The Lewis Chessmen

On Wednesday we went to see The Lewis Chessman at the Shetland Museum.

The Lewis Chessmen were found in Lewis. They are about 1000 years old. Historians guess that they were made in Trondheim in Norway because The Vikings could have gone to Greenland to get the walrus tusk to make The Lewis Chessmen. They were made from Walrus tusk, whale teeth or shark teeth.

Yvonne and Lucy gave us a tour and told us about The Lewis Chessman. We also drew our favourite chess piece; my favourite was a pawn that had a fancy pattern on it. Lewis Chessmen pictures. The Lewis chessman pieces were in glass cases so that they couldn’t be broken. When we were in groups and us big ones were talking to Yvonne and Lucy, there were some plastic figures of them! The plastic replicas looked exactly like the real Chessmen!

Lewis Chessmen

On Wednesday we went to the Shetland Museum to see the Lewis Chessmen. In the entrance there was giant chess set so James and I had a quick game then everyone sat on a bench and Yvonne, the museum education officer, asked the order that the pieces came in.

After the intro we went to Gadderie for the tour. We looked at the map of Scotland and told Yvonne where Lewis is because that’s where they were found.

Next we looked at some Chessmen, The King was angry, the Queen was thinking or bored, the Bishop had a tight hold of is cane, the Knight on the horse had his feet in the stirrups and had spurs on his boots, the Berserkers was biting his shield because he took drugs and went berserk and the pawn had no face because they weren’t so important so they had patterns instead. The Chessmen were made of walrus tusk but the spares were shark or whale teeth.

Next we got a clipboard and a pencil and had to draw our favourite Chess piece; I drew a pawn and learned that drawing a Lewis Chessman is really hard.

Next the big ones went into the Auditorium and the little ones went into the learning room. Before we started and we got carried away by a high up door.  We were looking at close up pictures of some Chessmen. Lucy, the Researcher, asked questions about what we think, wonder, know and feel about the Chessmen. At the end we all got to make things! There was card, cards, Crayolas and scissors.

Science Challenge

http://player.vimeo.com/video/19838806

Mr Eldridge at http://www.hawesps.posterous.com said on a comment ” why does a coin always fall of a lemon in a bowl of water?” we decided to find out. First we put the lemon in the bowl and found some coins and gathered round the bowl. It was difficult but we tried and tried then I got a flat Discovery boat coin to see if that worked but no. Someone said “would an orange work?” so we fetched an orange and no, that didn’t work. It didn’t work because the lemon was round and kept rolling over when the coin went on, even the slightest wobble made the lemon roll over.

Science results

I was doing a science test to see how the sound travelled over a distance. This is what I used: a wireless, some sticky notes, a pencil a decibel meter and a long long space. I put the sticky notes on the floor every 2 metres of the long long space. I put the wireless to a scruffely noise and walked to each sticky note and wrote down how many decibels the wireless was making useing the decibel meter. I had recorded the noise so I printed of a graph and the noise went down like it should. I think it went good but next time I will not make to loud foot steps and not cough.

Science results for our sound test

We were set a task to see how sound travels over distance. What we did was one of us stood at the main door holding a buzzer and the other one of us walked back every metre with the decibel measurer. We stuck sticky notes at the end of each metre and wrote what the number of decibels was measured there. The highest the decibel measurer could go was a hundred and the lowest it could go was fifty. At the beginning which was 1 metre away from the buzzer the decibels measured seventy decibels. When we got to the fire exit (which was fifteen metres away from the buzzer) the decibel measurer measured fifty decibels. Our science experiment worked! We found that the further away we got the quieter the sound seamed to us.

Next time we will try to remember not to walk to loud.

Collaborative Roman story (from slave’s point of view)

Being a Slave

“Coming Brydon” shouted a slave called Lucy that looked after the villa, she was getting Brydon a drink of water. He was very demanding….   “Hurry up Lucy” called Brydon with a snappy voice. “Get this villa clean in 10 minutes or else” Brydon squabbled.

There was only one problem the villa was too big to clean in 10 minutes for one slave “To do this you need 12 slaves” Lucy panted. This made Brydon really angry so he punished Lucy by whipping her with a stick while fixing the bedroom door at the same time. Once that was done Brydon decided to make mosaic so he called on Lucy to mix up the mortar with her bare feet while he got colored cubes of glass.

Then they heard a crumbling noise coming from the bath it was the bath flooding, so Brydon shoved Lucy in to investigate AAAAaaaaaaaaa SPLOSH! Brydon chucked in a lump of lead which Lucy put in the hole. When Lucy emerged from the water she saw her master Brydon sitting on the roof.

