RRSA – Assemblies

We have had many assemblies this year with UNCRC and RRSA as a focus.  This morning we did things a little differently and decided that instead of assembly we’d have an opportunity to talk about our knowledge, share some of the work we have completed and explore what we think about respecting the rights that people have.

The house captains led the activities and made sure that all the adults and children were involved.

We stepped inside and tried to empathise with people in situations with their rights not being respected.

We held a quiz, with real buzzers!

We wandered round the art gallery created by P5-7.  The gallery will be displayed in school for all visitors to see tomorrow at our Fisherton Festival.  We hope this will help raise awareness of some of the issues that refugees face.  We left feedback for the artists.

Super Duper

This week Cara, Elsi and Nikkita all received literacy certificates for the super job that they had done on creating Rights Respecting labels for our display boards.

Matthew received a maths award for hi enthusiasm in completing the Rigour Challenges and Christopher received a certificate in recognition of his honesty and responsibility concerning school matters.

Well done winners.

Nevermind Mastermind

Our P5-7 class were delighted with their end of term holistic assessment! The mastermind style quiz saw them answering questions on:

  • Children’s Rights
  • Life as a Refugee
  • Our Society
  • The World of Work

Outstanding results from our P5-7  Responsible Citizens!

We also had some fun with their specialist subjects!

A few of the subjects were:

  • Harry Potter

  • Pokémon

  • Horses

  • Monopoly

  • Starwars

The pupils said:

  • It was a good way to do a holistic assessment because it was fun at the same time.
  • I liked how it was like the TV show Mastermind.
  • When you were under the pressure of people looking at you it felt like everything went our your brain……I still did really well though!
  • I felt really nervous!
  • I liked getting to choose my own subject too.
  • I liked how everyone’s quiz was different and we needed to work out the percentages to see who got the highest score.

Reach for the Stars!

The Big Class have had great opportunities to excel over the past week.  Four of our P.7s survived survival camp at the weekend.  Five pupils attended the Ayrshire orienteering competition and none of them got lost!!!  Plus …. our debating won their debate at County Hall.  WOW!!!

Lucy got awarded her certificate for always adhering to our school values.  Great job Lucy.

STEM week 2018

Monday – Technology

We had a fantastic day with Mr Allen in the Design & Technologies department at Carrick Academy.  We couldn’t have been made feel more welcome and were assisted by 2 awesome seniors, who came in to help during their study leave.

After a tour of the department, the pupils got to see the 3D printer in action.  It printed us a 3D version of our school badge to take back to show the wee class.  They then followed a step by step lesson on CAD to design a keyring.  The design information was sent to the laser cutter and each pupil got to take home their personalised keyring.  The pupils were very impressed by the fact that Mr Allen could control their computer from his!  They heard how the A3 printer can make large print jobs and we got a fantastic banner to take back to school.  The final task was a Scalextrics tournament……Martha was the winner!

Throughout the day we linked design tasks to maths and gave a real context to measure, shape and scale.  We also made links between the skills that are developed in the department and the types of jobs that would use these skills.

P5-7 pupils really enjoyed this learning day; they looked mesmerised by all the equipment and machines. Carrick Academy and the teachers were no where near as scary as some of the pupils thought they might be! They can’t wait to get to go back one day.

Tuesday – Engineering

We had a competitive class today! We used newspaper and K’Nex to build the strongest bridge and the tallest tower.  Who do you think won??

We also made accounts on My World of Work and will use this over the coming years to help us plan our career paths.  One of the games told us what animal our personality was most like;  MP was delighted to find out she was a teddy bear! CG was very pleased with his falcon animal personality.

P7 Survival Camp 2018

What a fantastic weekend we had at the first EVER Dolphin House camp!

We…… pitched, sawed, sparked, cooked, ate, drank, gathered, walked, feared, chatted, slept, washed, canoed, escaped, shared and cleared…..ALL OUTDOORS!

Our experience was loads of fun but also had a serious side.  Throughout the event we reflected on the life of refugees in a different type of camp! We had 2 activities that were very refugee focused.  They were called FEAR and ESCAPE.  If you want to know more then please ask us!
