Barr Primary and Early Years Centre

School Houses

At Barr Primary and Early Years Centre we have 4 school houses.  These house teams represent areas of our community and environment.  Each pupil is assigned a house when they begin in our Early Years Centre and they stay part of this house throughout their time at the school.  Being part of a school house encourages us to work as a team, gives us a sense of belonging and offers us leadership responsibilities by becoming the captain and vice captain of the house when we are at a senior level.  We earn points for our house through showing good manners and displaying the school values, lining up well in the morning, at break and at lunchtimes and by taking part in inter-house competitions which includes Sports’ Day.  Our 4 house teams are: Stinchar, Rowantree, Changue and Albany.

Inter-house Challenges

Our first inter-house challenge of the year happened on a very wet October day.  As a school we had gone for a walk along Kirstie’s Trail to Kirstie’s Cairn, having a look at all the fairy houses we had made as we went.  Unfortunately it was a rather and we were soaked by the time we arrived.  Instead of having our inter-house competition there as planned we went back on ourselves to our favourite covered area near the bottom of the Fairy Knowe.  In our house we were tasks with using the natural materials around us to create a Halloween inspired image.  We had a lot of team discussion about what to create and what resources to use.  In the end we had 2 spiders and 2 pumpkins and the winning house by a narrow margin was Stinchar.  Then it was back to school for hot chocolate to warm up.

Our second inter-house event took part after Christmas.  Miss Seaton and Mrs McBirnie arranged for use to take part in an activity to try to make boats that float.  We used different materials to design and build our boats and then tested them out on the water.  Every team was fantastic at making their boats and therefore it ended in a draw.

The third inter-house event took place on World Book Day.  We used the event to host a World Book Day Quiz, asking questions about books and beyond.  This was a very hard fought contest with some very challenging questions but Albany took the crown with their excellent knowledge of Harry Potter!
