Athletics Superstars!

Following our success at the Sportshall Stirling athletics festival, we were delighted to have been asked to compete in the regional finals yesterday at the Peak.

The competition was fierce however we all tried our best and came in an impressive third place!!

As you can see from the photographs above, we all had a fantastic day.

Scots Poetry Competition Finalists

Congratutions to everyone who recited their Scots poems to our class last week, the standard was fantastic!!

Yesterday was the final and Primary 5S showed themselves to be an excellent audience as they listened to children from Primaries 1 through 7 recite their poems.

A huge congratulations to the finalists from P5S – you all did a braw job and I’m so proud!

Congratulations P5S!

Primary 5S had a fantastic day at the Sportshall Stirling Athletics Festival final today and came in an impressive third place!!

The day included a range of track and field events including obstacles, running relays, speed bounce, javelin throwing and much more.

The children showed great sportsmanship and were delighted with the outcome.

Well done Primary 5S – you did DPS proud!!

Hannah’s Little Princess Haircut

One day, when my mum was getting her haircut she showed me pictures of her friend’s daughter who cut and donated her hair to the Little Princess Trust.  I decided then that I too wanted to make a difference and donate my hair to charity.

My hair was already really long (as you can see in the picture).  My mum set up a Just Giving page as, not only did I want to donate my hair but I also wanted to raise money for the charity.  I did a lot of research on the charity and shared this with my class just before Christmas. On Friday 22nd of December, when school closed for the Christmas holidays, I headed off to the hairdressers and got 9 1/2 “ of hair cut off and this was sent away to the charity along with my donation.

I set myself a target of raising £150 and couldn’t believe my eyes when I looked at my Just Giving page and saw that I had managed to raise £552!!!

I love my new shorter hairstyle (even more than I did my old hairstyle) and would definitely recommend donating, either hair or money, to the Little Princess Trust charity.By Hannah Fitzpatrick

Charity Presentations

As part of our Christmas from Miss Spiers, we are going to donate money to a charity of our choice.  We have been working in groups over the last few weeks and, using Office Create on GLOW, have worked collaboratively to make a PowerPoint informing our classmates of our chosen charity.

Today two groups presented.  James R and Freddie spoke about PADS (Perthshire Abandoned Dogs Society) and another groups spoke about the Butterfly Trust.

The Butterfly Trust are a charity who help people with Cystic Fribrosis.  We were lucky enough to be visited by Lisa Hertwig, a former pupil of Mrs Gallivans, who has CF and who had a double lung transplant just last year!

The Butterfly Trust have helped Lisa in many ways over the years by;

  • Helping her find adequate accommodation with no stairs, double glazing and central heating
  • Providing massage therapy whilst she was in hospital
  • Providing transport to and from her hospital in Edinburgh before she passed her driving test

We are inspired by the work of both of these charities and are looking forward to hearing the rest of the presentations tomorrow.

Christmas Pudding Rice Krispie Cakes

What a day we’ve had in Primary 5S!

After break we went to watch ‘Aladdin’ the pantomime in the assembly hall which was excellent. Then, after break, we visited the learning lab and made Christmas pudding rice krispie cakes.

You will need;

50g Rice Krispies, 30g raisins (optional), 100g milk chocolate, 50g butter, 30g mini marshmallows, 80g white chocolate and some red and green icing.

Method

  1. Put the butter, milk chocolate and marshmallows into a small saucepan.  Place on a medium heat and stir until the chocolate and butter have melted but the marshmallows are just beginning to melt.

  2. Pour the rice crispies into the pan and stir until well coated.  Line an egg cup, or large measuring spoon (tbs) with cling film.  Firmly press the mixture into this then remove and sit the flat side on a clean plate.  Repeat with the remaining mixture and chill until firm.

  3. Melt the white chocolate in the microwave.  Spoon a little chocolate over the top of each pudding before topping with little holly leaves and berries made from the icing.

Despite some of our mixture not binding properly we all had fun (and, as you can see from the picture below, didn’t let anything go to waste).   Thank you to the groups who were very kind and shared their mixture with others.

Aloo Fry

Keeping with our Indian themed kitchen experiences, this week Primary 5S made Aloo fry (South Indian style fried potatoes).

The recipe was quite simple but the taste wasn’t – we all agreed it was delicious!  If you want to make some yourself follow the instructions below.

You will need;

4 potatoes, oil and lots of spices (ground cumin, ground turmeric, chilli powder, ground coriander and garam masala which is a spice blend).

Process;

  1. First peel and cube your potatoes then keep these in a bowl of water for 20 minutes
  2.  Put 2 tbsp of oil into a hot pan and place on a medium heat
  3.  Carefully add your potatoes, mix to ensure all are coated in oil and leave to saute for 7-8 minutes
  4. Next add 1/2 tsp of turmeric, 1/2 tsp of chilli powder, 1/2 tsp ground coriander and 1/2 tsp of cumin to your potatoes and stir well to ensure all potatoes are coated in the spices
  5. Fry your potatoes until they are golden and crispy
  6. Add 1/2 tsp of garam masala and cook for a few minutes to allow flavors to blend
  7. Serve and enjoy!
