Barr Primary and Early Years Centre

Our Learning

Our classroom is an engaging centre of learning where we study the eight curricular areas within a variety of contexts.

This session we have continued to enjoy our play based learning time.  We use it to help us develop our different skills of creativity, investigation, numeracy, literacy and co-operation. We are always looking at how we can use resources in different ways and we love to think outside the box in our play.  We are avid builders and use the blocks, magnetic shapes and Lego to build whatever our imagination encourages us to.  At the moment the we have been making intricate Domino runs and marble runs using some of our new resources kindly donated by Mrs McIlwraith and one of our parents.  We still love to build a den and at the moment we have turned it into an ice cream shop.  Small World has become very popular this session and we have really enjoyed having our Harry Potter world and decorating a dollhouse for our Barbies.  Our Barbie and Small World area have become much bigger this session and we love using the different materials to create our own worlds.  We have also borrowed the EY train set to add to our own and have been making huge train tracks in this area.  Every afternoon during our play we can choose to stay in our class or go to the EY to play.  We have so much fun!

Our topic this term has been on Climate Change.  We have been learning about what causes Climate Change, what the effects of it are and what we can do to try to stop it.  We have had lots of good discussions and we are now beginning to focus on how we can work in our community to help save our planet.

In Health and Wellbeing we are exploring Growth Mindset through the book ‘Beautiful Oops’ which talks about how mistakes are important and that we can make them into something beutiful.  This is an art based topic and each week we turn a different kind of oops into a beautiful piece of artwork.

Next we are going to explore our feelings and learn different strategies we can use to help control them when they get too much for us.  This topic will be based on the book by Poppy O’Neill.

Developing our activity levels is an important part of our school days. Every morning we take part in daily fitness routines to wake us up and make us ready to learn. We also participate 2 hours of quality PE each week. We love PE, it is definitely one of the best parts of our week.  The Early Years class also join us for PE and they are our favourite people to work with.
