Weekly check-in

Morning everyone, how are we all?

Here is your weekly check-in. Please leave a message by 3pm tomorrow (Friday) saying hello or letting us know what you have been getting up to this week. If you would prefer, you can email me instead (gw16pantonjennifer@glow.sch.uk).

This week I have mostly been reading (again!) Mr P and I have a Zoom quiz night with our friends every two weeks and it’s our turn to host! So we have been busy trying to think of good questions, we still have another week to perfect it! If you have any good questions, let me know!

I look forward to hearing from everyone.

J.K. Rowling

Good morning everyone. I hope you are all enjoying the nice weather we are having again!

I have good news for the J.K. Rowling fans… she has published a new book called The Ickabog. Now, she won’t be releasing the book until November but she is giving you a chance to read it before then. Every day, a new chapter will be published here:

The Ickabog

She released the first chapter yesterday so if you start today you will have two chapters to read. She has also started an illustration competition where the winners will have their pictures included in the printed book! All the information can be found here:

The Ickabog competition

Once you’ve read the new chapter, you could have a go at drawing the picture to go with it. Having your own picture in a published book would be pretty cool wouldn’t it?!

If you choose to read it, let me know what you think of it!

Home learning week beginning 25/05/20

Hello everyone, I hope you enjoyed your long weekend!

As always, tasks are only suggestions for you, you don’t need to complete everything if you don’t want to.

Writing: I have another competition for writing this week. This time there is a chance for you to win a filming kit for your school. Sounds pretty good to me! You need to create a short video (between 30 seconds and 2 minutes) that describes your own lockdown story. Now, this can be a factual story in the form of a News Report or a Vlog (so you will be describing your own experience)  or you can write your own creative story. The competition closes on the 29th June.

This link provides all the information about the competition:

Keep Connected competition

You do not need to completely stick to this format but it may help with your planning:

keep connected planning sheet

Here is some more information that may help when you come to film your report:

report plan

Please read the full Terms and Conditions of the competition before starting to film. It is important that your entry meets these requirements and does not infringe on any copyright laws. For example, your video must not:

  • Contain commercial names or trademarks owned by others or advertise or promote any brand or product of any kind,without permission, or contain any personal identification, such as license plate numbers, personal names, email addresses or street addresses;
  • Contain copyrighted materials owned by others (including photographs, sculptures, paintings and other works of art or images published on or in websites, television, movies or other media or musical ‘samples’) without permission

Terms and conditions

I would suggest that you concentrate on the planning side this week, and perhaps even writing a script. You could leave the actual filming to next week, it’s a big project so I think it’s best to do it over two weeks.

If you are going to enter the competition, please send your entry to me (gw16pantonjennifer@glow.sch.uk) and I will send your entry in.

Topic: How did you get on with remembering the countries in Europe? This week you can build on what you learned last week and learn some of the capital cities of Europe! I bet you’re confident with some, like France, but what about the capital of Finland?! Use this video to help you find out and remember the capital cities of Europe:

Try filling in this worksheet. You should add other countries/capitals to the list.

European countries and capital cities

You can play the same game as last week, but select ‘capitals’ instead.

Have a go at this game to assess how many capital cities you know:

Art: I’m pretty excited about this art activity, and I think you will all like it too.  Can you recreate a scene from a movie? I have included an example of me doing one, hopefully you can work out which movie it’s from!

Here’s another example I found which might give you some inspiration too…

If you have a go at this, please send me your pictures as I would love to see what you come up with!

Nature in your Neighbourhood

Competition #2 for this week!

This great competition comes from the film club IntoFilm and is open for everyone aged 5-19 to complete with the technology you have at home, for a chance to win a home filmmaking bundle worth £300, and two runners up will each receive a year’s subscription to Netflix!

Here’s what IntoFilm say about how the competition will work:

“We’re asking young filmmakers to celebrate their surroundings by creating a 3-5 minute live-action or animated short that documents something they’ve noticed or appreciated while spending more time in their local area. Whether it’s a school playground, local park or even a view from a window, we want to see it.

Shorts can be shot using mobile phones, tablets or cameras, and our handy filmmaking resources are a great place to start.

Films should be submitted online along with a completed entry form by the closing date of Friday 19th June.

Due to your age, you will need to get a parent/carer to complete part of the entry form for you.

Full details of the Nature in your Neighbourhood Competition can be found using the link below.

Nature in your Neighbourhood

This is also a big project so you can continue on with it next week too.

P.E: Watch this video and see if you can challenge yourself! I have included the scorecard below too. Good luck! You can even try it again later in the week to try and beat your own score.

