Kerry’s story

“Come on Lizzie wake up it  is a new start for us all” said  Lizzie’s Dad cheerily “But its only 9 o’clock in the morning” replied Lizzie “no its twelve” said dad “Oh yea” said Lizzie smugly “just get dressed” said dad  So Lizzie got dressed and ran down the stairs. She fell down and banged her arm. Her brother told her mum and dad who called the ambulance because she had broken her arm and fainted.

When Lizzie woke up in an Ambulance with her mum. “The doctor says you can go home again just in time for the feast on turkey and roast tatties, your favourite”.

New Years Eve

Seeing the blazing banging fireworks on new years eve. All the different colours red, green, blue, orange and yellow. After fireworks we drank fizzing coke and had tomato soup. Then we had ice cream and raspberry sauce. I was so exited! I was imagining after the bells coming from the radio and all the hugs and kisses du du du! Then I thought it would not be so bad after all. Then it finaly came I could hear the radio music playing bells and silent night we had to sing songs.  It was MIDNIGHT then it was a new start for us all in 2013!

In Burravoe

In Burravoe it is very different because everyone knows everyone. In Burravoe school everyone is friendly and helps other people. It is good living on an island only 3 miles away from the sea. In Burravoe we can’t just pop to the theme park because it is in Aberdeen which is almost 300 miles away on the Scottish mainland.

Life in Burravoe

Life in Burravoe is really great because its not very busy at night and also they are some places   without street lights so it’s easy to get to sleep. In Burravoe you can’t just pop to the Mareel (which is are art center)    and pop back again we have to organize the ferries and get the tickets and lots more. It’s good living in Burravoe because the nearest swimming pool is 9 miles away and it is a community  pool  .

Everyone here is friendly and helpful and doesn’t mind lending a hand.  In Burravoe you can’t just drive a couple of miles and be at a theme park are nearest theme park is 267 miles from Lerwick which is the only town in the Shetland Isles.

In Burravoe thy are no taxis or cabs so its quiet because they are not much traffic  . We live on a island so all of us live near the sea.

This is Burravoe Pier

This is Burravoe Pier where people used to launch their boats now we have a modern marina.

The biggest building here is Burravoe Hall.

I like living Burravoe because I love Burravoe primary school and all my class mates.

How Burravoe Is Different

Burravoe is on an island called Yell .Burravoe is a little place compared to Lerwick and Aberdeen. Burravoe only has one shop it is very small. Lerwick is a town on mainland Shetland with about two small supermarkets, one called Tesco and the other one is called the Co-op and about twenty other shops. In Aberdeen which is a city on mainland Scotland, there are about one-hundred shops and resterants.  To get to Lerwick you have to go on a ferry that takes about twenty minutes. To get to Aberdeen you need to go on a twelve hour ferry all night, it is not in Shetland.

This is a picture of the ferry we need to get to Lerwick.

Life in Burravoe

Here in Burravoe I have to say it isn’t that handy  because its so remote,  to get to our nearest cinema  in Lerwick from here is a twenty minuet ferry and a half a hour drive and that’s the same for our Tesco market and its quite small.

This is a photo of the ferry.

You won’t even guess how far our nearest McDonald’s is; it is 265 miles and its in Aberdeen! To get to Aberdeen is a thirteen hour ferry over night. Up here we don’t have any amusement parks or fairs but one time,  in roughly 2006, the circus came up and my mum, granny and I went to it.

We live on an island which means we live by the sea. We have a small marina and  Bradley’s  (my brother) and my dad owns a  big  red wellboat called the Norholm which sits in sometimes.

This is a photo of the Norholm

Here we do lots of internet shopping because we don’t have the kind of shops like Next, Debenhams, M&S so on.
We have a volunteer run community food shop. Kerry and Abby’s granny works in it. It is small.
We have a community hall that we have our youth club in, there are lots of events held in there too like weddings, birthdays, da tar barrel and more. Da tar barrel is an event that men including my dad pulls a burning barrel across the road from the school to the Burravoe Hall and then we go inside the hall and I played my fiddle which is a violin in Shetland dialect which a lot of people from the whole of Shetland including me speak.

Life In Burravoe

Burravoe is a small village; it has got a hall, a primary school, a church and a small community shop. We have great views all around Burravoe. Burravoe is very quiet and at night if you live in a city, it would be loud and noisy but if you live in Burravoe then it is quite quiet.

The Burravoe Hall is where we have Youth Club on a Wednesday; we have parties like Christmas Parties, a Halloween party and a Birthday Party.

This is Burravoe School; this is where I go to school with 11 others. Our head teacher is called Ms Breyley , Our  teaching assistant is called  Jennifer Odie , our supervisor is Suzanne Pugh (My Mum) and our cook is called Elsie  Johnson.

We have a community shop, where you can by milk, bread, eggs, cheese, chocolate and lots more. It is near the school so if we run out of food we could pop down to get some food. This Mary Jane is a volunteer who works at the shop.

This is St Colmans church; we have our Christmas Concerts in there. The church is over the road from the school.

In Ulsta there is a ferry and a shop. Ulsta is about eight kilometers from Burravoe School.

This is the Ulsta ferry; It goes from Ulsta – Toft. It takes 20 minutes on the ferry. There are two ferries, there is an upstairs for you to go up and sit down and have a drink of water.

When you get off the ferry at Ulsta you can see the Ulsta shop. You can also get petrol from the Ulsta shop.

Norholm

The Norholm is my dads wellboat.  It is a boat which carries salmon to fish cages. It is a big boat that needs and has 8 crew all together. The school went on the boat and got a tour from my dad and mum.The engine room is where the pumps and the engine are. The wheelhouse where you start the boat and steer her. She doesn’t have a steering wheel. You just use levers. They are a big chair that controls the crane. The crane is used for picking up barrels of salmon and giving it to the helicopter that collects the salmon. There are a bedroom for everyone who works there. My dad is the skipper of the boat so he gets the bedroom with the window. In the sitting room there are a TV, a fish tank, a DVD player, a table and a big couch. In the Gally they are a cooker, cupboards and a fridge. I have had a couple of sleepovers in the Norholm with my brother Bradley. My mum sits in our office that is in our house to pay the boys who work on the Norholm.
