P1/2 made hog houses

We used guidance from the RSPB on how to make a ‘hog house’ for hedgehogs then split the class into 2 groups.  Each group designed and made their house.

We needed to make the box waterproof, make a door for hedgehogs to get in and out, thought of a name for each house then designed pictures and signs to go on the house.

We carried the houses up next to the den among the trees and put a weight on top so they didn’t blow away.  We finally filled the hog homes with straw to keep hedgehogs warm and dry while they sleep.

We thought they looked pretty good and we can’t wait to see if any hedgehogs come to stay in them!

PRIMARY 2 PICNIC

What a busy time we’ve had in Primary 2 preparing for our special visitors!

Well done Primary 2 for preparing the menu and writing out the invitations for Primary 1.  We made chocolate crispies and fairy cakes and really enjoyed baking them.  Everybody worked hard and took their time to make the really yummy food.

Here’s what Primary 1 had to say about the picnic:

“I liked the cakes”    “I liked the gummy worms”   “I liked the Haribos”   “It was the best picnic EVER!”  “It was good that they had healthy food”    “I liked playing with the primary 2s in their class”    “Primary 2 were great bakers!”    “Thank you very much primary 2”

PRIMARY 1 LEARNING (B)LOG – WEEK 6

This week in Primary 1 we have learned about teddy bears.  Paddington Bear came all the way from Peru to Shetland and is going to stay with each of us for 2 nights and hopefully have lots of fun adventures.

We wrote about our favourite toy and carefully chose the right coloured paint to paint a picture of the toy.

Mr Rose was in class on Tuesday and made wind powered toys with us.

We have been thinking about  numbers to 20 and also using a number line for addition.

We got our first blended phonic ‘sh’ and have been thinking about things that have that sound in it and also practising writing it.

We have had a number of visitors this week.  Sami who is a French teacher came in to see us on Monday, Mr Lei was in on Wednesday telling us all about the Chinese New Year and told us a story about the animals in the Chinese zodiac.  Then finally, on Wednesday we were really lucky to meet Mrs Simpson who was the first female Guizer Jarl in Shetland and came in to show us her suit and show us lots of photos from her Up Helly Aa.  We all really enjoyed meeting her.

P1 LEARNING (B)LOG

This week we learned about Spotty 7, ‘g’ and ‘o.’  We are still learning about space and making some space crafts.

This week we have enjoyed making our space rocket and we loved getting our new outdoor suits.  We also enjoyed baking and eating Max’s birthday cake.

Next week we will have all new play activities and learning 2 new sounds and a new number in Number Zoo.

Story Spinners with P2/3

This week P2/3 have used ‘Story Spinners’ to help them create interesting stories. Primary 2 had to get a character and setting to write about, while Primary 3 also had to think about characteristics, props and keywords! We spend some time coming up with ideas for stories based on the information everyone had been given. After this thinking time, we used story planners to start to think about what we want to happen at the start, middle and end. I can’t wait to read the finished stories next week!

3 times table fortune tellers!

Today P3 started learning their 3 times table. They worked in groups of 4, and followed instructions to make a 3 times table fortune teller! We managed to come up with lots of different ways to play with the fortune teller, and everyone did a fantastic job of explaining their rules. I was really impressed with everyone, especially for how well they worked together to follow the tricky instructions!

Making shields for the Norwick Up Helly Aa

This year Primary 3 were asked to make the shields for Mr Spence’s Norwick Up Helly Aa galley. We had a great time creating our designs and then painting the shields. We even got a chance to use them today in our own school Up Helly Aa!

Primary 3 would like to say a big good luck to Mr Spence, and thank him for letting us play a part in his big day! 🙂
