WEEK 3 – PRIMARY 1 – LEARNING (B)LOG

This week we have enjoyed writing using Viking Runes, playing in the galley boat, making clay Viking Longhouses, watching ‘Gudrun: The Viking Princess’ and drawing and painting Viking people.

We have been learning about length and measurement, practising all the phonics we have learned so far, making a toy with Mr Rose which required elastic energy and sharing storysacks with the secondary pupils.

Finally, today we held our toy sale in class. We were really busy organising for the sale and helping set up the class with assistance from Primary 6. The sale was a huge success and we raised £132.20.

NEW YEAR & NEW TERM FOR P1

Happy New Year everybody! We were all excited coming back to school and it was super to hear everybody’s Christmas news.

We learned a new sound – ‘x’ and played a game where we had to guess the animal x-ray. We also learned about symmetry and created symmetrical pictures.

We started our mini topic of ‘Up Helly Aas in Shetland’ and have really enjoyed playing in our galley shed with wood, construction toys, books and looking at the jarl squad suits and accessories on display.

We had a super visit from Mr Rose who learned us about balance, stability and gravity. We made tightrope walker toys which we loved trying to see if they could balance on lots of things in class.

Angela showed us the original Jarl shield from 1987. She was the Jarl the following year, perhaps Ruby might follow in her mum’s footsteps one day.

P2/3 Viking Gods Presentations

Today P2/3 presented their powerpoints about a Viking God to the class. Primary 7 helped them to make these last week. Every group did a great job, and were able to answer questions and receive feedback when they were finished. It was very interesting to learn what everyone had managed to find out. Big well done to P2/3 and big thanks again to P7!

P2/3 Topic work with P7

Today P7 came through to our classroom to help the P2/3s do some topic work. Our class split into 9 groups, and with the help of a P7, each group researched a different Viking God. We spent 20 minutes looking for interesting facts, and for the second 20 minutes, P7 showed P2/3 how to make a PowerPoint. By the end of topic time we managed to get all 9 PowerPoints saved for the P2/3s to present in class next week. It was great to see everyone working so well together. Thanks a lot to the very helpful Primary 7s!

Primary 1 and 2 – Viking Topic

As our Viking topic comes to an end here is a selection of photos to show what the Primary 1 and 2 class have been busy doing. It includes our visit to Lerwick to see Up Helly Aa, helping to make our own Viking longship which Mrs Nicolson’s son built for us, visits from our very own Vikings and one called Thorfinn Sigurdsson, taking part in Aith Up Helly Aa with Primary 2/3 and making Viking longships and longhouses for our displays in class.

Today P2/3 organised a mini Up Helly Aa for the primary and nursery to come and watch. We made shields, hemlets, torches and Mr Burke even built us a galley! We had a great time singing the Up Helly Aa song, roaring like Vikings and watching the galley burn.

P3 visit to Nesting UHA

On Friday the 10th of February, Primary 3 visited Nesting Primary school to see their Up Helly Aa day. We had the chance to listen to the Jarl Squad sing their songs, and even got to try on their shields and helmets! After that we got to go outside to see the galley. We were even allowed to go for a ride in it! After all that Primary 3 had a chance to play in the school grounds. We all had lots of fun and Primary 3 voted it a 10/10 visit!
