Something fishy going on!

Today Mrs Moffat  came in with lots of different types of fish because her husband works on a whitefish boat. She came in with lots of fish such as brides groom (dragonet), plaice, lump sucker , monkfish and many more.

Brides groom is a poisonous type of fish that has a fin on its back which has a few big poisonous spikes. We learned lots about fish around Shetland. By Shona and Catherine P7

WEEK 3 – PRIMARY 1 – LEARNING (B)LOG

This week we have enjoyed writing using Viking Runes, playing in the galley boat, making clay Viking Longhouses, watching ‘Gudrun: The Viking Princess’ and drawing and painting Viking people.

We have been learning about length and measurement, practising all the phonics we have learned so far, making a toy with Mr Rose which required elastic energy and sharing storysacks with the secondary pupils.

Finally, today we held our toy sale in class.  We were really busy organising for the sale and helping set up the class with assistance from Primary 6.  The sale was a huge success and we raised £132.20.

NEW YEAR & NEW TERM FOR P1

Happy New Year everybody!  We were all excited coming back to school and it was super to hear everybody’s Christmas news.

We learned a new sound – ‘x’ and played a game where we had to guess the animal x-ray.  We also learned about symmetry and created symmetrical pictures.

We started our mini topic of ‘Up Helly Aas in Shetland’ and have really enjoyed playing in our galley shed with wood, construction toys, books and looking at the jarl squad suits and accessories on display.

We had a super visit from Mr Rose who learned us about balance, stability and gravity.  We made tightrope walker toys which we loved trying to see if they could balance on lots of things in class.

Living things topic

This week Mr. Rose the primary science teacher came in Primary 6 and 7 and started our new topic on living things ! He told us about vertebrates and invertebrates and how vertebrates have bones and invertebrates have none! He also told us about the extinct bird the dodo and how dodo’s didn’t have any predators so when the humans came they didn’t know to run away and humans ended up killing all the dodo’s on Earth!

We love when Mr. Rose comes in, it is very interesting!

Primary 1 Learning Log, Week 5

This week we have enjoyed making and playing in our new cake shop, finishing our paper mache space helmets, making oxygen backpacks with junk, singing number songs and our Christmas show songs with Primary 2.  We also enjoyed Mandarin with Mr Lei and Fun Fit with Jacqui.

We have been been getting really good at sounding out words using all the sounds/letters we have got so far.  We were introduced to Tiger 10 and have written our weekend news on our own.

Next week we will learn our final number from Number Zoo and move on to the next group of letters in Jolly Phonics.

FIRST WEEK OF TERM 2 IN PRIMARY 1

We have started to learn about adding.  We know that you have 2 numbers and you put them together and see how many it makes.

We have enjoyed learning about all the astronauts that have been in space and on the moon, making little astronauts, the sand pit, junk models, maxi-fun and playing with the pipets.

We are learning about Space this term.  We are looking forward to learning about the planets and making our big space rocket.  We will also be learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

Roald Dahl Day and our school trip

This week we had a Roald Dahl day. We dressed up as characters from the books and had lots of fun in the library. Some of the activities were a Roald Dahl inspired treasure hunt, there was a snozzcumber stew where we had to fish for 6 counters while blindfolded and we had 30 seconds and there was also a Roald Dahl book quiz. We also made Roald Dahl inspired drinks. It was lots of fun!

We also went on a school trip to the observatory in Lerwick  and the Sound gospel hall. We learned they had to set of a weather balloon at 12am  and again at 12pm. It cost £80 per balloon, so that’s £160 a day which means they spend £58400 a year. At the sound gospel hall we learned a bit about a different stories in the Bible at each station and then do a quiz about what we had learned. It was also lots of fun!

Mr Rose in P2/3

For the last 6 weeks Mr Rose has been visiting P2/3 and teaching them all about materials, which is our science topic this term. He was able to show them lots of different types of materials, and we even got to do some experiments to test for different properties! We had some great discussions about where different materials come from, and the importance of being able to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle!
