyone was very proud of how well they behaved.  The children were armed with plastic bags and collected lots of lovely leaves to make things with back at school. After some leaf collecting we all sat down for a well deserved biscuit before collecting some more things before heading back to school. Thank you to all the mums and grannies who came to help us, we really appreciated it.

 Primary 1

Super Shared Start in P1m!

This week we were very excited to welcome our parents and families into our classroom.  We had lots of fun working on money tasks with them.   We sorted coins, made coin rubbings, coloured in and completed giant coins, counted coin collections, played money board games and games on the smartboard.  Phew, we’ve been so busy!  We had lots of fun with our family members, playing with them and showing them what we can do.

Next week, we’re looking forward to our autumn walk on Thursday and the end of term church service on Friday.  We hope to see you there 🙂

Another Visit for P1…

This week we had another visit from Dennis the Dragon.  He left Little Red Riding Hood’s cloak and basket in our school car park.  We think he wanted us to find out all about the story of Little Red Riding Hood.  In class we made wanted posters for the wolf and discussed stranger danger. We really enjoyed decorating a basket and the challenge of making a handle strong enough to hold yummy biscuits.

Our Week in P1l

Well, on Monday Miss Henderson came into our class with a basket and red cape.  She had found it outside and immediately knew something was strange so came along to P1 to ask us about it.  As we know lots about fairytales it didn’t take us long to work out it must belong to Little Red Riding Hood and that Dennis the Dragon must have had it but dropped it. After we worked it out we listened to the story and were all very good at realising that Little Red Riding Hood should not have spoken to the wolf because he was a stranger.  Our Red Riding Hood activities continued during the week and Mrs Jamieson helped us decorate some cookies to go in baskets we decorated. On Wednesday with Mrs Spence we wrote ‘Wanted’ posters to help find the wolf and on Thursday we had a different version of the story called Little Bad Riding Hood.  She ate all the cookies on the way to Granny’s house and put stones in instead.  In the end it turned out she was a hero because the wolf ate the stones and his teeth fell out!

Our sounds this week have been ‘t’ and ‘i’ and we are doing really well with them.  Some people have started to sound out words and make up words themselves – Mrs Leamy and Mrs Spence are very proud.

Here are some of our thoughts about school:

I like doing letters and numbers – Alfie

I am looking forward to going on a trip with school – Katie

We like drawing in school – Suvi and Maisey

I like playing with the Lego – Lucas

Bye for now

P1l

Money, money, money….!

This week we have been busy learning about money.  We have been identifying coins and sorting them into different coin collections.  We have made our own 1p and 2p coins and have enjoyed making coin rubbings.

In other news, we have had another visit from Dennis the Dragon, who curiously dropped off a basket, with a red hooded cape in it.  We are currently investigating who it belongs to…..

In language we are making great progress with learning our sounds and understanding how to blend them together to read small words.  Both of our teachers are very proud of us. 🙂

The Lost Slipper

On Monday, Mrs White came to our class with a package addressed to us.  Inside the bag, was one glass slipper! Dennis wrote us a letter and asked us to find out who the slipper belonged to.

As a result, this week in class, we have been exploring the story of Cinderella.  We acted out the story using masks, made wanted posters for the owner of the glass slipper and designed outfits for a prince and Princess.

We wonder what Dennis will find next…

This week in P1l

Lots of learning in P1l this week.  Our sounds were ‘p’ and ‘a’,’ p’ is a pink quiet sound and ‘a’ is a stretchy black sound.  We are very good at reading our sounds and we have started to slide some of our sounds together to help us read words.  We have practised writing all our numbers to 10 now and lots of us can count on even further.  Dennis the Dragon has been busy again, on Monday he sent a shoe in the post!  We were very quick to work out who it belonged to and then we looked at the story of Cinderella. We had a good discussion about goodies and baddies in fairytales and we were split on Goldilocks some say good and some say bad.  The week ended with lots of cakes up in the Coffee Morning and it was great to see lots of our Mums and Dads there.

Bye for now p1l

The Dragon has been in touch with P1m again……

P1m have received a very exciting parcel.  It was a special delivery of a giant envelope.  Inside the envelope we found a letter and a shoe from the dragon!  He is looking for some help with finding out more about the girl who has lost her shoe.  We read his letter together and realised that it belongs to Cinderella.  We’ve been very busy finding all about her story, so that we can report back to him!

We’ve watched and read her story and re-told the story to each other.  We have learned some of the key words from the story, sequenced her story with picture cards, and written her story on fancy paper.  We’ve made character masks and acted out the story.  We’ve practised our counting skills on her snakes and ladder game and lots and lots more.  Phew, we’ve been soooo busy, I wonder if he’ll come back to visit us again next week?

🙂

An Exciting Visitor!

On Wednesday Miss Henderson told us that she was working in her office when she heard a flapping sound coming from outside.  Next, she saw a dragon fly past her window! To her surprise a black bag dropped down the chimney.  The label was addressed to all the children in P1.  We knew that the dragon was Dennis from Fairyland who had bumped into Goldolocks the week before!  When we opened the bag, we found lots of magic beans! We were excited to take our beans home and plant our very own bean stalks! In class, we have explored the story of Jack and the Beanstalk.  We also worked with our buddies to complete lovely beanstalk crafts!

Happy Planting!

Fairytale Fun!

On Monday we received a letter from the dragon who lives in Fairyland.  Dennis the Dragon told us that he bumped into a little girl with blonde hair in the woods.  She was crying and mumbling something about porridge.  Dennis asked us to find out about the little girl.  So, this week we have been completing lots of activities about Goldilocks. This includes writing a sorry letter to the three bears, sequencing pictures to tell the story and sorting objects by size.  We are hoping to receive another letter from the dragon next week!

 Have a lovely long weekend,

From Miss Bollen and P1b

How time flies in P1l

The first full week in primary 1 and no one fell asleep!  P1l have had a super first full week in school and everyone has coped really well.

The children have started to learn their sounds and this week we looked at m and c paying particular attention to how they make the sound with their mouth.  We use our lips for m so it is a red sound and the back of our mouth for c so it is yellow.

On Tuesday we looked at why we come to school and the children worked really well together thinking by themselves, then with a partner and finally sharing their ideas.  Lots of ideas came through but my two favourites were:

‘Becasue we get too big for Nursery so they have to build a school.’

‘So we can learn to read so that when we have our own boys and girls we can read them stories.’

On Wednesday we had Mrs Spence and we made some monsters for our ‘Monster Maths’ and owls for our ‘Tree of Knowledge.

On Thursday it was a big day getting our first reading book and l have heard a few very proud children talking about their reading and great claims of “I can read now”.

A wee reminder that reading books and reading records are to come to school everyday please.

Have a great weekend.

Bye Mrs Leamy