Brydon was planning to land on top of Lucy when he came down from the roof, so he closed his eyes and jamp but he completely missed Lucy and was heading for the bath AAAAaaaaaaaaa SPLOSH! Lucy was laughing like pig. So Brydon got out of the bath and fired her into the mud and told her that she had to clean up herself and the bathroom while he slept.

Lucy had a plan she would sneak up to Brydon while he was asleep and pour some mud over him then she ran away through fields but got tiered and fell asleep James dragged Lucy back to Brydon’s villa. When they got to the villa Brydon was so angry that he made up an even worse punishment “Clean this villa from head to toe, no food until it is done” Lucy cleaned the villa in 10 minutes plus one second.

I think you made our story very detailed but next time If James woke you he therefore didn’t need to drag you.BS

I have changed the piece where James drags Lucy back to the villa. I quite like the story because it has funny bits in it like when Lucy gets fired into the mud and when Brydon jumps into the pool.LB

Collaborative Roman Story (from rich person’s point of view)

Being a Rich Person

A long time ago, 2000 years ago, in a villa lived a rich person called Brydon and slave called Lucy. “Bring me a drink of water” commanded Brydon. So Lucy got him a drink of water and he drunk it. The slave was very good at working.

Lucy was commanded to clean the whole Villa in 10 Minuits, but there was too big to clean in ten Minuits. “You need 12 slaves to do this” panted Lucy. As a punishment Lucy was whipped with a stick and had to fix the door to the bedroom.

Brydon was laying mosaics and Lucy was mixing the mortar, made from lime stone, with no shoes!

Once he had finished a there was a bubbling noise coming from the bathroom. It was the bath flooding, so Brydon shoved Lucy in to investigate. aaaaarrr BLOSH! Brydon chucked in a block of led and Lucy put it in the hole. Brydon sat on the low bit of the roof and Lucy spotted him. Lucy yelled for him to come down. So he jumped down with the intention to hit Lucy but misses and fell in the bath. BLOSH! Lucy laughed like a pig. So Brydon picked her up and fired into the mud.

So Lucy had to clean the whole bathroom and herself while Brydon slept peacefully. Lucy sprayed Brydon, while he was asleep, in mud and ran, ran, ran away through fields and jamp over walls but she ran out of puff and was so tired she pulled herself back to Brydon. When Lucy came back Brydon was so mad that Lucy couldn’t eat until the whole villa was spotless.

“And that concludes our 2000 year old story and she had to clean the villa in 40 minuts plus 1 second ”

Some of it does not make sense like “but there was too big to clean in 10 minutes” and “the slave was very good at doing”. LB

I checked myself and those bits don’t make sense so I changed them and I think the story line was good. BS

I thought your story was excellent I especially like when you throw Lucy in the gutter I couldn’t find any mistakes but next time you could find out more fact and put it in but you don’t have to. JR

The Gladiator and the Mouse

One day in Rome at the coliseum there was a fight going on between a gladiator and a lion. The gladiator had his trustee trident and his net he fought the lion for about an hour but then the lion jumped at him but the gladiator stabbed it with the trident. The lion was dead just like the 25 lions and tigers he killed. Everybody was terrified of him and nobody wanted to get on the wrong side of him. His master was called Whimbrel. Whimbrel only fed his gladiator the finest of foods like ox and chicken and fish. He had been in about 200 fights and 90 against other gladiators nobody could defeat him. Three men scoured the earth to find fearers creatures but nobody could find any.  They even tried on the under the sea but by the time they got them back to the Coliseum they were dead.  Once they completely ran out of animals and there wasn’t enough time to get another one but then a little mouse scuttled up behind him when the gladiator turned feet he turned round he saw the mouse and jumped on to his fate full trident and screamed get it away from me and the mouse scuttled away and the gladiators head got chopped off for being a coward and his trident given to a rich man called Jamulas. A few days later the power full leader Brydoonkules held a ceremony for the gladiator and spoke to Jamulas and the person who got the trident and Luceos long for Lucy his slave and Kakulos and chlottiost our friends.

After a while the leader Brydoonkules said come on Luceos its time to trim up my toenails and all the friends said goodbye.

I think you didn’t need to put the names long and short but good story line because it is very interesting. BS

I think Brydons advice was very useful and I am glad about my writing because I did quite a lot of writing and I got it done on time and next time I could have more paragraphs and punctuation.JR

Chinese New Year

We made lanterns for Chinese New Year because that’s one of the things they do at their festival. We each made one. Each one had a different style.  We made them out of cardboard and stuck bits on or cut bits off.  We didn’t put candles in them for a fire hazard. Everybody enjoyed doing it. Some people decided to make it out of wire but then decided it was too hard in the time we had because first you had to make the shape and then cover it in some sort of red paper so every body made it out of card. We hung them all up for decoration.
