PRIMARY 1/2 DAY OUT TO BURRA

The sun might not have been shining, but the weather did not hamper excitement from the pupils in primary 1 and 2 today, as they set off on their day out to Burra.

Our brilliant bus driver George, assisted by some very knowledgeable navigators in the front seat, drove us to Burra and firstly dropped us off at ‘The Hen Hoose’ where Wendy runs her Burra Bears business from.  She showed us inside her workshop, all the knitwear and fabrics she uses to make the bears and also the processes required for the finished product.  We saw the 3 different sizes of bears she makes and we collected Mrs Moffat’s bear she had had made.

Next, we walked over to ‘The Outpost’ where Margaret met us and we got to see emus, tortoises, goats, rabbits, pigs and wallabies.  We got to feed the animals and the bairns were highly amused at how the goats and pigs fought over the food.

We then followed Margaret to the Bridge End Hall where we enjoyed our packed lunches and had time for games and free play.

George then drove us to Bannamin beach where we spent a lovely afternoon paddling in the sea (brrrr!), finding interesting objects, climbing up among the big stones and playing on the beach.  After a fair amount of “de-sanding” our feet, we got packed up and headed back to the bus.

We had a super day in Burra and would like to say special thanks to George, Margaret Inskster and our helpers Julie, Caroline, Jacqui, Catherine and Carla.

Week 3 in Primary 1

In Primary 1 this week we have learned our new phonic blend – ng.  We were strongmen and strongwomen and made the sound as we lifted up the VERY heavy weight! 🙂

Within our topic of Journeys, we were learning about directions.  We learned how to tell our left from our right by finding the ‘L’ on our left hand then went outside to give directions to each other.

We learned about North, South, East and West and Mr Spence came in with a very old compass and 4 smaller handheld ones.  We went outside and found which way pointed North then all the other directions.

The courtyard was one of our play activities this week and we enjoyed playing with the Early Years children.  The weather was lovely all week until Friday, but that didn’t stop us!

No morning walk this morning but instead we did some yoga in class.  Today we were Spidermen & Spiderwomen.

PRIMARY 1 LEARNING (B)LOG – WEEK 6

This week in Primary 1 we have learned about teddy bears.  Paddington Bear came all the way from Peru to Shetland and is going to stay with each of us for 2 nights and hopefully have lots of fun adventures.

We wrote about our favourite toy and carefully chose the right coloured paint to paint a picture of the toy.

Mr Rose was in class on Tuesday and made wind powered toys with us.

We have been thinking about  numbers to 20 and also using a number line for addition.

We got our first blended phonic ‘sh’ and have been thinking about things that have that sound in it and also practising writing it.

We have had a number of visitors this week.  Sami who is a French teacher came in to see us on Monday, Mr Lei was in on Wednesday telling us all about the Chinese New Year and told us a story about the animals in the Chinese zodiac.  Then finally, on Wednesday we were really lucky to meet Mrs Simpson who was the first female Guizer Jarl in Shetland and came in to show us her suit and show us lots of photos from her Up Helly Aa.  We all really enjoyed meeting her.

FIRST WEEK OF TERM 2 IN PRIMARY 1

We have started to learn about adding.  We know that you have 2 numbers and you put them together and see how many it makes.

We have enjoyed learning about all the astronauts that have been in space and on the moon, making little astronauts, the sand pit, junk models, maxi-fun and playing with the pipets.

We are learning about Space this term.  We are looking forward to learning about the planets and making our big space rocket.  We will also be learning about 2D and 3D shapes.

Primary 1 Learning (B)log – Week 7

This week we have  been finding jewels and gems in the sandpit.  We have learned the sounds m and d and Snappy Six.  We made line drawings of our houses with Mrs Johnston in Art.  We had a visit from Joan, Signe’s Gaggie, to tell us about what school was like when she was little  and also a visit from Yufeng Lei who is going to be coming to our school to help us learn Mandarin.  We have really enjoyed playing with the Lego and thinking about numbers at our challenge table.  We also got 3 new books from Miss Spall which we read in class then voted on which one was our favourite.

Next week we will be thinking about all the sounds that we have learned so far and we will be learning a new number.

Week 5 – Primary 1 – Learning (B)log

This week we have learned our new sounds – ‘e’, ‘c’ and ‘k.’  We learned about Feathery 4  and then we made some peacock fans.  We have thought about day and night and also looked at how children’s lives have changed from over 100 years ago.

We really enjoyed Roald Dahl day.  We had pink eggs for dinner, painted Roly-Poly Birds and had a fun time up in the library.  We liked playing in the sand tray and making lots of models.  We have enjoyed balancing on the wobble boards, dressing up in the Spanish dress using the castanets “ck, ck, ck” and we have loved sharing some of our favourite books from home with the class.

Next week we would like to make sticky pictures, play with the toy garage and cars, play with Lego and some jelly in the water tray.

A Visit to P1/2 by Nurse Lynn

We had a fantastic visit from Nurse Lynn today who told us all about the jobs that nurses have to do.  She brought in lots of equipment for us to look at and use.  We had a baby clinic, weight & height checks, things to check our lung and oxygen levels as well as bandages, syringes and other items a nurse would use.

“It was really good fun”

“It was interesting to learn what nurses do”

“It was fantastic!”