Mental Health Awareness Week

Hi everyone, this week is Mental Health Awareness Week and the theme this year is kindness. Some of you may have already seen the message on the school app, but we would love to see pictures of your acts of kindness. You can either comment on this post or send me an email with your picture.

This is a very tough time for everyone, you need to also look after yourself and be kind to yourself. I have included some things that you might want to complete.

Weekly check-in

Hi everyone! How are we all this week?

Remember, we have a short week this week so if you could leave me a message to let me know how you are by Thursday, that would be great. If you want to email me instead, you can do that too.

So far this week I have been mostly reading my book which has been great! My current book has 560 pages and I think it’s one of the longest books I have ever read! I found out it has been made into a film too so when I’m finished I can watch that and compare. The book is always better than the film though, right?!

I look forward to hearing from you all!

Home learning week beginning 18/05/20

Hello everyone, I hope you had a lovely weekend. It’s another short week this week so there will be no work set for Friday. We also have a holiday the following Monday so next week’s blog post will go up on Tuesday morning.

Remember, tasks are suggestions only! Do what you feel comfortable with and if you have any questions you can leave me a comment and I will get back to you.

timetable 18-05

AA: This week I have set some revision tasks on place value.

Literacy:

Each group should try and find some time to read a book of your choice.

AA: This week I’m going to give you three chapters to do, but that’s because it’s the last three chapters. Feels like we’ve been doing this book for ages doesn’t it?! I would suggest reading chapter 35 first and then completing the activity for that chapter, as some of the questions involve predictions.

Nowhere Emporium ch 35-37

FF: Pobble365 – try the activities for your chosen day.

Tell Me No Lies – These activities are from BBC Bitesize. You can listen to extracts of a book and use your inference skills to answer the questions. There are 3 different activities for you to try.

CC: https://www.pobble365.com/ – try the activities for your chosen day.

Birds in your garden – this is a comprehension activity based on the birds that you might see in your garden. If you finish this, you could maybe look for other wildlife in you garden/outside. Could you research an animal/insect you find and create some of your own questions?

Spelling:

Gold: You have the suffix ‘ness’.  ‘ness’ at the end of a word means ‘the state of being’. If you take the word ‘kind’ as an example, when you add ‘ness’ it means the quality of being kind or friendly. If you show kindness, it means you are doing something to show your are kind. Can you think of at least 4 more words with the suffix ‘ness’? Other activities could include – finding the definition using a dictionary, test an adult, use your words in a paragraph, create a wordsearch.

Silver: You have the phoneme ‘ow’. This week, practise your words by creating a wordsearch, testing an adult, bubble writing, writing your words in a paragraph or finding the meanings using a dictionary.

Bronze: This week you have the phoneme ‘ch’. You could test an adult, create a wordsearch, use your words in sentences, bubble writing.

Writing:

This week you should concentrate on using your plan to create your story about the doorway. You should include at least 3 paragraphs.

Doorways

Topic: This week, we are concentrating on Geography. There are 195 countries in the world. Can you name them all?

Just kidding, we’ll start off a bit smaller. In Europe there are 44 countries. Your job this week is to name as many of them as you can.

This video might help you:

Remember, the Czech Republic is now known as Czechia and Macedonia is now known as North Macedonia. There are a few sneaky ones in there too… there is another country within Italy. Can you find out what it is called?

This game also helps you learn where each country in Europe is:

Europe puzzle

You can choose the easy or the hard version, whatever you prefer.

Once you’re confident enough, test yourself to see how many countries you can name. You have 8 minutes to complete it.

Countries of Europe

P.E: Find a partner and try a game of Battleships. Watch the video below for instructions.

ICT:

Recipe Card

Follow the link above for this week’s online tutorial in coding HTML and CSS. Your challenge is to create a webpage for your favourite recipe. I know that many of you have been busy with home baking recently, this will allow you to display the ingredients and method for one of your recipes. If you email the link for your project to me I can post them on the blog at the end of the week then you can all have a go at trying out some new recipes at home!

If you would like to save your project so that you can return to it later, then you can register for a free Raspberry Pi account. Sign up by clicking on ‘sign in’ in the green box to the left of the tutorial screen. Good luck!

Art:  This week, find a picture from a newspaper or a magazine. It can be of anything, but your job is to imagine what the rest of the picture would look like, so you’re extending the picture. I’ve attached an example, I used a pair of Converse as my picture and then drew the rest. I did mine really quickly but you should take your time and use colour if you can.
