Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC) at Barr Primary School and Early Years Centre

At Barr Primary School and Early Years Centre, ‘Getting it Right for Every Child’ (GIRFEC) is at the heart of everything we do.

What is GIRFEC?

GIRFEC is the national approach in Scotland aimed at improving outcomes and supporting the wellbeing of all children and young people. It ensures that children receive the right help at the right time from the right people, supporting them and their parents to work in partnership with services that can help them. More information about GIRFEC can be found on the GIRFEC Ayrshire website.

The 8 Wellbeing Indicators (SHANARRI)

GIRFEC is underpinned by eight wellbeing indicators, known as SHANARRI. These are a legal entitlement, meaning that every child in Scotland has the right to be:

  • Safe
  • Healthy
  • Achieving
  • Nurtured
  • Active
  • Respected
  • Responsible
  • Included

These indicators form the foundation of our approach at Barr Primary School. We work to ensure that all pupils have the support they need to meet these wellbeing indicators. This sometimes involves working with other agencies, such as Speech and Language Therapists, Health Professionals, Educational Psychologists, and English as an Additional Language Specialists.

How GIRFEC is Integrated into Our School

GIRFEC is not an additional aspect of learning but is central to the ethos and values of our school. At Barr Primary and Early Years Centre, we extend the pupils’ understanding of GIRFEC and the eight wellbeing indicators through classroom activities, self-assessments, and assemblies.

To support this, every pupil completes the Glasgow Motivation and Wellbeing Profile at the beginning of the year. This tool helps them reflect on their wellbeing and motivation across different areas. The insights gained from these profiles guide us in providing the necessary support and inform our learning strategies. Pupils complete further assessments throughout the year to monitor their wellbeing and make adjustments as needed.
